- Holy shit there's a cheats menu
- I don't know why everyone's having such a hard time with the hoverboard races guess I'm just good (OHHOOOO)
- The shotgun turns enemies into bad pixel art oh god oh man
- The train sequence in the 3rd level good lord someone stop this game it's on fire it's burning me ow

    Refreshing to hear someone else praise Ratchet's attitude in the original. Some people hate it because he was "too mean". I loved it because his flaws reflected his age and maturity. Being easily irritable and sarcastic fits a teenager who was thrown in the middle of saving the world. Over the course of time, he grew into a noble, level-headed, and refined weathered galactic hero. His transition gave character depth.

    Plus, I just flat out love the raw attitude of younger ratchet, letting his anger get to him and showing just how much of a badass he could be. "HE.....IS....GOING...TO....PAY!"

    While this game is of quality, there's a unique heart and soul in the original and sequel. Their overall "vibe" is darker and exclusive. It comes from being less refined, the amazing music, the worlds, and being alone with just Clank. Maybe I'm the only one who senses it, and I don't think they could ever replicate it. Not that they'd want to do so, but that's why I'll always prefer it.

    ThreeDaysOfDan For sure, but I didn't really mind it. I think it's cool he had flaws, as opposed to being a paper-thin "boy scout" protagonist. As mentioned before, his attitude also provided a foundation to progressively build his character.

    Sidenote: That voice actor has been used in EVERYTHING annoying in the past few years. He did a decent job in Invader Zim as Zim himself and I get that maybe the team at Insomniac wanted to hire him just as a nod towards that series since this also has to do with aliens, but fuck... Also they used him more than once in this title alone for the scientist and the Chairman of Novalis. Hearing his voice multiple times for different characters, that it doesn't even fit, kinda made me upset.

    +Keith Ballard The problem is that everyone hated Ratchet in the first game because he was a snarky dick, so I guess Insomniac decided to change it this time around to just make him "likable" from the start, but in doing that we end up losing all the character development he goes through in the first game to make him likable in the first place.

    Pretty much, yeah :L Along the same lines, the reason Nefarious has suddenly turned up in this game when he was nowhere to be seen in the original is because he's the franchise's most well known villain, however his presence in the storyline really just makes zero sense. Quark's character is also kind of mashed in that same way, by giving him a sense of morality at the start of the series he really has no reason to do a heel turn and become the villain in the next game. Honestly, I could write a full essay on every way Insomniac and Rainmaker dropped the ball on the remake, and tbh I'm really considering it. There's so much to cry out against here.

    +Keith Ballard Yeah, I (regrettably) only got around to playing the first game as a kid and this is something I immediately noticed when they were showing the remake off a few months ago. Both Rachet and Clank were incredibly bland and tame compared to their old, witty and snarky selves from 2002. This characteristic between the two was (IMO) integral to the game. The lack of it removes everything I loved about the original game. I'll still give this a go whenever I happen to pick up a PS4, but I could be playing the rest of the old games for the first time instead on my PS3.

    Well, supposedly at least. Looking at him now, I honestly think it was a good contrast to have him as a bit of a tosser to Clank for a while. It's a refreshing break from y'know, A) calm, relaxed every day guy with furry sidekick, and B) calm, relaxed every day furry guy with a nerdy tortoise and strongman hippo for sidekicks. It makes his eventual character shift in the second game onwards a lot more exciting and engaging imo

    I know this was posted 3 years ago but: T.J. Fixman, the normal writer for the Future Series, wasn't allowed to write on this project because the director of the movie decided he could do a better job than both T.J. and the secondary writer they hired on. Not that I think T.J.'s writing could have fixed many of the issues since what he wrote for the Future series is filled to the brim with plotholes and retconing a lot of material from the past games and EVEN from certain Future series titles, but it does help explain why this entire project turned out a mess and even why there were differences from the game and movie to begin with. With all of that said: T.J. decided to leave the specific team that works on R&C games at Insomniac which I am kinda glad about (because of the aforementioned details) but it does explain why we haven't seen a new title in the series in this time span.

