I think their japanese title tracks are the style of song that you like. Gfriend always was known for having a kind of anime sound, and especially Umji is really popular in Japan and she made a cover of Lemon that have 5 million views. Their japanese fans says they have one of the best japanese between the kpop idols. Eunha also have a popular Japanese cover called Yoasobi. Im loving to see your Gfriend reactions, buddies (Gfriend fans) are known to even though not being the biggest fandom, they are really engaged and nice towards other fandoms and people new to Gfriend. Yuju have some Mariah Carey covers, her vocals are soo powerfull there. Yuju and Eunha also have a duo cover of Taylor Swift - I knew you were trouble and also of Meghan Trainor - Future Husband together. Umji have cover of Justin Bieber and of a lot of disney songs. Buddies are really supportivr and we still have hopes theyre going to be together again like they promised us. Sowon was really thr motherly figure of the group. And they make a joke that Sinb was the father. In time for the moonnight the fans had a theory that Eunha was dead in the mv and her friends just lost her thats why they was sad but they come to visit her at night or like in their dreams, like it says in the lyrics that theyre missing someone the whole time (and thats why was so emotional when they sand it in Queendom 2 and everybody cried). Yuju have a longer face than Yerin and she have the most powerful voice. They both have solo songs, maybe if you react to their songs you can see more the difference. Yerin is really popular about going to alot of tv shows, she even cried in one remembering of the girls of Gfriend, because she miss them alot. If you like summer songs you could check the cover of the girls of Viviz with Soyou from Sistar, singing Touch my body (theyre from the same company now). Gfriend was known to be really artistic and dont follow trends or try to have just mainstream songs. Thats why they didnt had the biggest fandom but their fans was really engaged because they was also really unique in their sound. You mixed Yerin with Yuju in Fever. Fever, Crossroads, Apple and Mago are their last korean title tracks and is when their company joined Hybe, so their sound changed a little.

You’re absolutely right- Gfriend had a very powerful and emotional orchestral sound. It was a vibe that was all their own, and it really hasn’t been replicated. In today’s musical environment, I don’t know if Gfriend’s sound could be successful.

Sunrise’s chorus closely resembles Time for the Moon Night and Crossroads’ as they’re kind of a “trio” the way Glass Bead, Me Gustas Tu, and Rough are.

Their live stage is a must and they sound even better live 😭at 28:05 you got yuju and yerin mixed up to help you yerin got kinda a baby face with a round face and cheeks

GFRIEND's concept was unique and unrivaled. also showed his best performance. And they were really pure and nice girls. I am moved by the sisterhood of the girls and believe they will reunite without fail.

Sinb really did said Sinb in the song, is because Sinb means misterious, and they translated it in the lyrics. In sunny summer they all say their names. Umji means thumb. Eunha means galaxy. Sowon means wish.

Yes you have a 50/50 shot of guessing Yuju vs Yerin but somehow got it wrong almost every time. Though to be fair, both of them had the long straight hair w/ straight bangs look throughout their entire Gfriend career. The one you keep getting drawn to by her acting is Yerin and the one whose voice keeps catching you off guard (the one with the belt-y diva voice) is Yuju. For Time for the Moonlight, that was kind of where the Gfriend lore really took off. It has a bit of an eerie and sad vibe but with like a hint of the usual Gfriend Nostalgia. You’ll notice throughout the MV there were moments where Eunha is alone or the rest of them look like they’re mourning, that’s because Eunha is gone, which is why she looked back at the end. Because she’s not actually there or something (I’m bad at explaining sorry). Anyways, I’d say this is the era where we start to see Gfriend move away from their “cute school girl” concept and in to something a bit older and more mature. Sunny Summer, the girls were saying their names throughout the song so you weren’t hearing wrong. Some names were translated because they actually mean something, like Umji is actually the work for Thumb and Sowon is Wish. Sunny Summer and Fever are like summer songs for Gfriend and I think they’re two of few MVs that aren’t really part of their storyline. Sunrise. I think this was around the time Yuju started to step back from being Gfriend’s vocal powerhouse and Eunha started to come in and do the highest notes in Gfriend title tracks. Up until this point in Gfriend’s career, Yuju carried the burden of handling the groups highest and hardest vocal lines/runs and I think that did a number to her voice. So we started to hear not only Eunha but the other girls too doing the higher vocals. As a Yuju bias, I was sad to see her not doing all the crazy mind blowing vocals but at the same time, I was happy that the other girls were able to show that THEY CAN SING SING too. Plus this was around the time Gfriend started to branch out outside of Korea and do tours/fan meetings so I think it was good that when they’re performing back to back title tracks at concerts, it helps lessen the burden on Yuju. Anyways, all of Gfriend can sing well. As for Fever, the first girl is Yerin. The part right after where you paused to talk about the lack of rap, is probably the closest we got to any Gfriend rap in a title track. The group doesn’t have an official “rapper” and obviously they’re not known for their rap. They have some rap in a few B-sides like “Love Bug” and “L.U.V” but definitely not the focal point of their music. I think they’re a good example of not needing rap in order to have good songs. Ok I think I got all my thoughts out. Sorry, this is one of my favorite groups of all time.

