Metal Gear Solid for the original PlayStation was a massive hit in Spain. Not only the game had tons of dialogue, but was perfectly voiced in Castilian Spanish. Very few games would receive that treatment.

@@grahamwade5932 it meant a generation of kids who still didn't know English could play the title without reading tons of text. After that, knowing English became a skill gamers needed to develop or they'd simply skip the plot of any game and go by instinct.

Unless this is a joke I don't get.

As someone from Spain and having played UnEpic and the demo of this game, I can confirm that it's one of those cases where the humor isn't going to translate completely from one language to another. For example, the point about F-bombs in the dialogue, the use of profanity in regular conversations and media is way more casual between spanish speakers than for english ones.

thing is, no matter the land where u are from, if oyu tryhard ur humour with f-bombs or other swears in overdosis in a game that may not be even 10 hours long, then yes, stop it. It will grind on people, same when u have too many references and too little content and qualities of your own to present to make it worthwhile playing/watching. MGS1 does do that very minimally, with less in your face type of references or humour. It knows when to shut and when to quack.

About the spanish dub for MGS. It was mindblowing listening to videogames speak your own language, not even my accent (im from south america not spain) I think that is why MGS got so imprinted in my memory, alongside Soul Reaver's dub, this was something else, our language works with the "poetic" writing that both these games have. I mean, it was the FIRST time in my life that I heard a character say MIERDA in a videogame. Eh? MEA PARECIDO OIR ALGO....

Man, now I kinda wanna listen to Spanish Soul Reaver. Mind you I only ever took a few courses in Spanish back in my teen years and I would so not get it, but I still remember the Soul Reaver story and voice acting blowing my mind back then, so I kinda just... want to hear it just to get the MOOD it creates, if that makes sense? Just hear what it sounds like when it's not Simon Templeman and Michael Bell rocking my ears, so to speak.

I never played a metal gear solid game and I absolutely loved Unmetal. Also the bomb defusal even with the instruction from the game was obtuse. Please don't tell me you actually did the night vision maze without the instructions, I would imagine that to be devastating. I would agree the last few chapters loss focus on the comedy and focuses more on straight gameplay and standard cutscenes with few jokes sprinkled in, but at least ended it on a high note with it's epilogue scenes. It's rare for games to be so well written and funny when it's there and not be cringe or too referential. This allowed people like me to enjoy it. I guess the getting spotted and it's basically over didn't bother me as much as I treated it like a one hit kill style game, but the stealth depth is lacking in the after getting spotted portions for sure.

I ended up skipping several cutscenes in the final parts of the game due to joke fatigue. For humor in games, I would recommend West of Loathing. It is obviously not a stealth action game but well worth your time.

West of Loathing is pretty great, it's a single player spinoff to an ancient MMO called Kingdom of Loathing. However a lot of humor is referential.

That was legitimately the smoothest, most reasonable sponsor transition I've seen - you usually get suggestions for courses that happen to be on topic, but having the conclusion of the video directly feed into the sponsor segment is just... not something I've ever seen done? So, good job on that one.

I've only played mgs 5 and didn't even finish it. I went complitelly blind and had such a blast playing this game. I punched a window, someone told me to stop. I didn't. He beat me up for it. I punched some boxes and they asked me why the f I punch boxes. I sniffed the chloroform just to see if something funny's gonna happen and it DOES! And the cheese one... The bosses are creative (especially the last one), the narration is very good (no spoilers but it kinda splits and that was such a wtf moment) and of course the jokes are awesome. The only negative thing I can say is that after 3/5 of the game it became a bit boring for some time but then everything returned to normal. I've played it for around 25 hours and can recommend it to anyone. The gameplay was intuitive enough for someone who know nothing about MG 1 or 2. (sorry for bad english if there's any)

Yes!!! This is such a George game, I'm glad he covered it. A shame the gameplay could be better. This has me wondering what an MGS2-like parody game would be like? I loved the gameplay in that one.

You can dissect comedy, however you'll have so many people arguing your point that it's not even worth it. Better just say why you don't like it and move on.

Having played UnMetal for three hours, on easy, I will say that I have enjoyed myself a bit, and chuckled, and laughed, a bit, but I do remember Merry Gear Solid, and especially the second one, to having me laugh a lot more. It's much more referential to Metal Gear Solid, than UnMetal, though.