    +ScarletFame Yeah, it seems pretty insidious to me. I'm all for movies based on video games, but I don't think joint projects like this are a good idea. A game or movie should receive the full attention of the team working on it, and they certainly shouldn't be sharing content. That's just absurd. Probably profitable, though, so I doubt we'll see Sony drop the routine any time soon.

    This is a good game on it's own, but as a remake it's utterly disgraceful. In their desperate attempt to "fix" the original story, they instead ended up with the blandest and most uninspired story in the whole series. Generic, unmemorable music. Only 2 weapons from the original game. 6(!) planets were cut. And it runs at half the framerate. God, what a heaping pile of disappointment this game turned out to be.

    +CrimsonColossus I will say that quite a few of the original games levels got quite deservedly cut or massively edited, but I was still kinda salty that my two favorite areas of the original game were removed, those being that warzone set at night planet and the final level. They also changed the final boss to a much much less enjoyable fight. Also note, they added extra levels as well.

    The Ratchet and Clank original Series was about how consumerism is bad (or at least should be taking with a huge grain of salt) and in turn taught its players to see past vapid, superficial, things... then in the Future series it literally became that vapid and superficial kind of thing we were taught to distrust. I uh, personally hate how shallow this particular game is because it takes all of that out, the mechanics feel clunky compared to the original (since it's running on an engine made to have animations play at framerate speed rather than the game speed... which would be fine if when the slowdown happens it didn't elongate the animation time for literally everything, meaning that if there's a whole bunch of stuff on screen, like a bunch of bolts, that stuff will stay on screen longer which means that it's increasing the amount of time that the slowdown will be there for... really bad way to code an engine (Also an issue with the Future series)), cuts entire levels, completely alters the story to mash Ratchet and Clank 1 with Ratchet and Clank 3 (The hall of heroes is just the QForce except with characters that seem like they were ripped out of the Future series and even one of them is pretty much exactly the same as Talwyn), took out a lot of the UNIQUE weapons from 1 that allowed interesting set ups (like how the taunter would work with the mines or the visibomb would allow for another way of strategically playing) and even took out the extremely comprehensive idea behind Difficulty Gauging where if you were doing well it would alter itself to be harder or if you were doing poorly it would be easier so it could instead have a regular difficulty choosing system (granted they stopped doing that the moment Deadlocked came out which is a real damn shame since that was a really nice way of doing it without babying the player). It just does not feel good in any regard and shits all over the fanbase of the series, yet most of the fans are okay with it because...? I'm sorry for this rant but I'm rarely passionate about anything so bare with me. I'm someone who is trying to develop my own games because games like the original 3 R&C titles and zelda and Kingdom Hearts (1 and 2, past that I don't care because of all of the mess thats all in lol) exist. Whats um bizarre is that if you ask ANYONE from Insomniac Games about their opinions on the first few titles is that they will almost unanimously say they were awful in most regards until T.J. Fixman showed up and T.J. is revered as a golden shiny god for his work on the Future Titles... but why? They had such a unique feel and experience all to themselves, but the moment T.J. showed up instead of being a universe where things are made in a quick rush out of scrap metal it's this high fantasy sci-fi bog-standard experience.... Gah

    The characterization of Clank really stuck out to me in this game. He's just so nothing. In the old games he was the calm negotiator who occasionally mad bad puns and had an adorable little laugh who also pointed out how strange the side characters are. Here he does none of that, not even the laugh, like the writers just forgot about him. Ratchet getting changed to generic kid doesn't bother me as much because it doesn't feel like as much of change since he progressively got nicer as the games went, so him getting retconned from young asshole kid to young idealist makes some sense.

    +Zane Seibert I dunno, I remember everyone shitting on Ratchet's character in the first game when it came out but I though he just got progressively blander as the writers attempted to 'fix' that problem in later games. The first game worked pretty well dramatically, like SBH says the back and forth between Ratchet and Clank was pretty good and they both go through a lot of growth throughout the game. Its a real shame about Clank, he was my favorite part of the PS2 games, a lot more calm, collected and intelligent than most videogame characters with a sense of mischievousness about him. He had some subtle but effective writing. I remember one of my favorite parts in the series is when Ratchet accidentally offends an unexpectedly sensitive biker to the point of tears, and Clank has to sweet talk the guy back around to their side.

