Hi everyone! I wanted to make this video for Christmas … but I only found my old files recently and so I’m doing it now instead… Heh, it’s still winter, and the bundle was delivered for the 25th of the month. :P
The two maps showcased here are ‘Rayman’s Winter Holiday’ and ‘The Chessmaster’s Castle’. Both are inspired by Ryemanni’s idea of a Rayman Redemption stand alone holiday-themed expansion (which was cancelled in favour of releasing ReDesigner faster).
The first is a very old and flawed prototype which features Rayman in a Christmas story where he must stop Mr Dark who returned in an alternative scenario and is trying to ruin the end-of-the-year festivities (Darktoon also remained loyal to him).
It starts in a regular section, but then throws you into a hub zone where you can select the next levels or go back to the previous ones. The goal is to collect enough Magician tokens to progress by unlocking more areas, in order to save the day and celebrate the Christmas Festival with Rayman’s friends.
It took a lot of inspiration from various games such as NiGHTS Into Dreams, Rayman The Dark Magician’s Reign of Terror or Crash Bandicoot Wrath of Cortex (it also uses their respective music).
You can notice I tried to replicate the ‘frozen’ Magic Minions from RDMRT, which I improvised since custom graphics weren’t a thing in ReDesigner back then. Same goes for its old music, as the stereo soundtrack wasn’t available before.
This map introduced a Megatoon acting as a comedic character replacing Darktoon after Mr Dark threw him out once and for all: Mr Darktooner (yes, even his name is a meme…)!
This guy is intended to be one of the three antagonists in the story alongside Mr Dark and Mr Stone, and he would often prank Rayman before becoming his ally.
By the way, you can break all the rocks obstacles he tricks you with, but it takes quite a lot of time. It’s an alternative exit for the most determined/stubborn players, and it also hides an additional joke … :P
The Chessmaster’s Castle is equally old as an idea, however, most of the work done on this level is recent, thus making it far better.
It’s an unserious sequel to Rayman Redemption where the Chessmaster decided to have his revenge on the limbless hero. He built a castle in a mountain area and lured Rayman by stealing the Great Protoon, so he can challenge him to various trials.
The Dark Magician makes a humorous appearance as his ally and has helped him constructing his new lair. He remains as a judge to prevent Rayman from ‘cheating’ in the Chessmaster’s challenges, albeit he grants him access to a warp room if you can locate it in the starting level.
I’m far more proud of this map compared to the other one, though it’s still amateurish in many regards. It’s also one of my first creations where you can enjoy the features added in ReDesigner’s latest updates!
There are no release dates for these levels as I have no idea if I’ll find the time to finish them, and this year will be extremely busy for me… Still, make sure to provide constructive feedback so I can eventually improve them.
Many things will be changed for the final versions (if they’re ever completed) and some content won’t be available in the prototypes, such as some music.
I’m mainly thinking of ‘Ice Dance’ taken from the Rayman 3 beta which is copyrighted and has been detected in this video, so I won’t include it.
