frankdrebin. Warren De Martini is such a natural blues and rock guitar player. He plays with so much feelings and technical ability. Warren took his place in immortality and in my opinion, bested Schenker. Warren is without a doubt one of the greats of all time.

Said this before awhile back, not only is this one of the best live trade offs ever recorded, but the camera-person just did a phenomenal job of capturing what we as "Guitarist's" needed to see. Again sweet content and camerawork!! Peace.

Wow this is great. Back when guitarists improvised live, the good ol’ days when notes sounded interesting.

They are both geniuses and have both written brilliant songs and solos. Both in their own right are guitar legends and gods. I love them both and were inspired by listening and transcribing nearly everything both of them ever recorded..

Between 2:10 and 2:27, is some of the most badass shredding from two guitar players you'll ever see!

Michael's tone and vibrato are incredible. His playing is the perfect combination of feel and technique.

Wow! I've never been a big fan of RATT but I think I just became a convert. The energy from this show literally jumps out from the video and you find yourself being swept up in it just as if you were there (watch oican00's other clips from this show.) As for those who want to argue Schenker or DeMartini; Keep your arguments and I'll kick back and watch two very gifted and inspiring guitarists fire away on all cylinders and enjoy every minute of it!

Fun and the end of an era when there was still just a little bit of blues left in rock.

Warren is a brilliant player. All the haters need to realize that, had they been up and coming, extremely talented players in the 80's California scene looking for a break you better believe they would have joined a band like Ratt. It was more or less assured success, it opened doors, and the opportunity for Warren to play with one of his heroes like Michael would never have come up otherwise.

Warren DeMartini is still a legend. Great lead guitarist. At just 15, he was a sought after guitarist for bands in the San Diego area.

WARREN will go down in history someday as one of the best to ever play guitar. In my humble opinion, next to EDDIE, WARREN is my favorite guitarist of all time. Ratt really started Rollin in 84 when I was 16 in highschool still one of my favorite bands. WARREN ABSOLUTE LEGEND..............

Few will probably agree with me, but I feel Warren actually was better than Eddie, at least in terms of fluidity of technique and a larger wellspring of soloing variation.

Warren DeMartini is considered to be one of the best from that era and genre. MANY guitarists consider him THE best ever from that genre. He was my favorite and greatest inspiration of all during a heightened time of great players.

I once attended a Gary Moore show at the "Country Club" in Reseda. sitting in the audience at one private table: G. Lynch, S. Lynch, Vivian Campbell, Steve Lukather, Paul Gilbert, Stu Hamm, Satch and Billy Sheehan....OMG!!!!!! EVH was in attendace in the sound booth upstairs! Who cares what any of us thought....his peers said it all. That is respect. Schenker=LEGEND....Peace

Michael is self taught, and rarely uses his pinky finger. He rocks it out from the soul, not from anything else. That's why I always liked him.

Cool video, thanks for posting. Was at the Irvine Meadows (CA) show shortly before or after this, I'd imagine--LA Guns (and maybe Bang Tango?) opened for them. Pre-Internet, so we had no idea about the Crosby/Schenker swap going in. Good show, far as I can recall.

@myksbox: thanks brother! Jake E. is a true unsung hero. The last time I saw him play was in a bar in Vail. Mandy Lion was singing! I got to admit that I really fell in love with Badlands in 89 and have to say that though I love all his work that "Jade's Song/Winter's Call" and "Street's Cry Freedom" are still my favorite pieces of his. Ozzy didn't have a clue. I do like Zach but he doesn't have a quarter of the feel that Jake E. Did....keep the faith.

schenker has been doing his thing since 72' with the Scorpions, and this just shows that even decades later he's still up there with the most popular at the time. Technically proficient and stylistically his own. great vid.

It's always cool to watch two players trading off smouldering licks!