I love how well you interpret the videos and notice little details most reactors would miss. Your growing love for these girls is obvious and genuine and mirrors my own journey of discovery when every day I just fell deeper in love with them. You noticed Sowon being mom to her 5 little sisters in Time for the Moon Night which mirrors real life where she really does play that role. The members still adore her even now and VIVIZ still regard her as their leader even though she isn’t even in their group. They even rang her during Queendom 2 to ask her what song should they perform next week. She really is the best leader around and Buddies love her still even though she is no longer active.

I love everything you said while explaining how different their sound is because gfriend made this sound particular to themselves, they always did their own thing and a lot of people even if they werent fans would automatically know a song of gfriend because their brand is unique to themselves and im so proud that my girls were able to diferentiate themselves and be recognized as gfriend because of their particular sound, and im not saying its a bad thing to do more marketable songs, but i just love it when a group is able to do their own branding and everyone being able to say "yeah thats gfriend" when they hear a song with their branding

Buddy fandom is a special group that came together for Gfriend's music as well as the message the girls represent: talent, hard work, kindness, optimism, and above all, friendship. They found Gfriend and remain for the hopeful values they delivered through their songs, professional endeavors, and their daily life as individuals, beyond the momentary glory and the latest trend. If you ever get curious, you could check out the tribute projects Buddies produced on KZread on their own time. Yerin, whom you identified as Yuju in this video, may be the most sensitive member (most obvious during the early part of the Gfriend time), yet when the moment calls for it , she would be the first to step up to take on the new challenge head on. Given the way you spoke and reacted, perhaps there is a common thread that drew you to her first. Also Yerin likes bright and fun tunes as you do. You could see that when Gfriend put out their two-person unit songs in their "Walpurgis Night" album (with "Mago" as its title track). I also agree with you about your comments on preferences for 2nd and third gen music. Rather than just the sound, my view is that the older songs are far more lyrical and narrative in telling a story to a wiling audience through its music. The music nowadays, probably more pronounced so from the more popular groups, seems too ready to shock its audience into submission, with its effects, altitude and visual stunts. Kpop is a business after all and perhaps that is the new secret sauce for the current market. I also want to mention that it is impressive to see you uncover how "Sunny Summer" embedded member's name in its lyrics. I speculate it is not very intuitive for non-Korean speakers. Sunrise always gives me this intense amazing music, I also had goosebumps multiple times watching it (even now watching with you!). I love it! Sunny Summer indeed has their names on the lyrics. It's one of my fave summer song, too. ✨ Fever and TFTM are two my most fave GFriend songs! I love that you react to them (and some of them again) in this one video. ✨

