I love Dark Sun. Writing on a campaign since the mid 90s, where the mind lords totally messed up with time manipulation. I hope for an official D&D5e Supplement, but there also some good fan-made resources and of course the great AD&D2 adventures series, which start with "Freedom".

Having played Shadowrun, Gamma World, and Cyberpunk, the post-apocalyptic setting is my go-to. I have yet to play Dark Sun, and hope that there's an official release of this setting for 5E sometime soon. Penny Arcade did a (4E) Dark Sun podcast, which I enjoy thoroughly.

The game "Desolation", which uses the Ubiquity system, is a post-fantasy-apocalyptic world. Very cool!

My Campaign in 4e was setup to be in 3 stages. First the players just try to survive any way they can to level 10, then from 10-20 they actively begin fighting for change in their city. Finally, in 20-30 they challenge the Sorcerer Kings directly and try to save the world. We took it to early teens before 4e became so unwieldy that it wasn't fun anymore. I'd love to go back and try the campaign again in 5e.

Sadly, I did not appreciate Dark Sun when it originally came out. Back then, Gamma World was my go-to PA RPG. I didn't come to appreciate the sword & planet vibe they were going for until much later after I became more familiar with John Carter and other similar tales.

Dark Sun was the second official setting I played, (FR first,) and I would love to see the timeline advanced. Here comes the BUT: I think it far more likely we'll see a return to Planescape first based simply on the recent UA for Gith and Eladrin, and because the Mystic and by extension 5E Psionics is going to require a LOT more development. Another thought, because Athas is cut off from the rest of the multiverse WotC may avoid it for a while since one could easily compare any Dark Sun product to repeating Curse of Strahd. I'll change my stance if near future UA's give us Muls, Thri-Kreen, and Defiler/Preserver wizard specs.

In case anyone is looking to maybe bring together their own survival themed Dark Sun-esque game absent any official 5e products out there right now I *HIGHLY* suggest picking up Davae Breon Jaxon's Cinematic Environs - Survival supplement by Critical Hit publishing. I'm not associated with him or them in any way whatsoever but I did pick it up a while back and it blew my f'n mind a little bit at the level of depth and grit in there.

While I loved the setting, one of the things I hated was that the 'metastory' destroyed the campaign setting. When I play/DM a setting, I want/intend for the players to big the 'Big Heroes' of the campaign. However, thanks to all the novels being made at the time (and all great, I might add), your own players were essentially playing the 'clean up crew' for the Mary Sue NPCs. While I didn't play 4th Edition, the thing I liked about Dark Sun for that edition was that they dispensed with the metastory, and let the DM determine the 'big things' of the setting, while still providing several 'small scale' adventures to help introduce players to the campaign. I currently focus on Pathfinder (5th Edition is great, but I just don't spend as much on gaming as I used to back in the day). I persoally would love to run Dark Sun in that setting (and thanks to a 3rd party product that reintroduces the 'classic' psionics rules for Pathfinder, you can use that as well). On top of that, Pathfinder has rules for 'Mythic' level play, and if the players ever hope to go against even one of the Sorcerer Kings, they will definately need Mythic Power levels.

In your opinion, do you have a best published module for early level characters, unfamiliar with dark sun, but seasoned 2e players?

I'm way late to the conversation, but I'm still asking anywhere people are talking about Dark Sun: does Athas have an Underdark? I've only just gotten into the setting and I haven't found a clear official answer yet. Big caves, sunken temples, and Under-Tyr I know are there, but what about a true Underdark?

GM 911! GM 911! Hey there Nerdarchy! I need a hand with something. My GM has a nasty flaw of making dramatic shifts in play style and tone in his games about halfway into the game but it only happens when he gets other people into the game. The last game we played was a pirate game, where I was running around fighting and taking names but when the other players joined in, it shifted into a town and army manager game where there was more concentration on politics and forging allies. My character was killed out of session for not changing gears and playing correctly, I was told this in a text. beheaded in his sleep. This was a 9 month into the campaign by the time this happened. I need to know how to handle this and your thoughts because I'm just about done with this crap. P.S. he;s not a bad GM or even a mean guy but when this shift happens there is no talking about it, ether join or die.

I'd ask him to start a fresh game instead of shifting the current game to whatever genre he decides to run instead, that way he isn't killing off your character just because he got hyped about something else and you can make a fresh character that fits the style and party of the new game.

I'm not super familiar with AD&D and its been a long time since I've gone over my 3.5 books, but it seems like there are some fundamental problems with putting Dark Sun in 5e. The one that's jumping out at me is if you're assumed to be starting at 3rd level then Clerics and Druids kinda break the setting. Create Water (or Create Food and Water, I don't remember if it's both) is a 2nd level spell. So from the first roll you've eliminated like the biggest resource challenge from the setting as I understand it. Is there something I'm missing here?

  • @skynyrdjesus

I was a little off, Create Water is first level and Create Food and Water is 3rd.

Would a druid even want to cast spells with the only kind of magic left kills plants and injurs living creatures? As for the cleric, all of the gods are long dead in athas.

The power of those spells is reduced on Athas, about a half-day of water from the first level spell. Half-giants also take twice as much sustenance. A third level caster cannot keep up with the demand and also be fully useful in combat

  • @skynyrdjesus

@@McHobotheBobo Okay, but that still leaves some significant world building issues within the 5e ruleset. If the setting regularly produces casters of above average power, and there are spells that produce sustenance readily and easily, even at a reduced rate, why would a character who can make them adventure if these substances are so precious, and how did this become such an issue? Any druid or any creature with magic initiate can make Goodberries, one of which sustains a person for an entire day, both food and water. Even if the spell is reduced considerably, this should be a valid solution based on the systems power level. Im not saying it can't be done, but you would probably have to handwaive a lot, cut a few spells entirely, and it would still be difficult to really recreate the feel of dark sun

  • @McHobotheBobo

@@skynyrdjesus Wizards are generally stoned to death by the public, and the sorcerer-kings brook no opposition. Eventually it will be less of an issue, for a small party this is inevitable. The higher-levels also get into issues of followers and npcs taking up resources, or at least it was in 2e. I do generally think 5e is a bit too vague and simplistic outside of combat to fully be Dark Sun without a well-developed system
