You asked about why Marika and Godfrey’s children were omens, and if that meant Marika was hiding something. Actually, it’s Godfrey who likely contributed to that, considering the Crucible Knights were his personal elite soldiers. It’s not confirmed, but Godfrey’s connection to the Crucible is stronger than Marika’s, and is likely the cause for Morgott and Mohg to be omens

  • @leehollings79

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking too. Hoarah Loux was a great and powerful warlord, with a lust for battle and an animalistic rage. More beast than man in combat. It would be fitting then that some of his children would be blessed by the power of the Crucible, which seems to be a font of LIFE in its most primal and viscious. Omens have great strength and horns literally bursting from every part of their body, you could say that they're chock full of "life energy."

@@592Johno It’s explained in Melania’s remembrance. Miquella and Malenia are afflicted because they are the children of a single god; Marika and Radagon. It’s the strongest piece of evidence that Marika and Radagon were always the same being since their children were afflicted like that by their almost incestuous union. Screwed them up pretty badly

@@592Johno I mean, in that situation you can take a look at Marika and say "C'mon, two different husbands, but the kids are always...exceptional in some way" and think that there is something that Marika is hiding with her roots and origin. That's a fine point, however, if you know the spoiler about Marika and Radagon's "union", I'd say their children are marked from birth due to the truth about Marika and Radagon specifically. It's not a "Marika thing" in this situation, but a "Marika AND SPECIFICALLY Radagon thing." Also, we have the Eternal Queen Marika and her Elden Lord Radagon and both of their kids are Empyreans? The Outer Gods would be quite foolish to disregard such an opportunity ;)

The graveyard of swords is a direct reference to the Japanese Manga, Berserk, specifically the Band of the Hawk's "Hill of Swords". Most of Miyazaki's games (actually all) has heavy references to Berserk. Ranni is similar to a character Schierke and Blaidd is an obvious Guts analogue with that armour. Even in Blaidd's armour description they describe him as a struggler against fate-- which is what the main character of Berserk is condemned to. Good point you make about the gods around @31:00. That's why Ranni's ending is so unique-- she seeks a place where people can be completely free from the machinations of the outer gods, for them to have their own fate and agency. The outer gods as we know in this game just seem to be fucking around with people for no clear purpose so its hard to understand them. I suppose you could argue that their purpose is to confuse "lesser beings" so that they're always out of reach and solidified above mortals. Also @1:04:00 he's talking about fundamentalists assholes such as D. That guy fucking sucks

The Japanese dialogue for it is a little more clear: "… Even if life and souls are one with the order, it (the order) could be kept far away. There are a lot of indicators that Melina is the Gloam-Eyed Queen. Maliketh (Beast Clergyman) gives you the eye that trembles when close to deathroot. Possibly the eye he removed from the queen upon her defeat. Melina’s missing eye. If Melina does not burn herself (Frenzied Flame ending), she has her eye back- which looks identical to the beast eye- and is again at her full power (after defeating Maliketh and restoring death to the lands) when she hunts you to deliver to you what is yours… “Destined Death”. Furthermore, there is an idea that Melina returned when Ranni sacrificed her body and Godwyn’s soul, which is why Melina has burns all over her. They also both disappear the same way in the blueish particles. Very interesting parallels. All of the current empyreans are direct offspring of Marika. The Gloam-Eyed Queen was an empyrean. And Melina states her “purpose was given to her long ago by her mother in the Erdtree”. I really think Melina and Miquella are two of the most interesting and least understood characters in the game. Great videos! Looking forward to more!

I personally feel like Melina is actually a Ranni or maybe just a part of Ranni. If you notice they’re both missing opposing eyes. Also both Melina and Ranni give you a spirit to help you on your journey. It could be a ploy of Ranni’s that would lead you to help her on her path. Afterall she has no other way to continue her existence besides the help of a tarnished. We can also see how deep her plots go since she is willing to kill Godwyn to escape her destiny. She is an Aizen level threat and we must never forget that even though we do simp for her

Since it wasn't addressed directly in this video (and I don't think Vaati has covered it in depth yet): Placidusax is implied to have been the Elden Lord before the Elden Beast and the Erdtree arrived, serving a different Outer God than the Greater Will and essentially being the dragons' version of Marika. Note that his pose when you first encounter him is a deliberate mirror of the Two Fingers, indicating that he is still desperately trying to communicate with a god who has now gone silent, replaced by the power of the Greater Will.

