How bout me loving this so much im about to burst..... I love Alanis. Haven't listened to her for ages. What a treat to get the opportunity to love this song all over again. It is 1000% surething that she kept it to the original. Im sure it her way of showing the elusive kudos to Alanis.

When this song first came across a Spotify Playlist, I didn't realise that it was Aurora. It wasn't until a very distinctive note/tone she hits that I came to my senses. This woman is a chameleon, but very unique at the same time.

Love this song by Alanis! Alanis's "shouting" vocalizations really suit Aurora's voice. Thank you for explaining those "dangling carrots". I had no idea what they meant, and that they're also a part of an idiom.

Absolutely fantastic cover. You’ve done full Aurora concerts in the past and I was hoping you could react to her full concert she did this year in Bergen. She has an orchestra behind her and her vocals are flawless. She does her old songs but with a slight twist. I know you’d really enjoy it.

I admit I've never really considered myself an Alanis Morissette fan, but my sister had this album back in the day and she did undeniably release some pretty great tunes. Hearing Aurora covering this song made it seem almost like it was written with her in mind, even though she must've been like two years old when it was released. Alanis + Aurora = Perfect match! Makes me curious to find out what else will be on this album...

I'm a huge huge Aurora fan.....as well as a massive Alanis fan. Alanis' first two albums are undeniable. And Thank U is probably my favorite song she ever made...indeed, one of my favorite songs of all time. It's SO simple...just the 1, 4, and 5 chord...over and over. But the emotions and vibe is immaculate. And I totally agree that it almost feels like this _could have_ been written by Aurora herself. Lyric-wise it's totally in her wheelhouse in terms of themes and imagery. I could see Aurora writing that "transparent dangling carrots" line....as well as the entire notion of being grateful for things like emotional catharsis, existential angst, the profundity of silence, etc. I still love the original the most....only because it's a perfect 10/10 song...and I adore the chanting vocalizations Alanis does in the outro...that Aurora only hints at a bit in her version. Also, Aurora stayed pretty darn true to the original in terms of instrumentation/arrangement...and I feel like her best covers push things in new directions more. But....I still absolutely love her version too. I mean, it's a perfect song....kinda hard to mess up!

I totally see why Aurora chose this song. Magnificent! And I was struck by the realization that Aurora has written an entire song about almost every line of this song. Perfect on all counts. :)

  • @avedic

ikr? It's a song that literally has the lyric "thank you...thank you silence..." That's such a quintessential Aurora lyric lol. Altho I think both Aurora and Alanis are similar in many ways. Both are VERY good at writing super catchy hook laden pop music....AND both of them have a very deep emotional core and are 100% devoted to the art and soul of music, with the commercial aspect simply not being the point. They both have tons of talent and integrity basically.

I discovered aurora thru her other covers, namely her Massive Attack cover as I’m a massive MA fan. I totally agree with you - she has a style she puts into most of her covers and what I love about this one specifically is she really kept the integrity of the original. You can hear the respect she has for Alanis when she sings this. She could have gone way more into her “ethereal” vibe vocally and musically, but I’m glad she didn’t and instead preserved the pace and the melody of the original; it really gave me the impression that this song in particular is somehow special to her. Gorgeous cover of a now-classic. So glad to see others have taken notice.

Another great cover by Aurora! She can do no wrong🙂 Really love how she uses her fantastic voice in this true-to-the-original version. But I wonder why she made that slight change to the lyric in the very first line...? English isn’t my first language, so I don’t know if «off of» means the same as just «off»? Did Aurora leave out the «of» to give the lyrics a slightly different meaning, if so I don’t get it...😊

This is Alanis's Song in my books, always will be, she WROTE it after all. However, Aurora is the only singer I'm happy to hear cover it. I too am surprised how close she keep it to the Original though. "dangling carrots"= * a method of tempting a Donkey to move forward by Dangling a Carrot before it, and beating it with a stick if it refuses. * The phrase Carrot and stick denotes a promised reward coupled with a threatened punishment as a method of persuasion or coercion.

AURORA's version of "The Partisan" brought me to tears. I looked up the history of the song -- Here's the short version: it was written by the leader of the French Resistance during WW II, and performed in cabarets by his girlfriend and fellow resistance member. Years later Leonard Cohen recorded a version in English (which included a female chorus singing one section in French). AURORA sang both the English and French lyrics during a tribute to Cohen after he died. It's well worth reacting to!

Your reaction at the end was the same as mine. Seems like Aurora chose to truncate a few bars on the outro (which was kinda disappointing seeing how this is the climax and pinnacle for the song's message), but maybe it was intentionally done in the production to be more modest and not to "upstage" the original? Either way, that's my ONLY gripe, otherwise it's perfect. Alanis and Aurora share a similar "whisper to scream" singing style.