I just got done with the last one on my workout and was fiending for more, great timing. Same on snsd, imo 3 of their best 5 albums are the japanese ones. Unfortunately Gfriend was never HUGE in Japan. Memoria and Flower did decently on the charts but never sold well, Fallin Light did not chart very well. I do think youre gonna love the Japanese stuff tho. And yes, Buddy for life. Always. Viviz even just say they don't have a leader, Sowon is their leader (they have directly said this, not just the fandom inferring it like kpop fans tend to do with shit). I think Gfriend were a bright spot in a lot of dark places for people. A lot of people accuse the Gfriend/Lovelyz/Apink/BerryGood concept of being childish with the whole innocence thing (and not entirely without basis an accusation of appealing to some nasty people's sensibilities). But for the normal people there's something inherently... hopeful(?) about Gfriend's music. Ive been in kpop since 2012 and Gfriend was the first group that broke me into enjoying the concept. I cried when CSR debuted because i missed this type of music so much and they were so open about how much they looked up to gfriend. I think most of us also hang on pretty hard because of the suddenness of the breakup. Long rant to say yeah, we in this Buddy shit for life. Thanks for doing a dive.

Also yes 엄지 (eomji) is literally thumb in Korean, and 신비 (sinbi) is mystery. You also didnt clock it but after the 엄엄엄엄지 part they say "은하수 건너서", or "lets go to the galaxy", since 은하(eunha) means "galaxy". And after "Yuju be my" they say "내 소원을 들어줄래" or "Will you make my wish come true?", which as a SONE you probably know Sowon means wish.

I also wanna say I was off and on crying during this because it always makes me so mad what we lost. Gfriend are special, for sure.

I love KPOP back then where dance moves was made for everyone, simplicity in MV, and song is 95% Korean so I can focus on the music and need to pay attention to the lyrics 😂

During the trainee days, Sowon was trained to rap and she was supposed to be the main rapper of the group. However, when gfriend debuted and was going on, it turned out that 95% of their songs didn't have rap in them. So yeah the rapper role is gone. But there's unofficial positions considered by many fans that Sowon is the main rapper while Umji's the lead rapper of the group.

You will have to watch videos about GFRIENDVERSE theories. Basically it's about magical girls and friendship. When one wished to have the power of the other, a death occurred. And Eunha keeps traveling between the timeline using the blue butterflies to repair this damage.

Fun fact. The lyrics in sunny summer contain their names. But if translated sinb=mysterious, umji=thumb, sowon=wish and eunha=galaxy if I’m not mistaken

About 'Time for the moonlight there is 2 theory story-wise, one is that Eunha died and the other girls grieved her and remember her and the other one is the opposite all the girls died except Eunha, also the one main point of both theories is that whoever died they can meet each other only during the Moonlight. Even if sometime the stories in the MV's can be sometime confusing, there are always so story lores points that connect everything like the girls sometime having special powers often connected to the glass beads, like that the blue butterfly have the power to connect them through time and space, see their main theme as friendship like friends being separated and trying to get together, friends that are always there for each other, the feeling of losing a friend and how friendship bond is stronger then anything. So keep all that in mind when watching a GFRIEND MV, you will see that GFRIEND stories are more symbolics in the MV then a down to earth grounded story.

Sunrise is my favorite song by them! Your reaction to it summed up how I felt when I heard it. I was never a GFriend fan back in the day, because their initial school girl/innocent theme felt really weird/off-putting to me, so I was a little quick to judge and not look into it. But I heard Sunrise and it just HIT all the musical buttons for me. Went back and listened to their other stuff because of it and loved their sound. Unfortunately that was right around when they disbanded :(

Honestly I agree with songs now being marketable, wayyy back in time. There's stories that'll keep you interested in them and lore (I know not everyone is into that but that's what they focus on back in the day) they focus on telling a story and represent something. They do it now but now songs are getting shorter , songs are getting repetitive (It can be catchy but you can't help but notice how many times certain words are being used over and over again) This for kpop in general. As for GFriend part, they don't have rappers but like based on traditional kpop positions Sowon (the pretty one that you kept pointing (I love her) is the main rapper and Umji (our sweet little maknae) is the lead rapper I believe based on traditional positions but GFriend is just one of those groups where they will prove to you that you don't need a rap in a song to make it nice (I do love raps and rappers respectfully) but GFriend leans more into more musical and instrumental sounds. They do have songs include raps , is there a lot of them? No , you can literally count how many songs of theirs includes rapping with your fingers lol 😂

Sowon is Gfriends Main Rapper (I’m pretty sure cause she mentioned it before) I’m pretty sure but she never rapped much in their title tracks.

