astonishing video! definitely learned a ton from you guys and I’m super thankful for the sharing of your knowledge with us. I have a question, tho. when checking the cylinder wall measurements (specially), isn’t it safer to lube the surface that is going to be measured, in order to avoid vertical scratching with the bore gauge? or is it unnecessary/harmful for the accuracy? thanks in advance!

Hey John! I'm happy you're enjoying the content! to answer your question , lubricating the cylinder walls will skew your readings, some say up to .001". You will also muck up your measuring tools. The marks you see from measuring are only witness marks and have no effect on cylinder sealing. You'll also notice that when we get to ring gapping, the rings will leave similar marks during the measuring process as well.

Good information and admire the work your doing. I am a marine diesel mechanic doing rebuilds but you do are like a rocket scientist compared with what i do. How cool it would be to do race engines like this

Bro, don't use the red scotch-bright on the mains, the red is like 300 grit use the grey it's about 800.

It's not like the roll lock discs where brown is coarse, blue is medium and red is fine.

Hey mate! Im aware of the grit, There is so little pressure and low passes. The red scotch bright has no effect dimensionally on the cast iron. Ive also tested in the past the finish change, and this also has no considerable effect on the RA finish after the align hone. You'll see in the rest of the video this area is measured in great detail.
