I loved her hair. I was astounded at the SOUND that came out of her! She's so small! And trust me, if you genuinely like a crowd response, you NEVER get tired of the stage. I did some stage work a million years ago, and I STILL miss being able to make people laugh. Knowing that you are the cause of that sound is like having cocaine stuffed up your nose. Not that I know anything about that. Wacken just seems to be the BIGGEST sing-a-long party in the world. It must be STRATISPHERIC to be on stage and have about 80 000 people hollering your lyrics at you.

Fun fact: when Anette abruptly left Nightwish in the middle of the Imaginaerum tour they had a show to do and they were in trouble for they didn't have a singer! That night Alissa and another singer called Elize Ryd filled in Annette's place for the show to go on. Later on Floor joined as a temporary addition to the band to continue the tour, and we all know how that ended up

"She is brutal"... just wait till you experience Angela live. Not to mention the brother guitar duo AE had for years with Michael and Chris Amott. Alissa is very talented and has an incredible overall range, guitarist Jeff Loomis is also a technical beast but the older lineup had a special sound and energy. Check out anything from the Tyrants of the Rising Sun dvd for a showcase in beautiful brutality. I'm partial to 'The Day You Died', Angela shows the emotional range that distorted vocals can provide.

She did a mix of clean vocals and growls with her old band, The Agonist. Thank You Pain is a good example of her manic back-and-forth with herself in two (or three) different personas. The Agonist's current singer, Vicky Psarakis, is also pretty good, but is more like former Arch Enemy vocalist Angela Gossow - more controlled and technical. Angela is now a manager/producer, sometimes doing guest appearances (including with Amaranthe). I preferred Alissa with The Agonist, but all in all I feel all three singers are right where they should be at this point in time. (Oh, yeah... There's also that one time Alissa sang with Elize Ryd as they filled in for Anette with Nightwish... And later sang with Floor, Elize, and Tommy Kerevik of Kamelot on Nightwish's Last Ride Of The Day...)

An added complication for this is that Angela used false cord growls in a style that emphasized short powerful bursts of just a few syllables at a time, while Alissa uses fry screams that are more flexible but less explosive and work best with longer lines. Alissa adapts the song by stringing multiple lines together. Doing Angela's version from Tokyo could but interesting, but a good song to see Angela if you don't want to do this again is We Will Rise, either in Tokyo 2008 or the MFVF 2010 video.

From their older songs with Angela, I'd like to recommend "Mechanic God Creation." Probably not the song you'd see recommended all over the place but it's got a few mean riffs. A bit more mid-tempo but definitely a heavy song and it always really stood out to me. Also, literally just picking the first full songs off of Anthems of Rebelllion, Doomsday Machine, or Rise of the Tyrant would be a good call. They really knew how to open up those albums.

I knew Chase would like her. Shes also a former Nightwish singer. 1 gig, 45 mins prep time, Alissa and Elyze Ryd sang to substitute for Annette, since she was rushed to hospital.

Angela sounds more brutal than Alissa, largely due to being a false cord screamer rather than a fry screamer

Regarding the vocals: Love both, kinda grew up into my today metal me with Angela, but Alyssa had me at the first vocals of 'we will rise' back in Wacken 2000something (was it 2006?!) My reccomendations: 'bloodstained cross', 'we will rise' and 'my Apocalypse' (all avialable and amazingly performed by either of these ladies) and 'avalanche' from the newer material. Regarding the music and instruments: yes, it gives you a loving smack in your face, the power is great, the writing is so dense yet fitting! And also the athmosphere in a live crowd is amazing and an experience.

Another badass female vocalist to check out would be Vicky Psarakis, she's now the singer for the Agonist(Alissa's previous band), she absolutely kills it in their song In Vertigo(no live vid of good sound quality unfortunately, but studio version is amazing too) 😊

Hello. :) Thank you very much for your interesting videos. You pick out things that I had never noticed, like the imperfections in Highway Tune and the doubled vocals in Pisces. Your analyses have made me listen much more carefully to songs. I'd like to suggest the song "Madness" by Myrath for you. They are a metal band from Tunisia.

Hey Chase, i hope you had a wonderful Saturday! XD Growling from a Man is not my Cup of Tee. Most i get the Impression about a Stoneage Man running for Hunting. But when a Woman is growling, it's another Kind of singing. Like the Singer of JINJER is doing. Or when Floor do it. Thanks for your Reaction and all the Things you see in a Song. Greetings Ben