  • @wowitsfrostygames155

    @wowitsfrostygames155

    Жыл бұрын

The greater will didn’t “replace” the god. The greater will is always the first and foremost god of the lane. The outer gods are lesser gods, and this god that went silent could mean 1 of 2 things. either that the greater will abandoned the dragons, just as it has abandoned the demi gods in favor of the tarnished, or that the outer god of the dragons has abandoned them. This might be the biggest misunderstanding in the lore, and as an English audience it’s an easy misunderstanding to make, but clearing up this misunderstanding helps a lot with things not quite falling neatly into place. After all of the greater will is just another outer god, why would it willingly help us set up a completely different order instead of to repair its own?

A theory as to why Morgott and Mohg were born omen: they were potentially born before Godwyn and conceived by the Hoarah Loux persona (who was generally a lot closer to the crucible, commanding the crucible knights and generally being more animalistic) and Marika, and then after Hoarah Loux takes on Serosh and becomes Godfrey, so Godfrey and Marika then give birth to Godwyn, who comes out “normal”

Everything about her is the incarnation of the moon: First the cycle of mother and daughter, birth and dead, just like the neverending cycle of the moon. Second her little apprentices that surround her like the stars surround the moon. This motive of constant rebirth is exactly what the meaning of the moon lools like. The search of perfection that can be found in the fullmoon, but also in its opposit: the dark and brightless newmoon. A game between light and shadow, hope and agony. Its beautiful!

The black tree mentioned in the Helphens Steeple description has gotta be the “Shadow of the Erdtree” right? Vaati even described it as a dark mirror of the Erdtree, and the whole vibe of the announcement pic reminded me of the Greek field of asphodel or the Egyptian field of reeds, both representations of an afterlife or spirit realm. Maybe Miquella is lost in the spirit world because he didn’t die a glorious death - he’s just sleeping in his coccoon

From my understanding, the reason why Malenia and Miquella are afflicted is because they were children of Radagon and Marika who are the same person. So it's almost a incestuous curse, and the omen twins Mohg and Morgott were afflicted because the golden order(Marika) and (old tree order) Godfrey were joined gaining dominant attributes from the old order, and the reason Godwyn was chosen to be killed was because he represented "the perfect golden order offspring" so his death was a direct jab at the order he represented.

Elden ring is such a meticulously crafted game that to figure out its story, looking at it like a historian works to gain insight into the worlds story. The haligtree is the best example of this as it seems to have a detailed and rich story but there is very little written or spoken about it. Thus we look to its design, architecture and inhabitants for information, statues and engravings give glimpses into the purposes of certain rooms and tell the story of Miquella and his aspirations and the factions and races inhabiting it tell us of Miquellas allegiances (everyone who needs a friend apparently). Quelaag covers this alot and especially looks into parallels in real anglo saxon, celtic and alchemical folklore/beliefs. Some community members even going as far as to accidentally predict the appearance of certain celtic iconography as the icon in question seemed to fit perfectly into existing theories and was then later found in engravings in-game. Elden ring is likely the most rich work of fiction to date and most certainly my favourite fictional world ever.

In regard to why the M&M twins were afflicted from birth, I've always assumed it was like this: With incest there is a chance of an abnormal birth, with their parents being the actual same person it was like incest x10 along with a bit of the greater will saying "Bruh, that's fucked up" and thus their afflictions appeared.

The way you appreciated how we don't know what things are, referencing the fact that that's how it would be if we were actually going through this ourselves was a really good point. The game kinda gives you the choice of how much back story you want to explore or to not do that at all. It's not only the best combat in any souls game ever, with very little distractions from gameplay if you want it that way, but it's also game of thrones level story telling, if not better because we have amazing animation.