  • @zaneseibert

    @zaneseibert

    8 жыл бұрын

    malleableconcrete Ratchet's problem as a whole is that he didn't get much character development after the first game with the exception of Crack in Time. After the first game the series became more plot focused while R&C1 balanced the plot and character focus. He became a static character but I don't think that was a bad thing necessarily. He was less whiny and more heroic which made him less interesting but more effective as the main character as the series went on. His personal tale was over so the later games went for goofy space adventure with legitimately threatening villains to bring the drama.

    +Zane Seibert I found Ratchet to be a slightly less enjoyable version of what he is in later games. In the first game, he's much more reluctant, but afterwards kinda becomes extremely pro-active. Albeit I guess after you've successfully turned into a badass once, it becomes easier every time. But in the later games, he never lost his personality otherwise, which has vanished here.

In the new one we see Quark turn "bad" so it doesn't hit when Ratchet and Clank see it cause we've already seen it.

    As usual, you hit the nail on the head. The least enjoyable part of this game is the incredibly disjointed narrative. I knew what the issue was as soon as I saw the first movie clip worm it's way into the game. Other than that, I was blown away by not only the gorgeous look of this game, but just how fun the gameplay is after all these years.

The 1st game is really enjoyable to play and it makes you feel relaxed, especially the 1st level of the game. :) Jak 2 was frustrating and nearly made me brake my controler. Jak 3 is somwhere between Jak 1 and 2, but I enjoy Jak 3 more, then Jak 2. :/

    I've always been a huge fan of the games ever since I first discovered the series in 2003. I enjoyed the characters, the combat, the level design, the music, just everything. Sure, the first game hasn't aged the best compared to it's latter games but it's still nice to replay when you're feeling nostalgic. While I did enjoy the remake, I have to admit that there were a few nitpicks I had with it like how the amount of levels were cut from the original and the overall conflict between Ratchet & Clank. Ratchet was a straight up ass in the first game but I like to think of it as character development once he learned that the world doesn't revolve around and in turn, he becomes a friendly and mature hero. I don't mind Ratchet's personality in the remake but I still feel there needed to be some kind of conflict. Perhaps Clank could've got angry with him for lying about how he knew the Galactic Rangers and Ratchet would have to try to earn his trust. Hey? At least that would've given some conflict without making the characters unlikable. But other than that, the game remake was solid and it definitely was cool seeing all the past levels remade in upscale, next-gen graphics. Now the movie. Okay, I understand that a lot of people didn't like it. Me personally, I would rate it a 5 or 6 out of 10 because as forced as it was, I enjoyed watching Ratchet & Clank on the big screen. It was the first time in years I actually went to see a movie on opening day and I don't regret it. I mean here's the thing, I always wanted to see Ratchet & Clank on the big screen, it's just a shame that they tied it to the games. Had the movie been something different and unrelated to the game while retaining it's original writer, it would've been a lot better, I know it. It kinda makes me nervous for the Sly Cooper movie but hopefully, it's not tied to a game and I'm sure it'll be good. At least they kept the original voice actors in tact though I'm curious who's going to voice Carmelita lol. All on all, I'm glad Insomniac Games took a risk with the remake game. It could've included a few more nostalgic pieces from the original game but for the most part, it was still a great game and worth the money in my opinion. A game like this was definitely needed in the sea of first-person shooters. Yeah, we still have Mario but that's Nintendo. When it comes to Sony, there's just been an influx of FPS after FPS. Ratchet & Clank is a nice reminded that just because it isn't trending, doesn't mean people won't like it.

  • @Adderkleet

    6:40 - honestly, the writing in the first one is what made me not care enough to beat a certain boss. The one most annoying part was where Clank warns they're walking into a trap (think it's the first boss, with the Captain Hero guy) and immediately after the fight Ratchet complains to Clank that he shouldn't have let them walk into a trap. I think the writing is important, even though the combat's fun, because games like Jax & Daxter had both (well, once you get to the second game, at least).

