Rayman: Raving Rabbids (Wii) Retrospective | Down the Rabbid Hole

Ойындар

2006 was a rough year for Rayman fans, although many didn’t know it yet. Rayman 3 released in 2003, but it’s follow-up would never really come- to this day 3D Rayman is dead, and even now, 2D Rayman had a return in 2011 and a sequel shortly after, and has since been buried. Rayman 4 was at one point in early development, and had some concept art made, as well as very early prototypes, but the unveiling of the Wii had a huge impact on Ubisoft, who immediately wanted a rework to better suit the upcoming landscape. Rayman 4 was started over from the ground up, but initially was also a 3D platformer, with a new enemy, the Rabbids, who were, while still ugly-cute, a more serious threat in this now ambitious, open world game- it even got featured, in this state, in Nintendo Power. At some point, likely because of the Wii and its bizarre controller, this game morphed into a Party game, and the Rabbids series completely overtook, and outright abandoned Rayman, with 7 console games, counting this one, a spinoff crossover series with Mario, standing at 2 games, and a dozen odd phone games- all while Rayman is almost entirely dead and buried. Initially developed for the Wii, the game would also be ported to the PS2, as was the style at the time, PC, and after its immense success, to the Xbox 360- and fascinatingly, has GBA and DS versions that are 2D platformers that utilize the story and many concepts of the canceled earlier versions of the game.

I loved this game growing up, it was one of the very few games that ran on our Windows Vista tower, which didn't have a graphics card or anything. Replaying it though, was rough.