There's a video out there by Ziostorm that covers the mistranslated English version of her storyline, and the Japanese version by comparison makes her look like the absolute martyr-savior of The Lands Between. I mean- there's no spell to break the boss arena in half, but his moves in the first phase still have that pale orange-gold glow that the Crucible incantations do. Maybe the children Godfrey had with Queen Marika were Omen because of his connection to the Crucible. I think the reason why miquella and malenia were born affected is due to the theory the Merica and radagon are the same being, and being born from one single entity split in to 2 and then having kids, well that is just asking for trouble

Fun fact: it is a widely accepted theory that Melina is actually the gloam-eyed queen. Or rather - a reborn version of her. We know that Marika had the Gloam-eyed queen burned alive with the very black flame that she commanded. In the same way - Melina is said to be "burned and bodiless" nothing more than a spirit, an apparition. There is also a lot of other evidenceand subtle hints like for example Melina having the same exact moveset in combat like the Black Knife Assassins, etc etc... My working theory is that while Marika was imprisoned inside the Erdtree she used a fragment of the Gloam-eyed queen's spirit to create and "give birth" to Melina - the burned and bodiless. With the purpose of her acting as a kindling maiden to a chosen tarnished - which, in the end she did.

I do believe that the Omen twins were like that due to Godfrey being very much of this world. If memory serves, it is heavily suggested that he was about and around way before Marika's ascension, meaning he was of the Crucible. After all he was the commander of the Crucible Knights. Reason why Miquela and Malenia were afflicted is probably down to it being that their parent's were, as is heavily speculated, one and the same being, which is a whole new level of incest. That, typically produces genetic defects, so this is probably why.

Considering “horn” is one of the Aspects of the Crucible and Godfrey is a character with deep connection to the crucible, I’d argue it’s more likely that the Omen Horns came from his lineage. Goldwyn embodying Marika’s visage and Godfrey’s strength, with Mohg and Morgott embodying the primeval aspects of the crucible inherent to Godfrey and his crucible knights.

I have a minor in religious studies lol and how I interpret godhood for this game is that almost anything can be a god if the people believe that it is a god. It just so happens that what the people and creatures of Elden Ring believe to be a god have actual, real, and physical power in their world which probably makes them believe in it even more! Hopefully that makes sense 😅

The haligtree was a place of sanctuary and safety for those who were shunned by the rest of the world. The entire area is optional, as such the player has to actively choose to go there, invade the sanctuary, and slaughter those who reside peacefully within. Something to think about in your next play through...

I believe the twins were born afflicted because by this time, even before the Shattering, Marika had already sealed Destined Death, which was an act against the Greater Will. The Greater Will, in retaliation, could have corrupted her children. That would also explain Morgott and Mogh being born as omens, not under the Greater Will's grace. So Godwin would have been the only pure offspring of Marika.. If you think about it, she might have sealed Destined Death to keep Godwin alive forever, causing all her children after that to be cursed and afflicted. Like Freya and her son who she cursed with eternal life without any feeling, Marika's love and need to keep her firstborn child alive cursed the rest after him.

In regard to your ponderings ~@27:40, I would highly suggest watching the Quelaag video about metals/magnetism. To me it was extremely insightful about the inner-/inter-workings of outer gods and how the different characters relate to them. About the @31:00 musing: The gods in ER seem to sort of embody one principle, or overarching aspect (i.e., rot or order) which sort of dictates how the world operates as a whole. If that makes sense?

This video made me soften towards Fia…a bit, maybe and perhaps the events in her quest line didn’t merit the punishment I meted out :) Vaati, always making me rethink everything XD Also, does it matter if your mythology knowledge is secondhand? It was probably well-researched by the developers and it would take too long to learn otherwise ^_^

I like you're view of the sympathetic villain. The anti-villain to accompany the established anti-hero. I would point you to perhaps the most iconic anti-villain in all of fantasy literature - Gollum from the Tolkien legendarium. An ultimately sympathetic character but also a murderer, thief and betrayer. GRRM uses both the anti-hero and the anti-villain extensively and it's no surprise that this is seen throughout Elden Ring.

It's just my theory of the possible reasons why Radahn held back the stars, was because I think the Elden Beast was a star that came to the Land Between. And if the stars can bring in beasts like Astel, who can be persume to have been sent by outer gods to conqueror the lands between, as did the greater will and the elden beast vs the dragon god placidusax and his outer god. Then Radahn would held back the stars, to keep competition from the Elden Beast thus upholding the Golden Order.

