Just before this album Pink Floyd found their sound with the track Echoes. But I would highly recommend Echoes live at Pompeii where the guys play in an empty ancient Roman Amphitheatre with no audience! It will blow your socks off!

I second this (technically I tenth this judging from the likes). Those are the 'essential' Pink Floyd albums. I hope you react to them the same way as you have reacted to this one (from the beginning to the end). Wish You Were Here and Animals have only 5 songs on the album (some are long though), 'The Wall' is a very long album full of interludes and it's really the essential 'concept' rock album (look up what that is if you don't know what I'm talking about). It does however, require you to do longer listening sessions probably, else 'the concept' probably won't make a lot of sense. Then again, most PF albums will grow on you over time, the ambiguity of their music makes it so you can re-appreciate the songs as you get older. Following you on this DSotM listening session was fun. It's still kind of weird that I look up videos of other people listening to Pink Floyd for the first time (it's not something I tell at my zoom meetings) but I guess it's mostly to hear a lot of Pink Floyd, but having someone enjoy the album for the first time always kinda brings me back to when I first discovered these masterpieces, so it adds to the enjoyment. The disadvantage is that I'll have to deal with KZread's bitrate... but eh, I'll just have to wash that away with my elitist lossless album rips ;).

Ive listened to this record since the 70s and got to hear the entire thing again with. Someone that is discovering it for the first time, That's a gift for me. Also remember all those synth sound had to be created every time they were turned on. There was no such thing as a bank of preset sounds.. I love DSOTM Wish you were here is just as good. If not better. Animals is great as well. The Wall in my opinion was their pinnacle. It is darker but absolutely brilliant. BTW they play this entire record front to back without any breaks, note for note on the Pulse tour.

"Meaning" is the word when it comes to Pink Floyd. Whatever else is said about them their music is not without meaning and relevancy. An atmospheric poetic and relevant view of life and humanity that has withstood the test of time. The meaning of this album and its songs will evolve and grow with you as you get older... only causing you to only appreciate it that much more. Take it from an old man. You might want to check out "Wish You Were Here" album next, or perhaps just the title track "Wish You Were Here'" as a teaser. Also, they do a pretty good live rendition of "Money" from this album on the Pulse concert. ✌️

Watched a lot of reactors over the last 2 years, including those doing Pink Floyd. Yours was superb. You "Time-d" 😁 your brief good comments during instrumental portions to avoid stepping on the lyrics, and you played and followed the lyrics too. I also noticed you did the studio version of Comfortably Numb before the awesome Pulse concert version. Impressive! Always do the studio versions released the public back in the day first, as that's the most commonly known versions of great music or movies. Then do new versions later to compare, as we did over the years. At the "Time" gap I found and watched your reaction there and came back to where you left off. Don't let others rag you for skipping "Time" because a lot of us have heard or seen all this stuff dozens if not hundreds of time. We're here to watch you younger folks react, not listen to the whole thing uninterrupted. I was 18 when Dark Side Of The Moon was released and your reactions reminded me of ours back then. Dark Side was THE most significant album for PF. Was a fan way before Dark Side, as PF was already a very popular acid/psychedelic rock band that even did a few movie music scores too. We felt that PF would keep getting better so Dark Side was not that unexpected really. At least to us diehard fans. But it was still AWESOME as can be, and we couldn't stop playing it over and over! No doubt you'll venture into their excellent post-Dark Side albums, and there's a lot to explore, but sometime later go back to their very interesting beginnings with its founder Syd Barrett and his The Piper At The Gates of Dawn album, then their Barrett-Gilmore transitional album Saucer Full of Secrets, and take off from there. I think you'll like their early stuff, but it is quite different than Dark Side and beyond. You'd just have to have grown up in the 60s and early 70s to really understand! LOL! I'll hit subscribe. Regards.

The detached description of a lobotomy is demonstrated in the lines "You raise the blade, you make the change. You re-arrange me 'till I'm sane". The line "I'll see you on the dark side of the moon", which became a famous metaphor of human irrationality, expresses that madness that is always present but invisible, waiting to be exposed. In Sigmund Freud's terms it would be the unconscious.[4]

By themselves they're life changing, in sequence it's collectively soul changing. After those albums, double back to Meddle and Obscured By Clouds, then the later stuff A Momentary Lapse Of Reason, then Division Bell, go back to the beginning with Piper At the Gates of Dawn for their start, A Saucerful Of Secrets, More, Ummagumma, Atom Heart Mother, then end with the final album Endless River. Good luck finding anything this epic today! I kind of doubt it. I really believe these guys are the Mozart/Beethoven of our time because this album alone still sells 10,000 copies a week and it's almost 50 years old. 200 years from now they'll probably only be listening to Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, the Beatles and maybe two or three other groups from nowadays. But I guarantee you one thing....Pink Floyd will still be on somebody's playlist, turntable or whatever it's called 500 years from now! Enjoy Echoes from "Meddle" the albums "Wish you were Here", "Animals" or "The Wall" even a group of songs off of the "Division Bell" album! Pink Floyd's nearly a bottomless rabbit hole so enjoy!!

