I’ve loved Ray Bolger ever since I was a child. Knew him from the wizard of oz obviously. Suck a brilliant underrated dancer.
Back when you had to be a triple threat to get good film work. Acting, singing and dancing. That's cool that Phoenix watched this as his dance inspiration for Joker. Ironically, Ray Bolger is known most for his role as the Scarecrow in The Wizard Of Oz which is also the name of a D.C. foe of Batman. You see how it all intertwines and comes together?

Old film buffs should know who this man was LONG before Joker. Not just the scarecrow from the wizard of oz, but a dancer SO ELASTIC that he could make even Fred Astaire cry. It’s nice to see an oldie and goodie brought back as inspiration for a new film
Now i can really see the Joker in this, Joaquin really took this dance and interpreted it into one of the most iconic dances and powerful scenes of our time. Truly incredible.
It's a soothing experience watching this dance. Thanks Ray and Joaquin lol

Brilliant. Joker is Brilliant. Just watching this dance and remembering Joker dancing down those lengthy stairs with his lit cigarette. Did you see those kicks!? Perfection.
Although Joaquin phoenix and Todd Philips admitted that joker heavily borrowed from this routine- there is something very Christopher walken-esque about this from the film Communion and king of New York in his dancing scenes

People always talk about Fred Astaire when they talk about tap, but Ray Bolger has always been an inspiration of mine. His taps are so clear yet light and gentle; the amount of control this man has while _looking like_ he's so loose and free is unreal. If you're not a tap dancer, this dance probably looks really good. But if you _are_ a tap dancer, well, you know ;)
So graceful, it's beautiful.

He did this routine nearly 20 years later on the Tonight Show exactly the same. Brilliant!
Ray Bolger was also the scarecrow in the "Wizard of Oz" and a brilliant dancer.

wow you can see the Scarecrow start to show here and there. what a wonderful talent.
Had a crush on the late Ray Bolger as a kid. You guys DO know he also played The Scarecrow on the beloved The Wizard of Oz. Interesting to see some of this in the new movie with our beloved Phoenix.
Vim do futuro avisar que Joaquim Phoenix ganhou o Oscar, reinventou a sétima arte, dividiu a história entre o antes e o depois do filme Joker e se inspirou nesse vídeo.
Now that's entertainment!
I came here remembering Ray performing this song with Judy Garland on her TV show. I love you Ray.
Thank you, Joaquin. ❤️
Amazing how something so old can inspire something so fresh and new. (Talking about the Joker movie btw.)
"A veces correr, es más rápido que caminar" - El bromas 2019 -
Really love how Arthur's descent into madness is mirrored in this dance alone, it starts of quite rigid and reserved, but transforms into something quite cocky and maniacal towards the end. They really couldn't have chosen a betrer inspiration for Joker's movements.
this is a gem