Btw, Hyetta (the eye eating girl's) quest leads to the "Lord of frenzied flame" ending, which is one of the 6 endings of the game. That ending even has a small added scene with Melina, if Melina didn't die by burning herself for you to enter the erdtree at this point in time (37:33). Because of Melina not supporting you becoming the lord of frenzied flame, she leaves your side and doesn't burn the erdtree for you when you completed Hyetta's quest before Melina has a chance to burn herself for you near the end of the game. Maybe you could react to all of the 6 game endings as well.

8:56 This explains me as a gamer in RPG's that provide free choice. I have a conscience in regard to NPC's of all things and it's why in Elden Ring, after I watched all of Vaati's lore explanations, I avoided combat with the omen in the sewers JUST for the fact I felt sympathy towards them. From the simple perspective of playing a video game, it's a ridiculous notion- and yet it there it is, reminding me I'm human.

I personally think that the Outer Gods are sentient embodiments of concepts. They don't necessarily have a physical form, which is why they need agents to interact with the world, but they are still immensely powerful beings. The Greater Will represents Order. The Frenzied Flame represents Chaos. The Formless Mother represents Bloodlust. The Scarlet Rot represents Decay. The Dark Moon represents Wisdom. Death represents itself. And The Fell God represents Sacrifice.

To go with the twin thing, if you look close, almost every major faction has a weapon, spell, or crest or something with a double helix pattern on it. Pretty cool stuff Still really digging these videos btw! Keep 'em coming lol (Also I won't go into detail or anything, but my personal interpretation of Marika and the Golden Order is that in a similar fashion to how the multiple endings let us choose what sort of age we will be lord over? The previous Elden Lords also had a lot of say in what kind of era they would rule over. Godfrey is a mighty warrior who loves battle, so the early age of the Erdtree/Crucible was one of conquest and war and growth, and then Radagon was a man of reason and rules and maintaining order, so he created the Golden Order as we think of it with all its categories and prejudices and whatnot Marika, in my opinion, is more of a neutral figure whose purpose is to make that lord's desire a reality... And then when that lord's time has passed, to remove them and find a new Elden Lord. The current situation we're in is because Radagon refuses to let her end his age and replace him, and her shattering the Elden Ring and calling back the Tarnished and all that is part of a long plan to outsmart him and finally remove him as lord)

45:11 what I assume you're trying to say is that there is a motif of 2s in this game; Godskin duo boss, Mogh and morgott, Marika and radagon, Miquella and malenia, This world has 2 moons, 2 different elden lords, 2 sets of demigod twins, I could go Abit further but you get the point

I find Bloodborne really useful for thinking about the outer gods. Think about how Formless Oedon sired Mergo and influenced the world of BB, or how the moon turns out to be the Moon Presence, which has done a deal with/bewitched Gehrman, so is influencing the hunters dream/the hunters/etc. Elden Ring feels like it takes this kinda concept in a bunch of different ways, with all sorts of 'external forces' trying to enact their will upon the lands between, whether it is Ranni meeting the dark moon, Renala meeting her full moon, the outer god of Rot influencing Malenia, Mohg interacting with the Formless Mother to use his cursed blood as a boon, the flame of frenzy with its own set of fingers, even the Golden Order - the most influential of them all, and the one we probably experience the most of, through its effects - from bestowing power to Marika, sending a big-ass golden space beast to the world, influencing the society of the Lands Between to change their customs and switch to worshipping gold/golden order/Greater Will. It's just mad how deep From games are, in such an expertly crafted kind of way, rather than a more traditional way of conveying story and lore. Love 'em!

Funnily enough, the rot god specifically apparently has a physical form. There's a weapon in-game called the Scorpion's Stinger that is said to be "crafted from the relic of a sealed outer god". Relics IRL are pieces of the corpses of dead saints, so that weapon is literally made from a part of that outer god.

Elden Ring seems to rest on the idea Death is of a dual principal: something to be feared and admired at the same time, and what can happen if the balance of that duality has been upset. A prime example is Miquella & Malenia. Life and Death given physical representations. Naturally, you would believe these two, despite being twins, would either despise or at least hold some form of contempt for each other, but they don't. In fact, the two share a deep love and admiration for one another; both going to great lengths to ensure the other's happiness. I hope the DLC expands more on their story, and the story of the Death birds/ Twin bird as well.
