Saw this video by chance. Kannadigas and Tamilians have so much in common. There is no reason for why we can't live like brothers. After all we drink water from the same river :)

Used to come with appa. After marriage my husband's uncle still takes me here. This place....brings greatest memories ❤ Kudos for doing this sir.
I'm a Malaysian Indian. Each and everytime I travel to South India, TN specifically it is my ritual to visit Mylapore. Kapaleeshwarar temple, surrounding bookstores and messes, and the cultural shops are simply my favourite. Now I really miss Mylapore since the last visit was in Sept 2019.

My father used to take me to Rayar's cafe in the year 1950, then it was situated near Mylapore police station ( Kutcheri Road) and there were no tables then and we will all sit upon the lengthy mat (பாய் )on the floor after a profuse welcome by the elderly Rayar ( " Banri swami! Kooth kolree!) வாங்கோ சாமி! உட்காருங்கோ,!) No ordering business! Rayar himself will serve hot iddlies and medhu vadas with very liberal serving of thengai chutney. Pure heavenly taste! No billing also. Everybody will pay the correct amount faithfully! And the elderly Rayar doubled up as cashier also in all smiles. Never seen such homely service ever since. The legacy continues. May God bless them.

Please don't go by what is played in political arena. Uptil recently, even pessimistically put, till 2000 atleast, udipi hotels were of vogue - - no frills, hygienic, taste, budget. Madras could be said that it gave run for its money to its neighbour Bangalore in kannadiga/konkani/tulu veg hotels. Such was the patronage. The advent of so called new-age, especially indulgence of politicians in this business has muddied and ruined the ecosystem, especially in Chennai. In this aspect, good old madras lost its finasse to direction less chennai.

One thing I want to add is the first ever hotel business across Tamilnadu was started by Kannadigas only. Now mostly the name Udupi prevails but no Kannadigas there , it is owned by someone else.

Rayars are madhwa brahmins settled in Tamilnadu for hundreds of years, Tamils for practical purposes
@revolution2162

But in Karnataka, the Kannada madhwa Brahmins are not in the hotel business. In Bangalore, it is only run by kundapur Brahmins or Mangalore Shetty's or Konkani gsb's all of Karnataka origin. I'm yet to visit a madhwa brahmin eatery.

How so lovely. I left Chennai about 45 years ago. You folks rekindle my love for Mylapore . Thank you
When ever I m in Chennai I make it to eat here. This video is 100% true and I've experience every time.
My memory about Rayar mess dates back to over 50 years from Kutchery road days. Then the old man Mr. Rao ji was sarvesarva .My visits to Meenakshi Nadi Jodhidalayam or Amruthanjan Pain Balm factory was assosiated withRayar Mess. It is a place with real history.
Thanks for creating and sharing this video on Rayars Cafe...when I was studying at Vivekananda college in the late 1980s, I was a regular visitor especially when my father used to come down from New Delhi and take me there for breakfast...for about ₹5 we'd have polished off awesome idlis, pongal and wonderful accompaniments that went with them, not to forget washing it down with some excellent filter coffee...the owner then was the thatha...he would put so much love into his cooking...a very iconic place and a must visit place for all Madras visitors especially in Mylapore and if you enjoy lovely homemade style tiffin! ❤️

If this was somewhere in Europe - this eatery would be celebrated as Artisanal and given 5+ Michelin stars ..We need to celebrate these kind of eateries a lot more

It's a great South Indian food prepared by this family for several decades. Most people who come here are regular customers, because it's more like home food served with love and affection. It's become a landmark for south indian food in Chennai. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍.
Hat's off to the family and the person who narrated especially with lighthearted smile superb👌👌
Thanks for this video. It brings back many treasured memories as I'm from Chennai!!!
Awesome. Love food art series ❤️ We went there once. There was no space to sit. We were told many famous Tamil actors used to come there.

I used to be there regularly in the 80s, both in arundal street and next to post office. Such a lovely place and kind people. His father used to say "rendam number tablukku kara chatni podu" and used to calculate bill in slate and balpam. Great team 🙏🙏

Brilliantly shot, exquistly narrated... Hats off!
Amazing Authentic food destination at very normal price too.. It maintains Authenticity too, Sambars made here dont include Onion in it.. Those chutneys are mouth watering .. Mylaporian for 30 years and my fav breakfast destination - Rayars Mess
Me too, I have had the pleasure of enjoying their breakfast on several occasions.
We were ones there, and loved the food, disappointed that we couldn't go again.
Beautifully captured ❤️
Nostalgic! Reminds me of an incident when I was there. An old house with menu on a slate! Gemini Ganesan was literally ordered by the elderly gentleman to just have a " murugal" dosai and no carrot halwa for which he was pleading. Such bonding they had!
Oh my God. Amazing one. Wholesome

Came across this KZread video completely by chance. Seeing the environs, the mood, the ambience and the beauty of Sanatan Dharma hanging heavily in the air, I'm immediately reminded of similar quaint little eating outlets in Bengaluru, especially in Malgudi (Malleswaram and Basavanagudi) where almost exact replicas of Rayar's Mess is available almost every km. Thank you Rakesh for a nostalgia filled trip down memory lane. Love and respect from Bengaluru. May the legacy of Shri Srinivasa Rao and Rayar's Mess continue for another hundred years.
