    Yeah this was my first one also. You sound like me but I did a lot of research on full size boat building. Anyways I found most Rc boat parts from website called harbor models and there are others out there. I also found lots of building parts such as the paint, batteries and fiberglass on Amazon. Good luck with your build!

    Honestly I think you should ha e gone with a classic laker like the Edmund Fitzgerald. They look a lot better and just have more class.

    I’ve watched a lot of the Great Lakes ship videos and enjoy their style but I grew up on the Columbia River in Oregon and seen this type of skipper/ bulk carrier everyday.

    axelsol89 check out this website called harbormodels. They have all the motors, props and prop shafts. There’s other websites also that sell the same stuff but cheaper. Hope this helps.

    thanks heaps mate another question how quick does it go? and is it more powerful then a 12v 60lb thrust trolling motor? im very new to this stuff so searching hi and low for any info or advice cheers mate

    axelsol89 no problem...check out my other videos and you can see the speed. It definitely isn’t fast but it is about a scale speed to the real deal. It’s a 12v system and basically a 12v drill is what’s powering it. A trolling motor definitely has more thrust and power to move a bigger boat.

    There seems to be a gap in the picture taking it goes from the skeleton or frame of the ship to having one side plank on it to being covered could you tell me a little about the process in between. I’m not familiar with working with fiberglass or anything so please be as detailed as possible also with names of products used there seems to be some sort of sheet that you covered the frame with and then it solidified could you tell me about that please.

    So basically I added a 1/2in foam board as a skin. Some of the builders in ship modeling Facebook group said I should have went between the ribs but that’s a lot of work. Lots of builders use thin plywood for the skin. I was also cautioned on mixing fiberglass resin with foam board as it could melt. I used totalboat 5:1 resin and the polystyrene boards from homedepot. Do a test first!! After laying the boards I filled in the gaps with some drywall compound I had laying around. After smoothing it out, lay down the fiberglass. Of course your stuffing box (drive shaft) should be installed prior. Make sure you get plenty around the shaft so that it won’t leak.

    Scratch Built RC Dozer and Ship thanks for replying ! Was just looking around for help, my team and I actually built a model bulk carrier from mild steel and some 3d printed parts for our final year project. Its 1.5m long, 0.2m beam, 0.3m draft, it weighs 60kg. Do you think the same motor you used are able to propel our ship at least 5knots ? And also what model of esc you used for the motor ? Thanks for helping :.

  • @scratchbuiltdozer

    @scratchbuiltdozer

    Edwin Woo yeah definitely! My ship is twice as big and the motor has plenty of power. The ESC I used is no longer available so you would have to find one that supports a the size of the motor your using. There is so many options and prices. Of your going to use the motor I recommend then you would need a controller that supports the 12v system.
