I work as a custodian in a high school. Recently the band was rehearsing a song called Moscow 1941. As I was cleaning I would hear it and think “Why does this sound familiar?” Then one day it dawned on me. It’s the melody used for the “Yo yo yo yo yo” part of this song.
@nataliavasilyeva3349

I think that yo yo song originally is about heroes of the red army (time of the civil (red/white) war after 1917 October revolution) . Interesting that song called Moscow 1941 -year of begging second world war for Russia . Anyway, how Ray got to know it :) ? I like the beats of that yo-yo song .

I've been a long time fan of Ray Stevens and I've commented on this video in the past but given the war that's currently happening between Putin and the Ukraine this music video's gotten some re-discovery. The song comes from Ray's 1988 comedy album, "I Never Made a Record I Didn't Like". It was Ray's second music video of his career following 1985's "Santa Claus is Watching You". This song, having been recorded in 1988, came along in the final years of the Soviet Union's dominance. The Soviet Union collapsed in 1991. The opening routine with Ray's vocal impressions of Reagan and Gorbachev weren't in the recording found on his 1988 album...this intro was added for the music video and, as you watch the video, the actresses portraying the wives appear throughout as a visual gag.

song is really about the Soviet K-129 sub that sank NW of Hawaii back in the 60's. It was over took by a crew of renegade KGB agents trying to start WW3. The US salvaged the sub in the 70's and found one of the 3 nuclear missiles in the launch state. It seems the captain would not release the real launch codes and the missile exploded in the bay. They were trying to make it where we would blame China by getting so close before launching. Thats why you see the Red Star on the sailors hats and not the Soviet hammer and sickle.

ray stevens was the cletus t. judd of his generation, only he didn't parody anything. His songs were all original, and a lot of them were laugh out loud funny! you should listen to Family Funeral Fight, it'll make you think twice about going to your next family gathering.
@TherealRNOwwfpooh

Actually, he did. This song _Surfin' USSR_ is, in fact, a loose parody of the Beach Boy's _Surfin' USA_ with some Cold War leftovers included. _Gitarzan_ was obviously a parody of _Tarzan_ & the recognizable melody lifted from another song. _The Streak_ lampoons the fad of streaking (running around buck naked, flying in the face of indecent exposure laws). _Help Me Make It Through the Night_ & _It's Me Again, Margaret_ were songs that been previously sung much more seriously before (especially given the subject matter of the second one) by other musicians but were heretofore given a comedic tweak to them by Ray's visual gags, silly facial expressions, and other humorous antics.

Such a great little time capsule of the 80s Reagan/Gorbachev era. Good stuff
One of my favorite songs from you. I have loved your music since I was....geez, I'm almost 40 now and, well, I was a kid. The earliest I can remember was watching your video of Santa Claus Is Watching You, when I was about 11. So a long time.
a fun song of the times, a very well done parody of a classic Beach Boys song. I hadn't heard this song in years and I am impressed with just how well it pulls it all off.

I love how this brings back memories of everyone's grandparents & childhood. I used to love watching the vhs Christmas special with my brothers, mom & grandmomma as a kid. Times sure have changed.
I had this on VHS. The tape included help me make it through the night and the streak etc.
This music is my childhood.
This song is hitting a different in 2022. XD
The fact he perfectly imitates Mike Love is brilliant!
still to this day i have the biggest crush on the blonde in the heart shaped sunglasses... yeowza
I work as a custodian in a high school. Recently the band was rehearsing a song called Moscow 1941. As I was cleaning I would hear it and think “Why does this sound familiar?” Then one day it dawned on me. It’s the melody used for the “Yo yo yo yo yo” part of this song.

I completely lose it at the "yo yo yo yo yo" part... hahaha. I love comedy that's taken literally.

With "ROCK + ROLL" you have: "WEIRD AL YANKOVICH". But with " COUNTRY + WESTERN" we have our own: "RAY STEVENS". Can anybody imagine what it would be like if: " RAY STEVENS" AND "WEIRD AL YANKOVIC" went and did a song TOGETHER!

I was just looking up the song Surfing USA by Beach Boys (which I suppose this is a parody of?) and this came up on the autocomplete searches. I have no idea who Ray Stevens is, I'm not american and was born in the early 2000s, so you could imagine my confusion watching this lol. This was quite the long fun fact and made me a bit less confused, thanks for the insight, sir

That was so fun. When Ray came out with this I was so busy studying in medical school I had no time. I missed all of this.
My grandfather had this on VHS and I think I wore that sucker out watching it many times every summer break.
I've laughed ever since this came out. FUNNY!
The remake of The Hunt For Red October is looking pretty good.
Ray Steven’s is an absolute master at writing this type of material. Talented beyond. I miss this stuff. It’s a damn good thing to laugh. Need more of it.
Absolutely fantastic, I don't know how he does it, the man can make any situation crack you up. This version is not quite as good as the CD version.
-What’s this on your forehead, Mikhail? -Oh, it’s coincidence only, my mother must’ve been frightening by a map🤞😁
song is really about the Soviet K-129 sub that sank NW of Hawaii back in the 60's.

I never heard this song before. Love the Beach Boys! Love Ray Stevens! Must've been made in the '80's...maybe inspired by some topical news event or something.
Haven't heard this in over 25 years. My grandparents introduced me to Ray Stevens when I was a child and they were still alive. 25 years later "Yo... Yo Yo Yo... Yo..... Yo Yo Yo Yo.. Yo... Yo Yo Yo....Yo..Yo Yo Yo Yo Yo Yo Yo Yo Yo Yo... Yo... Yo Yo Yo Yo Yo Yo Yo Yo Yo Yo " pops in my head out of absolutely nowhere.

ray stevens was the cletus t. judd of his generation, only he didn't parody anything. His songs were all original, and a lot of them were laugh out loud funny! you should listen to Family Funeral Fight, it'll make you think twice about going to your next family gathering.
@TherealRNOwwfpooh

The absolute best! :D
This is how we end the Russo-Ukrainian War - by inviting both Putin and Zelenskyy to a beach party in Malibu, and they hash out their differences over marshmallows and yo-yos.
Catchy
Now I have to look this up: Which came first? This or Skeet Surfing?
That's an American treasure right there.

Seems like this is now back relevant to todays time 😅
Reminds me of the old movie "The Russians are Coming" which involved a Soviet sub grounding off, IIRC, Cape Cod, when the captain wanted to see some of the US. I love the 3 Lenin and one Lennon pictures. I'd rather be Skeet Surfin', but that's Top Secret (the movie)
