Lool my GTX 1050ti with 4gb of vram runs it at like 50 fps all low 1080p so even crap pcs can handle that

You probably notice but when connecting the gpu via thunderbolt you'll get much MUCH better performance if you'll connect external monitor - the reason is that the thunderbolt providing both input and output at the same time puts much effort on the cable and it shows in FPS.. Try connecting the 3080 using the core and to an external monitor :)

this video is perfect. ive got a 13" razer blade stealth from last year with a 5700XT in a razer core enclosure. i've been tempted to upgrade to one of the 2021 15" blade base models with the 3060 but ive been unable to find any decent comparative benchmarks. looks like i'll be buying one after seeing this!

Technically this is an “rtx 3080 gaming laptop”. However... Because you’re using usb type c and not pcie express, performance will be bottlenecked. Pcie express in MUCH faster than thunderbolt. External gpus like this work better with external monitors, you will gain a bit of performance... - It’s also worth noting that the lower end graphics cards actually work better with egpus. You’ll get more performance if you put a 1060 or a 1070 in there instead of an rtx 3080 Performance bottleneck is around 20% at its best on external monitors (for higher end cards) - It’s a lot worse on built in laptop screens. (I believe the reason for poor performance on the built in display has to do with how fast the gpu has to work to deliver the graphics - not sure though...) I’d recommend going with a mini itx build if you want to take up less space - At this point egpus just aren’t a good option if you want good performance. There’s just too much info going through that small thunderbolt cable to get the top performance - Egpus cover a very niche market. While they lack in performance, they make up for in portability - One day I hope we’ll reach a point where egpus are just as good as desktop PCs - Oh yeah one more thing, longer thunderbolt cables will hinder your performance further. It all has to do with how fast the gpu can deliver graphics to your laptop. - Also, different thunderbolt types don’t really do anything to further bottleneck on external monitors. - Internal displays are a different story though. Older thunderbolt types will provide less performance than the latest ones - Anyway I hoped I helped to explain external gpus for you guys 👌

One of the few exceptions is using the Alienware Graphics Amplifier (using a compatible Alienware system of course as it is a proprietary solution) as that uses a dedicated PCIe 3.0 x4 link for the best compatibility. With GPUs that aren’t memory bandwidth bottlenecked the performance is anywhere from 5-15% worse compared to using it in a desktop depending on whether you’re connecting it back to the laptop’s screen or if you’re connecting to an external display. The highest performance GPU compatible with it is the RTX 2080 Ti (3000 series will need a firmware update from Dell/Alienware and that’s assuming there’s enough demand for it). Also, TB4 should not have the same bottlenecks as that will also be a dedicated PCIe x4 link from the CPU but that won’t be coming to most gaming laptops till 11th gen Intel H series CPUs release (I think there are 11th gen H35 CPU laptops available but those have a capped 35 W TDP and only go up to 4 cores/8 Threads)

Amazing video! The blade laptops always look so nice! I'm not sure if anyone has explained this but the significantly lower fps with an external gpu is due to the fact data that would normally be sent one way through a pcie slot has to be sent to the gpu and back through a thunderbolt cable that doesn't have enough bandwidth for it, therefore there will be higher fps with a built in gpu connected direct to the laptop display than an external gpu connected through a cable. An external gpu will perform much better if the display output is to a monitor rather than the laptop display as data doesn't need to be sent two ways through the thunderbolt cable. Sorry if that explanation seems long and hard to read, in short thunderbolt doesn't have enough bandwidth to have signal two ways to a gpu, so there will be better performance with an egpu connected to a monitor. Hope this is useful for someone! Have a good day!

When using the e GPU, use an external monitor connected to the egpu for better and actual performance numbers. When using the internal display the performance will be way lower. This is due to the bandwidth limitation of thunderbolt, plus the signal has to be processed by the intel igpu when using the internal monitor which leads to serious performance loss.

Finally 2021 comes and laptops that are faster then my desktop PC from 2017 came out and the laptop you see here is about the same strength as my desktop.