  • @DolanDuking

    Huh... guess I remembered it wrong. Ratchet had it clued out - immediately knew they were going to be killed as soon as they fell down. Then Ratchet goes on a vendetta against Quark rather than listening to Clank at all. Every cut-scene after that blooper, I wanted to stop playing. The gameplay was good, but the story was just... ugh.

  • @StuffAboutSandwiches

    @StuffAboutSandwiches

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Adderkleet I agree about the writing of the first Ratchet and Clank. Too much forced conflict between the two protagonists. The later Ratchet games get better in both the writing and the gameplay, so I can't really complain. As for Jak and Daxter... meh. The first game was fun, but I don't think Jak II hasn't aged well at all, both in the writing and the gameplay. The story was just a mess of cliches, the characters were all either bland or annoying, and most of the humor felt really forced and awkward. The open world structure made the plot feel very disconnected, so nothing in the story had any real emotional impact, and the ending was extremely anticlimactic. As for the gameplay, the platforming is super stiff and the shooting doesn't feel very satisfying. The level design is also much more frustrating than fun, and the game relies too much on checkpoint starvation to create cheap difficulty. Speaking as someone who played through both the Jak and Ratchet trilogies recently, I personally think Ratchet blows Jak out of the water in pretty much every way.

    Thankyou for being one of the few reviewers who gives a crap about the music, pointing out the stylistic change in music with the remake. The problem lies in that Insomniac made the choice to go this route as early as A Crack in Time, two or three games before this, and the composer David Bergaud (who everyone knows for the electronic funky mash of styles) his last game was Quest for Booty. So even if it's something that kinda breaks the nostalgia factor, it would be illogical for Insomniac to bring back David for just one reboot and perhaps have a different composer for the movie, especially if it's something that most people don't care about. But we care, damnit. I was looking forward to having some new material for DJ sets.

    Despite the technological marvel that is the remake's graphics. Comparing it to previous Ratchet games around the time of the PS3 clearly shows ironically that deep down this was more of a "Deadline game." While a lot of time was spend on the graphical power, the animations were send to the wayside which even games on the PS3 spend a lot of time crafting. This particular franchise was actually claimed to be "Like playing a Pixar film" when it first took its steps into a high definition with Tools of Destruction, so it's rather odd that one of their biggest trademarks, animation, which they have done above the standard even back on the Spyro series just not be there fully. Other clues on this having a way shorter development time due to having to come out alongside the movie can be seen all around it. Less planets than the original, many weapons recycled from one or two games back and very few being brand-new or actual remakes of the original weaponry and the higher encounters of glitches (although still on the low) compared to previous titles.. Even the movie itself was heavily revised from it's original state. ironically enough, the advantage Rainmaker and Sony admitted when the film was announced was that thanks to having usable models for testing and animatic already made by insomniac, meant the process of making the film would save both time and money...and in the end ended up getting delayed anyways due to script revisions; A script originally written by franchsie writter TJ Fixman but later changed and edited by film's director Kevin Munroe and others. Fixman himself admitting very few of his version remained in the movie itself.

    Nobody ever talks about the great new game + mode called challenge mode in this game. This is were the gameplay really shines. You build up a bolt multiplayer by killing enemies and not getting hit. And because all enemy projectiles are actually projectiles and not hitscan this turns the game almost into a bullethell shooter in some parts. Clever weapon usage and evasion skills necessary. Great fun. The mode also turns this 10 hour game into a 16 hour game.

One video a week certainly isn't necessary. Your MGS look-backs are among the best I've seen, and I'd like more of that, even if that means just one vid a month or whatever. Love you man, you have brightened up my day many a time, this is just some random fellow giving feedback. I'll always keep watching you, whatever you do; I really love your point of view on things. PEACE!

    Aaaah, thanks for not being convinced (like one of my friends) that this remake is a good game 'cause it looks good and is the remake of R&C 1 which is a great, great game. Personally I think that the first 3 games have still things to offer to me (like speedrun), so I'll continue playing them, 'cause I love them (especially R&C 2) :)

    I have spoken at length with the producer of the movie (he very nearly did the Metroid movie in 2005 with John Woo) and he was very proud how the game and movie complimented each other. He, Sony and Insomniac were very keen on kids seeing the movie and then getting to continue and expand the adventure by playing the game and vice versa. Whether that succeeded or not is a different matter, but I would expect them to do something similar with Sly Raccoon.