The prism album design was 'lifted' from a school physics textbook & embellished. The story goes that the artist had several designs ready in a room when the band came in. They quickly scanned the designs but all pointed to the rainbow & said 'that one'. It's now so famous, they don't need their name on it, everyone knows its them. 'That's so retro'...LOL!...it was new back then !. In Brian Damage, its got references to Syd Barrett with lines like 'If the band you're in start playing different tunes, I'll see you on the dark side of the moon'.

idk if anyone mentioned this but Roger Waters sat down with many staff members and asked them a series of questions like, “have you ever felt like you were going mad?” and “have you ever felt a sudden urge to be violent?” among other questions. The voices you hear in the background of the songs (such as the laughing and the old man talking) are those exact people Waters interviewed and used the sound bites in their songs.

Nowadays, they're "old", haven't toured in a lonnnng time (and RIchard Wright passed many years ago), but if you love Floyd music, I urge everyone to check out concerts this year for tribute band Brit Floyd - I've seen them 3 times, and will be the 4th in August, they painstakingly recreate every sound and nuance, plus the light show and graphics are phenomenal, it's the next best thing to seeing PF.

Work out how many years that is.... If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times...when you world turns to shit and you've had a crappy day, you come home, pour a scotch (or similar), or glass of red, drink that offing it down. Then, pour another, woof that down too, then pour a third one and go turn off all the lights. Put this, or ANY Pink Floyd record on. Go find a bean bag or deep leather couch, put your headphones on and sink down into your chair, close your eyes, sip away the final drink, and let the music sooth your soul !!!

It was VERY revolutionary when it came out in March 1973. Everyone that heard it was blown away and pretty much everyone since. I was 10 and my older brother bought it home from college for Spring Break and Holy Cow - we loved it and just couldn’t believe what we were hearing. It was the standard for recordings for a decade or more. The quadraphonic recording was new was perfectly timed to the maturation of Gilmour, Waters, Wright and Mason’s musical visions. Coupled with former Beatles engineering assistant, Alan Parsons, who went on to a good career with his The Alan Parson Project - you should check him out too, looking for the freedom to experiment and make a name for himself, and the remarkable lyrics of 29-year old Waters who realized his life was NOW - he was mortal and afraid of an early death (his father died in WW2 when Waters was a baby) - (see The Wall 😂); they created an enduring masterpiece for the ages. The only thing wrong with DSOTM is it’s too short!!! It’s the longest charting album in the Billboard Top 200 albums- over 950 weeks total - it charted for ~740 consecutive from its release ~ 14 years straight. 👍🏻😎🏆

That very last line that you quoted was actually removed from the album, apparently Waters thought it was too optimistic for such a "dark" album.

If and when you react to echoes, I would do the album first. The 72 live version is broken into two parts and most reactors never react to the second part of the song/video.

Totally agree.. do the album studio version of Echoes first. Warning, it's 23 minutes and change, but trust me, you'll hardly notice it.

Do live version of echoes before the album version. The album version is the entire side 2 of the album Meddle with an extended sound effects section in the middle. Live at Pompeii cuts it in two and reduces the sound effects part making it better as a reaction piece😉

Greatest album ever made. The only ones that might match it are the other Pink Floyd albums. I want this album played at my funeral. To remember my life from beginning to end. Welcome to the Pink Floyd machine.

@@tenacioushart2084 check out Roger waters Us and Them concert film. You can rent or buy it on youtube. He performs the songs he wrote from Darkside of the moon, Wish you were here, Animals, and the Wall. At 76 years old he still has it and put on the best show I’ve ever seen by far. He put out some of the individual songs on his KZread channel but the entire concert is a must see. kzread.info/dash/bejne/pJmExsWdfLTFnc4.html

Imo, this is the only Pink Floyd album where every member of the band was crucial to the way the album came out. It could not have been done without Nick Mason's impeccable precision drumming nor without Richard Wrights dreamy synth and keyboards nor without Dave Gilmours incredibly expressive guitar work and not without Roger Waters beautiful lyrics and input into the song writing. All their other albums did not have the same equally creative input by each member.

You are kinda supposed to be sad...but also uplifted. The movements of the sun and the moon, and the eclipses in between are just phases...as it fades out, if you put it on again right away...it fades IN again. I love LOTS of different kinds of music, but Floyd is my shit.