For stages, you have to check out the Me Gustas Tu SBS stage where they had to battle pouring rain and giant moths. It is quite legendary and really fed their popularity

Love your journey with Gfriend, it makes me so nostalgic. The two girls that are left for you to recognize are Yerin and Yuju. Yerin is the one that kind of attracted your attention more and Yuju is our golden and main vocalist and the one whose voice you keep pointing out. In Sunny Summer they all say their names, it's just that SinB, Umji, Eunha and Sowon mean "mysterious", "thumb", "galaxy" and "wish" so the subs don't straight up mention the names. And I totally understand what you say about the latest groups being more marketable. Some groups might not have a defined style or like they don't sound personal, and the artistry is just not the same (which is not especially a bad thing, just different, and I miss some of this old stuff too). Gfriend have a signature sound, especially with all the orchestral pop sound and the instruments that are played in many many of their songs. They tend to have very melodic songs, kind of orchestral and upbeat as well, their vocals shine too and they have suitable choreos and very good transitions as well. It's like they are telling a story with the music, lyrics, vocals and dance. Fever is not like that, and it's not bad, but it's my least fav title track. I feel like you will love their three japanese releases, especially Memoria and Fallin' Light (the other is Flower). The bsides are also great (especially La Pam Pam, in case you wanna listen to it). Sunrise is a masterpiece and Time For The Moon Night usually grows on you later on. Both have very orchestral pop sound, and Crossroads too. Will be waiting for your next reaction!

24:57 symphonic concept would still be popular today. it hasn't been that long since groups like gfriend, lovelyz, oh my girl established themselves and their agencies with this concept. these are some of the most popular and beloved non-big 3 girl groups from 3rd gen. the reason why these groups were popular was also because the big 3 doesn't do symphonic concept, so you're not in direct competition with them. the biggest mistake of 4th gen is that agencies started following the trends set by the big 4, and it hasn't really paid off for them. so many groups from smaller agencies disbanded or derailed their momentum by following the trend. symphonic concept is the most untapped market in 4th gen. there's a group called CSR that's doing a similar concept, and their first album sold out within months and has not been restocked in a year, and they became the fastest group from a small agency to win a music show (they won Music Bank in just 4 months). and they did all this with a far limited budget than a group like gfriend. they're underpromoted and can't even afford subtitles on their channel. sadly, CSR's company is limited by budget and resources, but their achievements in spite of that goes to show you there is a demand for this concept. it's just lacking investment

Fun fact Gfriend and Twice debuted the same year and the members are all really close you should check out their moments together. You should also check out Gfriends funny moments these girls are super funny. Yuju is my favorite she is so funny.

I miss them so much...If you want to see more of their interactions with other groups, they did a couple of crossover shows with Mamamoo, I think Showtime and Battle Trip, that were super fun. Mamamoo adores Umji.

Eunha is the only one who survived out of all the members after they all fought each other when they awaken their some sort of ability in the small lake in love whisper mv. And so Eunha keep on time travelling to bring them back together (crossroads mv). Actually Hybe released a story lore about gfriend's journey and even included it as a merch in their album ❤❤❤ I can't wait to watch you listen to their album. It's more amazing! They were rookies here and they always cry watching this because according to them they can see how young and full of hope they were on this performance. Since you watched Queendom 2, you probably think Sunrise is familiar because it's very similar sounding to Red Sun! on Queendom by VIVIZ. At least that's what I think why you recognize it.

I think the girl you like is Yerin who you mix up with Yuju. If you watch a guide such as a Guide to GFriend 2020 it will help a lot to let you differentiate between them. I got those two mixed up as well when I was trying to learn the members. Loving your reactions to GFriend and I can really empathise with how you are starting to feel something special about GFriend. They have a charm and charisma that sets them apart from every other Kpop group and is why my love for them will never wane.
