    I was at the fight and still to this day the best sporting event I've been to. Lennox truly won over the undecided fans that night. I remember Frank Bruno was ringside and got a big cheer pre fight but the reception Lennox got was something I will never forget. We had the cheapest tickets way up in the gods and cost me £50 which was a fair whack of dough. For me Lennox is a top 10 heavy of all time. Top 5 possibly. Thanks for the memories

    I love Big George as a fighter and a person but he was bizarre as a ringside color man. He said some strange things and and eventually infuriated Larry Merchant with his commentary. In a fight with Oscar De La Hoya, Larry challenged Foreman with angrily delivered and curt challenges like "Why?" and "So what". That was about the end for Foreman on this network. The single most head shaking comment he ever made was after a jab had knocked a fighter's head back, he commented "You don't wanna take those kinna punches...they make all da juice squirt outta yo neck!". If anyone can tell me what that means I would appreciate it!

    @@MrCrystalcranium Thats just silly. Foreman was very well respected as a commentator. If we talk about this fight between Lewis and Ruddock, just listen to what he said after the fight. He said the same thing when Sky interviewed him before the fight. Ruddock could knock out tired boxers but was overrated at seeking out knockouts, and thats it. Patterson trained him to box. How many jabs did he threw in the first round? Was Big George wrong? No, spot on.

    Riddick Bowe remembered that Lewis right hand, that hit him, during the Super Heavyweight Gold Medal main event, in the 1988 Seoul Olympics. He, wanted no part of fighting Lennox Lewis as a professional. Lewis was, probably, the hardest punching heavyweight that I remember ... and I've been an avid fan since the early 1980s.

    Lewis is definitely in the top 5 of all time heavyweight Champions and heavyweights period. He came to America and fought the best available competition during a strong era for heavyweights. He also avenged his only two losses in emphatic fashion. To add to this he finished on top. No ill fated comebacks or embarrassing losses when clearly past his prime like several who came before him. He was a very impressive boxer puncher for such a big man and surprisingly mobile with a formidable jab and a killer right hand. He knew how to fight tall and was probably the best outside fighter I've ever seen. He never took serious heavy punishment and almost always controlled the pace of the action in the ring without compromising his strategic planning. I can see Lennox beating the guys Ali beat with relative ease and beating the fighters Ali struggled with such as Norton and Frazier. Lewis had an impressive career and it stacks up well with the other legends when looking at the totality of his career.

    Me too. After Ruddock's wars with Tyson, who expected him to get blasted out by Lewis? Just goes to show that Tyson's skills had eroded some, and in fact Ruddock was vulnerable to speed. There was another wild card tho- Floyd Patterson. They were trying to change Ruddock's style. Not sure that ever worked, and it might have made Ruddock more vulnerable.

    Man, I don't wanna get into this cuz everyone's a genius and has their mind up so I'm wasting my time typing this. But Bowe did not duck Lewis. He was in talks to fight Lewis in 93 but Lewis wanted too much and his manager was playing games so, naturally, negotiations broke down and he opted for Michael Dokes then Ray Mercer, so long as Mercer beat journeyman Jesse Ferguson. Well, Bowe KOd Dokes but Mercer lost to Ferguson. The WBA told Bowe he would be stripped of his belt if he fought Ferguson instead of Lewis. Bowe didn't want to be bullied by anyone so, instead of being stripped he held a press conference and dumped the belt in the garbage. He quit before he could be fired. He was metaphorically saying "this belt and the WBA are garbage to me, they don't mean anything." Somehow, over time, Internet trolls interpreted that as Bowe being scared ergo Bowe's sour rep today.

    I get tired of all the US fight fans claiming every major win by any fighter outside the US is because the loser was past his prime, or finished by a career ending fight. In this case Ruddock (a Canadian) was finished because of the two defeats by Tyson. Every major win by Lennox Lewis can be explained away in this manner. Tyson was past his prime, Holyfield was past his prime, Ruddock was shot, he would have lost to Bowe. The reality is that Holyfield was a great fighter who was a blown up Cruiserweight and could not compete physically with Lewis; Bowe was a good fighter that ran a country mile to avoid having to fight Lewis; and Tyson was a "flat track bully" who beat no-one of consequence and is probably the most over hyped fighter in history and not in Lewis's zip code.

    Ruddock was my favourite HW back in the day until he met Tyson, my other favourite and got his ass handed to him, but that rematch with Tyson was a HELL of a bout, it won Ring Magazines "Fight of the year" if my memory serves me correctly. Ruddock was an absolute warrior through and through. Mike Tyson broke his jaw in the 7th or 8th round and he didn't even flinch! Kept battling on all the way til the end. Also one of the best left hooks/uppercuts i've EVER seen. You're right though, he was never the same after those 2 losses to Mike, but he was an awesome fighter and a great contender in his day. I would suggest the Ruddock vs Dokes fight, absolutely DEVASTATING knock out.

    Robert J Barnes First off...I'm not a Tyson 'fan boy' as you tried to lump me in as in that post you have. Second, WHO THE HELL is Phillip Jackson? As soon as he fought non-bums, he was exposed as the glorified journeyman he was. You didn't mention that after that 25-0 start, he went 19-13 for the remainder of his career, typically against better caliber of heavyweights. Ruddock before and after Tyson simply wasn't the same fighter. Anyone with any sense could see that. I didn't say Tyson 'wrecked' Ruddock...I stated that Ruddock was dulled by this point. And that was absolutely true.

  • @RobertJBarnes

    @RobertJBarnes

    9 жыл бұрын

    Manu Ginobilis Bald Spot You said " The "Razor" had clearly dulled by this point." Well, prove it. My point is that here is no proof that he was any less of a fighter. And that he may have actually improved. Obviously, the 25-0 with 23 knock outs, Phillip Jackson, was thought of highly enough to be in a title elimination bought against number one ranked Ruddock. In this fight, his new trainer, Floyd Patterson, finally got Razor to use his jab to set up power shots. He used the jab far more frequently than in recent past fights. He looked better than he did in any previous fight. Therefore, you cannot say, with any basis, that Razor was any less of a fighter when he fought Lewis.

Razor, with his new trainer, Floyd Patterson, had two fights after Tyson before this fight with Lewis. Both wins were by knockouts. In Razor's last fight before this, he looked his very best fighting against an undefeated knockout artist Phillip Jackson. Ruddock finally started to use his jab as Floyd Patterson was imploring him to do. Jackson was 25-0 with 23 knockouts and Ruddock knocked him out in 4 rounds.