    ***** I'm playing all the first games in each trilogy first, then I'll do each seconds and thirds. So far, I've played Jak 1 and am nearing the end of Ratchet 1. And, boy, Jak 1 really kind of kicked my ass, lol. That game was a lot more difficult than I was anticipating. Compared to Ratchet 1, which I'm just breezing through. I don't know if Jak 1 is actually a hard game, or if I was just bad at it for whatever reason, lol. I'm leaning towards Ratchet at the moment, just because I'm getting less frustrated.

    I find it sad that the grenade weapon doesn't upgrade into a nuke style explosion. I think the mushroom cloud effect for the upgrade was introduced in Going Commando but it's a touch I really missed in the R&C remake.

    2 things I gotta say about this game: 1) There are 7 planets from the original game which didn't make it to this game, a game 14 years ago has more content than a game in this day and age. 2) The game was advertised to have new planets, which it didn't... (planetizer is really just a remake of Drek's Fleet)

  • @voltrainer

    @voltrainer

    +ykrivaa the thing is some of the planets from the old game didnt even need to be there. and the deplanetizer replaces dreks fleet and the original version of quartu, as well as the gemlik orbital station. where the new quartu is entirely new level wise. and there was a whole new area on gaspar. after the reworking of the story and gameplay, some places were just useless. Gemlik wouldnt have made sense anymore. where the planet with the old srgt was removed, the srgt was replaced with von ion, and i guess deemed the planet pointless. although it was a nice location in the original. where the original may have a few more planets, some of them get reworked into one location, and others redone entirely. would it have been nice to have a few more planets? most defintely, i was left wanting more and went and bought every game in the franchise. i could even explain certain reasoning behind not having certain areas at all. but the movie in this respect does in fact cause damage to a game that still ended up amazing. If the movie didnt have the reworked story, we may have had more content, but the 2 hour difference it really adds on a first run doesnt change how well the game is doing. I just hope we get more ratchet and clank games of this quality down the line.

    VoltaireSurge The only problem I really have though is that the game description does in fact say "new planets", obviously there weren't any new planets. Also some planets which aren't in this game could've actually made some sense, Orxon (Drek's home planet), Hoven (which had the planetbuster maximus, also where you got the hydropack) hell even Umbris could've fit with the story as a planet where Ratchet trained to be a galactic ranger, and oltanis could've been added like Pokitaru in some way....

  • @voltrainer

    @voltrainer

    +ykrivaa hmm you got me on the new planet thing I guess. hoven was rendered useless when clank had started with the hydro pack and the raritanium being a bit more plentiful, the weather was just put on Batalia. sooo all the use for hoven is gone. with umbris, there were no real items you got there aside from the suprised qwark betrayal and the snagglebeast, both moved to slightly better points for the story, the snagglebeast in the nebula space lab, and then have qwarks betrayal seem almost surprising, putting it in the deplanitizer. plus it made him seem more self preserving instead of just being money interested. orxon was an alright level, but there were already alittle too many factory levels as it were so they just mixed orxon and quartu. I don't even remember oltanis. yes technically the old game had more levels, but those levels had the, you are forced to only be clank, or you have to be ratchet only a huge portion of it. but in alot of senses some levels were just rendered useless, or were just filler to begin with. so it's a more, trip the fat, and improve everything that's left.

    Finally someone that feels the same way I do. I'm not mad that movie exists, but I just fear that it took away hours of content from the game. We could've gotten more classic or new levels and more character development.

    I think people are a bit too harsh on the continuity considering how the game is good just on the merits of its gameplay. But I bought the original trilogy remaster in this week's sale just to find out what the original dialogue was like. The hoverboard races are much easier if you turn the game speed down using the unlockable settings, then just master the shortcuts, spamming tricks to use boost frequently. The more traditional cheats (infinite ammo, health) are a fun modifier, but by that point in the game you should have so much power that you don't need them, which means they're used more for fun and ease than for cheating. I only used them for my third playthrough where I had to spam the groovitron on everything ever.
