Psionics is everywhere on the world of Athas. In the Dark Sun Campaign setting everyone gets at least a little bit of psionic power. Some of the races even have psi-like abilities. Monsters have psionic powers, more common than magic items there are psionic items, heck even plants have psionics and they will try to kill you with it.

    i love Psionics and i LOVE Dark Sun. the fact that i have up until now always been denied the chance to play a psion in any game run by somebody else has only made me want psionics more.

    Loved darksun also planescape was pretty epic as well as a DM I have a whole taking my pcs for a whirly gig of fun romp through the mutiverse complex

    D&D has many systems to give your character mystic ability. I like all of them, but Psionics has to be the most unique form of mystic might. Wizards and Clerics can do similar stuff. Clerics and druids can do similar stuff. Most of the things a psionic character can do, only a psionic character can do and that is the appeal. Arcane Magic (Sorcerers, Wizards) Divine Miracles (Clerics, Paladins) Primordial Forces (Druids, Rangers) Psionic Powers (Psionicists, Psychic warriors)

    Love Psionics. Dark Sun as a whole is probably the most interesting setting they've got in my opinion though I've never played it. I'm mostly hoping to see an official 5e Dark Sun come out so I can see people play it on KZread, haha.

    If they do a Dark Sun book for 5E, I hope they don't try to cram Dragonborn, Tieflings, or Minotaurs in and take Clerics out like they did in 4E.

    Lets not forget what 4e Dark Sun did to half-giants making then into oger sized being . D&D 4e was a table top rpg and not D&D to me because they got rid of gnomes and halflings , added all the stupid daily , encounter , and at will powers just like most every single mmo does

    @@frankcastle1124 , the reskinning of half-giants in 4E was sensible, as anyone that lost a 2E party to a dominated half-giant ally could attest. That became less of a hazard when the rules were revised in the second Dark Sun boxed set, which made a 20 in any ability score worth less than an 18 in any other setting, and wreaked havoc on the psionics system for telepathic powers. Don't even get me started on the decision to restrict entire schools of magic to either defiling or preserving in later materials. I'm not sure where you got the idea that 4E got rid of halflings. They were in the edition's first PHB. Gnomes were in the second.

    Dark Sun didn't need clerics. The primal classes were better suited to elemental and spirit veneration, and the templar theme allowed players multiple options for that position. And as for cramming in dragonborn, tieflings, and minotaurs, they'd only be as common as your party wanted them to be, in a setting where the gith barely resemble their ancestors, the dray were once (mostly human), and dragons are not born, but made. The dragonborn fit right in as dray, which were playable in 2E, and it would take no effort to reskin a tiefling to better resemble a human, drop the lore, and have a character compatible to the setting.

    Dark suns is fun and dangerous because of psionic. The fact that you have to deal with it or use it on a daily if not hourly basis. In AD&D rules only humans had a chance 10% out of 100 if you had the right attributes. I just remember where one character in our party got lucky enough to roll for psionics that I fell passionately in love with the mental aspects. Dark Sun not only allowed this but fed it. The only bad thing about Dark Suns is the Game of Thrones affect. If you have a favorite character you enjoy playing, it's probably not for much longer. I liked playing my half giant with invisibility as a psionic school.

    So long as they fix up the Mystic/Psion from the UA to mostly deal in Telekinesis/Force Damage, Telepathy/Psychic Damage, and Body control/Shapeshifting, I'll be happy. I can engineer a decent facsimile of Athas with the proper Discipline set.

    Darksun may be alot more restrictive than what the casual player are used too. Hence why they haven't really made anything since 4e iirc

    Technically, "1st Edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons" - After the original edition of D&D was introduced in 1974, the game was split into two branches in 1977: the rules-light system of Dungeons & Dragons and the more complex, rules-heavy system of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (AD&D), the latter of which would eventually become the de facto "Dungeons & Dragons" commonly referred to.

    I never got to play Dark Sun, and I'd like to try itt in 5e, but as far as Psionics are concerned I've never really felt like they are different enough from magic.

    got any tips or suggestions for using psionics in 5th edition? I have the 3.5 book and some things could translate over. also I should note we are currently playing in the forgotten realms and will be transported to a dark sun campaign so.. that does complicate some things. thanks in advance for any advice on any of that.

    Damnit! All this talk of Dark Sun is really making me want to dig out my 2nd Ed stuff and play or run it (or at least Al-Qadim)! Argh! EDIT: I honestly haven't liked Psionics since 2nd Edition. They were wonky and a little overpowered at lower levels (although PSP costs did keep things a little more balanced), but they made sense categorized as they were (six Disciplines, each with greater powers "Sciences" and lesser powers "Devotions") and functioning as simple "proficiency checks." After 2nd, I generally avoided Psionics like the plague and stuck to my Wizards, Bards, Rogues, and various others (especially in 3E/3.5. Yeesh.)

    soon my party will meet a Blue (hobgoblin,psionic,monk) cause there is nothing better for bar brawls... any suggestions how to convert it well to 5e? I wanted to multi-class into psionics some characters, but for someone new to DnD its kind of a chore to do this..

    It always seemed to me that the anti-magic thing was for balance. Now, magic is no where near as powerful. How do think that would effect Darksun?

    If Wizards ever brings back Dark Sun then they NEED to rework Psionics to be separate from Magic cause not only is that Important to Dark Sun's lore but because they got lazy and said Psionics is just mind magic for 5e and that infuriates me

    @the11382 AD&D 2e explained it best. Magic, whether it be Arcane or Divine, comes from an outside force, usually the weave or a deity or nature for casters like Druids or Shamans. These outside forces allow a magic user to b3nd reality to their whims. Psionics on the other hand are separate as the source of power comes from within, and that source is the brain. Because of this, a Psionicst's power can at times be limited and to bend reality in the same sense a wish spell does, it takes great levels of concentration and willpower to do so. This is also why I like to pair Psionics with Martial training as it is the ultimate training of both body and mind, and in both cases, you yourself can be the source of power. Hope that helps.

    @@PsionicCavalier It is the power of mind where things start to make less sense to me. When there is a magical energy, you manipulate it and the environment changes. Psionics are the problems of Cartesian Mind-Body Dualism amplified. How does the mind bend the world?

    @the11382 Through sheer force of will. Psionics in a sense can be very alien and cause of that most monsters that have Psionics are usually Aberrations.

    @@PsionicCavalier Doesn't solve dualism. When someone wants something, that is a mental state. When an object is moving, that is a physical state. How does Mental -> Physical?

    Psionics and magic are the same thing, just different approaches. Where magic tricks and finesses reality by out smarting it, psionics use the brute force of will power alone.