Came to the comments to see if anyone mentioned UnEpic, the only game I stopped playing entirely because of the "jokes." The unfunny edgelord thing is not pleasant at the best of times, but pushing uphill into the weird racism was just too much after a while.

But you're not supposed to 'trial and error' the wire cutting puzzle, there's a document in that very level that tells you how to defuse it.

Requiring the player goes back and helps shot enemies is a brilliant idea. Not only is it a unique gameplay twist that complicates using lethal weapons, it sells the player character's compassion through gameplay alone. I want to make a stealth game just to steal that idea

When you mentioned the laughing and crying mask juggling my brain heard Wes Johnson as Sheogorath yelling "boring!". Though I suppose that wild suited demi-god might be the other side of extremes.

Unmetal feels like if Vash from Trigun and s Solid Snake had a baby.

I'm gonna complain about the final negatives of this game, because not being a Metal Gear fan (having never even played the original 2 games) i still enjoyed this game purely on the merits of its writing and gameplay, namely figuring out how to take down enemies stealthily to earn stars, Which is the intended way to play the game, i think. And if you intend to do that - you will never alert anyone, or reload if you did. Thankfully game is more than generous with the amount of quicksaves it gives (at least if you explore around) - i think i ended up with 4 or 5 of them by the final level.

I don't know if I should feel proud or extremely ashamed that I knew that you were gonna say Eat Lead Matt Hazard as an example.

Oh... I didn't realize this was from the guy who made UnEpic. I was kinda excited, but now not so much. UnEpic is kinda fun, but the humor grates on my nerves so much. I imagine I'd feel the same way with UnMetal.

to me the best part that feels like a metal gear game was the omega building with all thos cameras , you have to put everyone to sleep while replacing them so the camera would see mike standing guard there. Sadly my favorite boss was the submarine: -small room to run away -limited ammo -hard to hit with the rocket launcher. -the ground starts to fall after some time. 10/10 & god

This is literally the closest we will get to a remaster of the MSX games.

It's strange because everybody knows about MGS, but almost nobody cares about the originals. I guess it got so grounded in the MG games being 3D that makes games like these a hard sell.

The only game from this dev I've played so far is Mini Ghost (last week, after which I wishlisted his other games) and that was mechanics first, story barely there, so no clue of how well or not he can write comedy. That said I'd be curious to see if the Spanish version is better than the English translation, that would require me to play the game twice tho and I haven't even bought it yet.

I played it both in English and Spanish circa 2003. Now, first of all I have to say I'm not exactly unbiased (I'm from Spain, so you can imagine), but even then, I have to say I preferred the Spanish dub to the English dub. Not that I thought the English version was bad by any means, but even when compared to the English dub of MGS2, I thought the English dub of MGS1 felt like some of the actors were a bit lacking in experience (something that obviously improved as the series went on. I noticed a HUGE jump from MGS1 and MGS2 already). On the other hand, the Spanish dub had much more experienced actors, most of which had been active since at least the late 80s. Now, again, not an unbiased opinion. But still.

Ah, unepic_fran. Unquestionably talented game designer who desperately needs a competent editor/writer on his team. Soft spot for 'im and I do love the original Metal Gears, but seeing the cutscenes in the UnMetal trailer I thought "don't think I have the patience for this".

I love Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake, I played it for the first Time 2 Years ago and I felt in love with it. Unmetal looks really nice.

I don't think this game is particularly un-approachable. If you've ever enjoyed a Sierra-style point and click adventure, then you'll get what this game is going for and overlook the trial and error game over states. The only difference is that you're moving with a controller and there's a light stealth element. The only puzzle I don't like is the room with all the dogs. But I also have to agree with the use of profanity. It very rarely has the comedic effect that I felt the joke was going for. And I also immediately pegged it as a translation issue when I found out the game wasn't written in English. Still, the game got me several times. I thought most jokes were a hit rather than a miss.

Looking back at classic spoofs like Airplane!, Hot Shots, Naked Gun, and most Mel Brooks movies, profanity was rarely used. Even in Blazing Saddles, outside the obvious. I grew up on those movies and I find profanity and yelling to be a very lazy attempt at comedy. Swearing loudly doesn't make shit any funnier, it just shows that you aren't funny.
