Razor MX650 Freewheel Upgrade

Upgrading a Razor MX650 Freewheel to a stronger BMX freewheel. These were always breaking and I upgraded to a beefier one. Should work for an MX500 as well.

This got me started but no washers needed. Just hone out the center to fit and use original cup for original fitment. I used EnC sprocket and bored it out to fit new freewheel but you gave me the idea so I commend you for that.

Great vid! I’m going to try this on my sons rsf650. Not sure if it’s going to work though, his issue seems to be the threads between the freewheel and the wheel itself are stripped out.

I was lucky to find both my SX500, and my RSF650 had the “old style” freewheel. I bought 2 ACS freewheels, and will modify mine in your image; that is if I don’t cut too deep into the threads. Ugh.

I find the stock freewheel has a lot of play before engaging the teeth. I was hoping to find the aftermarket freewheel would fit into the stock sprocket hole, did you find any others that might fit without modifying the sprocket opening?

No, both of the ones I used required modification. The sprocket is also aftermarket, so you may have different experience with the stock sprocket.

@@TimArmbruster I have a freewheel assembly from both an SX500 and an RSF650. Curiously, the RSF650 was the same as the “old style” freewheel assembly, featuring an actual freewheel, as opposed to the “new style,” single piece unit. Both freewheels were trash; and the RSF650 was fairly new. I bought two of these ACS units, and replicated your procedure; and all with a Dremel, a hammer and chisel. I did tongue touch the threads on the hubs, but each still readily accepts the new beasts. I shaved the inside of each rear sandwich ring as well; taking just enough material for the bigger ACS to fit. This eliminates the half washers; and puts the unit back together like the original design; with or without the guards. This allows, like yours, the ability to change out the rear cog if you wanted to if one wanted to acquire something stronger… I’m already thinking about belt drive. These bikes are too endearing to be logical.

@@TimArmbruster im trying to get the freewheel sprocket off. I must have a different one because it has the 8 prong type freewheel sprocket and a big circlip behind it. Have you seen this before? Does it have to be removed to get the freewheel off. Im using a 25” breaker bar 24mm deep socket and the 8 prong sprocket tool but it hasn’t loosened. I kind of want to shelve the whole complicated assembly and try to find a wheel with a wheel conventional bolt on sprocket.