For the last time: the blond guy playing a V is Robbin Crosby, founder and original lead guitarist of Ratt, way before Warren showed up. Robbin died in 2002 of a heroin OD. Michael Schenker is a German guitarist who started with the Scorpions (briefly), left them for UFO at age 19, quit to form MSG, etc. You should ALL be ashamed of yourselves for being such complete dummies when it comes to rock guitarists. And if any of you consider yourself to be some sort of great musician, think again. You can't even tell the difference between two completely different legendary guitarists, and the guy actually playing is IN RATT! Wow. Such sheep, I swear to god. Each and every one of you, useless and pitiful.

Best 'Way Cool Jr.' EVER .

This is great, but I wish there were quality recordings of Warren live. Dude had his own style that was instantly recognizable. And in an era where everyone was trying to out shred or out chops everyone else; Warren started playing deeper in the pocket. Always playing w/ feel, fluidity, and emotion. Most overlooked player from the 80's, imo.

Warren was on fire here; don't think Schenker was at his best tho. Either way, I think the audience got its money's worth that night.

Well, Schenker was just filling in with the band at the time, so he probably was not trying to show the main guy up. Both are such great players, and would have been great to witness a show with these two.

Man all of your footage of Ratt and Warren DeMartini is beyond fantastic ! All of this stuff from the Detonator tour of Warren DeMartini that you have put up, from a guitar player's perspective is GOLDEN !! I HAD to sub !

Wow I missed some heated discussion I love Michaels playing the first time I heard Lights out on strangers in the night in 79 it changed my life all I could think of was guitar sence then I have met Michael several times each time he remembered me and has signed almost every l.p and c.d. of his I own I will sum his contrabution to guitar as this he quietly revolutionized the guitar he has never had the chart success so his legend was passed on everytime someone heard him the first time

Nobody will remember how fast Jason Becker, RIP, played 16th notes or Russ Parish (Who was in my class at GIT in 1986 and was 17 at the time) playing note for note in every frickin open lab session with Paul Gilbert.....we will all remember G. Moore's "The Loner" or Ronnie Montrose's "Town without Pity" or lest I forget LIttle Stevie Vai's "Blue Powder". Its all about what they created as performers, players and as inspirations to all of us.

I would say both of them are the best guitar players I have ever heard.

These two are top class guitar players with unorthadoxed styles of playing (picking hand-wise), and don't just shred like monsters. Melodic phrases, picking patterns and technique were key in this solo. I've seen many dual guitar battles, and never was one as good as this one... Sucks how I didn't get to see this concert...

In the end of the day ... It ROCKED... Nothing like jamming with friends .and making some cash.

saw schencker in cincy unplugged. I lucked out...Metalica played closebye the same night. So...All the kids went to that... I got to see him play upclose...it was moving.

As for myself I got to meet Mr Lukeather backstage in Cph and the first thing he did was to pass me his JD bottle that he just had taken a sip from and ask me "you want a hit of this?" I got to meet my hero and drink JD from the same bottle in one single moment. Don´t get no more r & r then that. Then we talked about his sons band Isolation for a while and he was really cool. I talked to everybody in ToTo that night but JD part with Luke tops it all.

I remember reading an interview it Warren about when Ratt were on tour with Ozzy, Warren laughed big time when Jake and him jammed and jake had to use his thumb-to-pinkie to match Warren's index-to-pinkie expansion. he thought it was a great laugh and called people over to their hotel room to see it.

Schenker and Uli Roth are in a league of their own and thats a facts.

Fantastic guitar solos by both players. Michael Schenker actually fit the band pretty well with his trademark sound, chops, and overall stage presence (forget the bicycle shorts). Warren had the upper hand and his guitar is louder in the mix due to the camcorder location, but Michael stood his ground with a few familiar licks: 0:14 - 0:18 (Armed and Ready), 0:53 - 1:02 (Ulcer), 1:12 - 1:15 (Victim of Illusion), 2:12 - 2:17 (Save Yourself intro).

I wish, that would of been great to see. I read that in a Guitar World interview with Warren around 1990, I believe. Btw, I wish Zoom would release a Warren Demartini Zoom multi-effects pedal, like they did for George Lynch. That Lynch pedal has some nice effects for the price.
