2021's new hotness is upscaling using machine-learning GANs trained on a suitable dataset. I decided to see how feasible this by revisiting a prior upscaling experiment from Phantasmagoria. The experiment attempts to upscale a 288x144 10fps video to something... better, I guess? Leave a comment with how you think it looks.
Oh, and I cleaned up the audio's 8-bit quantization noise in izotope as best I could.

This boggles the mind. I had an initial thought: "I'd like to see the original data at the same time." Then I realized there were four 'tiny' copies of it in the corners. The fire is kind of hilarious. It's fascinating watching the network try to make sense of his face in the earlier more distant shots.

The ghosting of the motion actually suits the scene. But those camera angles give you whiplash!
Now what would be really great would be remastering them from the original tapes. The raw footage I'm sure was interlaced and could be converted to 60p. I wonder if they still exist.

They were definitely shot to 30i, on umatic carts if memory serves.
The other video is way better
Some things look decent but some just looks awful.
