Athas, the world so harsh starting at lvl 3 isn't a suggestion it is a rule and character trees aren't just a suggestion but needed. Also the only world where Halflings are the race every sentient race sprung from(At least in the original lore.). Two things about the elves, this is 2nd edition remember, didn't get 3rd/4th rules or lore, but they also had shorter life spans compared to other setting elves and they were considered lazy, yeah they did all that running but they also always looked for the easiest way to do anything. For instance loved raiding caravans to get all the supplies instead of hunting and crafting themselves. Love this setting, so hoping it makes it into 5th and soon!

Dark Sun was a completely unique post-apocalyptic setting. It was amazing, and I still re-read The Prism Pentad book series every couple of years. All the art by Brom was breathtaking as well.

Dark Sun 5E would be fantastic to see. Perhaps they'll reimagine Anauroch in the manner of Chult. I'd be on board for that.

Dark Sun 5th editino style would be really cool. I was impressed with how different the upcoming Chult adventure booked seemed but a Dark Sun adventure/supplement book would take that even further. Alter races, new monsters, redone in-depth survival mechanics. Would love a setting that is so different from the general fantasy/swordcoast vibe everything released has so far.

Pterran, dray, aarakocra, mul, Thri-Keen, half- giant or goliath. These need to get the PHB treatment. With their bonuses, and skills proficiencies. I'm happy providing my own names. Named an elementalist of air Zephyr. Doesn't really matter what race he's from, it's highly appropriate.

(Reposting a previous reply of mine to another comment) The above video gave me inspiration for some extra ideas for a particular desert plateau in a partially randomized home-brew world I'm planning to 'incrementally' build (in a way, to avoid over-planning). I'm thinking about putting evil dwarf barbarians and blue dragonborn sorcerers in said desert.

I do enjoy reimagining races. Like for example in my world Elves tend to be more like iron age Celts generally. There personal skills and long life is countered by the decentralised and disorganised nations of many tribes in loose confederations.

I've never run or even played in a Dark Sun campaign (I started playing during the playtest for 5e when it was still called D&D Next) but from what I've heard about it, it sounds like a setting that I would love to DM.

I love Dark Sun, as actual published WotC content. The problem is, WotC seems have this fetish for Forgotten Realms. I mean, this is the 3rd edition where the majority of the material is set in Forgotten Realms. That said, I loved Elves in Athas and Halflings in Athas. This whole idea of a brutal, brutal world is great. Being a spellcaster, even a good spellcaster, is something you are feared for being.

So what's with the arbitrary no metal thing? I see no reason why there should be no metal, it would simply be very difficult to access in a desert.

  • @DyrgeAfterDark

Logan Hamby it's not arbitrary it's very much a Thematic enhancement to set Athas apart from your regular settings

  • @starslayer8390

I suppose I didn't properly illustrate my meaning. What I meant was why is there no metal on the world of dark sun if the sorcerer kings magic feeds on life? That would turn the world into a wasteland but metal should be unaffected. It doesn't make logical sense to me. And I do acknowledge that the setting would lose a lot of its flavor if everyone had metal weapons, I'm just saying that I don't see the lore justification for it.

  • @DyrgeAfterDark

Logan Hamby while there is no concrete reason in lore I always imagined that Athas was the birthplace of the Rust Monster which ravaged the Planet before eventually spreading to other planes at which point the Gods unanimously agreed to Quarantine the Plane

Maybe in this world the sorcerer kings discovered that metal weapons make the best enchanted weapons, and would be the best weapon to be used against them. As such, they removed it from existence using a powered up form of the wish spell, or through some ritual or some such. (here is my own story addition) Some say that the most powerful of magical metal weapons managed to survive the metal removal ritual, and lie deep in the vaults of a ruin so ancient it could have witnessed the gods themselves forming the world before they receded into the realms of the deities. Having lost most of their power, these weapons must be re-empowered so that they might be used to restore the world to its former magnificence.

Considering the fact that whatever gods there might have been obviously abandoned dark sun long ago, considering its state, that's as good as reason as any.

nickvjohn Dragonborn are a 4th Edition creation, and the only dragons in Athas are powerful sorcerer-Kings (and, far less frequently, random mages who become powerful enough) who transcend their humanoid forms. As such, Dragonborn never existed in Athas officially, though any DM can always include them in their game if they really wanted to. I wouldn't, personally.

I thought the dray could be likened to red dragonborn but I'm told they have no breath weapon. So an altered version would work. Don't listen to those telling you, "no dragons on Athas " because the sorcerer kings are desperately wanting to transform into full dragons.

"You're essentially a second class citizen. They're not gonna respect you" Stop right there. This is a FEUDAL setting, right? As in a setting with legally enforced caste systems, in which priests and emperors are the first class, kings and warlords are the second class, merchants and artisans are the third class, farmers and unskilled laborers are the fourth class, and slaves and prisoners are the fifth class? Stop and think about what "second class citizen" means.

Except that it's how they're literally, legally numbered. The first estate in medieval France was the priesthood, the second was the politicians and the military. The first varna in classic hinduism was the priesthood, the second was the politicians and the military. Edo Japan is a notable exception, with the military at the top, then farmers, then artisans and merchants - who in most caste systems fall between military and farmers, but that reflect the values and economy of Japanese society at the time - or rather the values tokugawa sama *wanted* Japanese society to have.

Sam Brockmann 1. so-called "classless societies" are the exception, not the rule. 2. If Dark Sun differentiates among royalty, skilled labor, and unskilled labor - if it has a concept of "noble", "commoner", and "peasant"? Guess what, that's three classes.
