Raspberry Pi 5 - Testing Gamecube, Wii, Saturn and Arcade games

Ойындар

I got me a Raspberry Pi 5 and I was so fed up of seeing the Big-Tubers expecting us to swoon over examples of what is already possible on the Pi4 that I took matters into my own hands.
I'm just trying this thing out, raw. I installed the Bookworm 64bit OS and installed RetroPie on top of it. Then I was able to compile lr-dolphin, lr-beetle-saturn and lr-mame (0.260).
I've done no overclocking, and I haven't tinkered with any settings (except for a few controls), so these tests are of a more-or-less vanilla system.
My friends asked me to test a bunch of games on different systems to see how the Pi 5 fared and... it wasn't bad.
(btw - I know I said HotD2 at 14:49 and 17:57, instead of HotD1. whoops!)
Here are the chapters so you can skip ahead to whatever you want to see.

Hey Widge. Just watched this video. I'm genuinely impressed with what you've created. Your insights on the Pi 5 (at the beginning of its lifetime) are spot-on. Right now, I don't see a compelling reason to switch to the newer single board computer - your content keeps me well informed and satisfied with my current setup, shown on my channel. Great job!

Thank you, that's very kind of you. I haven't used my Pi5 much myself, just did a burst of early testing then left it alone for a while. I've recently set it up again since I just got an M2 attachment to use an SSD card, so I might do some more Pi5 videos soon.

Well done bud. GameCube was definitely a mixed bag. It’s probably the video driver or some video / driver setting like you said since it’s more a game compatibility thing with FMV on Rogue Squadron for example, rather than an emulator thing. Good to see Saturn running full speed though, that’s good news. Wii ran great as well, Links training looked great, I also hope it’s not mouse controlled, we need absolute 💪 HOTD3 looked amazing at beginning with cut scenes and gameplay wasn’t bad. HOTD OC not good but hopeful. Good news is there’s a common link, it’s the same emulator - dolphin, so with optimized should work fine. TC2 is a let down, I agree OC will probably not make it work. 😂 I’m hoping to see CarnEvil and Killer Instinct at full speed. To close. One thing to consider is that even though optimizations have been made, the current version of the Sinden software still utilizes a chunk of the cpu and may have an effect on how some of the Lightgun games perform since the tests were with a mouse so follow up video needed 😁 Good job though, loved it!

I'm waiting to see if there are any revision boards, either improved specs or more suppoted os. If I could use an app like ventoy, and have multiple live boot linux images to try on a single flash drive, then install if desired, that would be great. I understand it's a hobby board, and not designes specifically for emulation.

What's funny about Killer Instinct Arcade Version and the difficulty of emulating it is, ppl think the faster the cpu/GPU the more likely you can play it. When actually it's cuz the processors are too fast. I used to run KI flawlessy on Mame back in like 2001 on a P2 with 4 gigs of some sort of slow ass ram. Then tried to emulate it later in life with a pc 1000x faster and it was impossible. I do know the Pi5 can emulate it but don't spend the money on a pi5 if your just trying to build a KI machine. You can get a cpu for like 9$ that can run it

The emulators and drivers are clearly not optimised for the Pi5 yet. I have one and for most tasks it's at least double the speed of the Pi4. I assume you had the heatsink and cooling fan installed, as all the Pi5s need active cooling otherwise they throttle in a couple of minutes.

I don't have much experience of PC-based emulation, I've only really done emulation on the Raspberry Pi so I'm not qualified to judge between the two, but I might be able to offer some helpful insight at least. The raspberry Pi is really a low cost solution and its limitations are quite easy to find. Once the Pi5 emulation development reaches its plateau you'll see quite clearly where the line is drawn in terms of what you can emulate, and every Pi5 user will have the same capability and limits as you, so there will likely be a large community of support to draw info and experience from. If money is no object then a high-spec modern PC will outperform the PI5 hands down and you will have access to a much larger library of games, but the overall setup will be more varied and complex, and largely unique to your individual system. There are communities of support available, but at the end of the day, nobody will have exactly the same system as you, so any advice comes with the caveat "your mileage may vary". One of the things I love about the Pi is its small form factor and portability, a PC may not be as easy to transport, but for an arcade build I imagine it's not going to be travelling much so probably not a concern. Also, if there's a particular game you want to play and it's not possible o the Pi, then that's your decision made right there. if you only want to play classics that the Pi supports and don't expect a need to expand to newer territory then the Pi might be enough. I hope that's helpful.

I got my Pi 5 the other week. I definitely feel we'll get better emulation on these games once emulators and RetroPie are adapted for it. It's still early days. I have a Pi 3 and skipped the Pi 4 and definitely couldn't even begin to get a game like Wind Waker running on that

The capability jump from Pi3 to Pi4 was pretty huge I think. So far the step from 4 to 5 doesn't seem to be quite there yet, but I'm hopeful that with future optimisations that will change and we'll see better performance on those newer systems before long.

Thank you. I have a video of Star Wars Trilogy on Model 3 kzread.info/dash/bejne/fWetw9mte8q6lsY.html which runs really well. Since I made it I've found that some more demanding M3 games do have slowdown though. The only M2 game I've tried so far was Rail Chase 2 (using lr-mame 0.260), and it ran at about 35-40% speed. I also did a quick test of Naomi 2 and it runs ok but not great - I need to do some more testing, but my suspicion is that it might not run quite well enough consistently to be a great experience. I'll try to do a video on those if I get time and opportunity.

Although 1 thing I’m wondering, I’d love to see how the same game on different consoles work 🤔 like if house of the undead 2 also struggles on sega or arcade or if that would be a good worn around. Similar with time crisis.

  • @widge

I made a mistake in this video and referred to HotD1 as Hotd2... repeatedly 🤣 If you are referring to the actual HotD2, then the arcade version is identical to the Dreamcast one, they even run in the same emulator. The only difference being that the console version has extra game modes. As for HotD1, I'm unable to get the arcade version running as yet, as the Model 2 arcade system is hard to emulate. Time Crisis Arcade runs as you've seen here but is a bit slower than it should be, so the PS1 version is still the best option so far, but the arcade resolution is much better.

An well I was just referring to how badly house of the dead 2-3 ran on Wii, if you would get better performance on GameCube or arcade or ps1 with the Pi5 🤔 or if it also has the same issue and it’s just the way the game might be coded.

I am 80% done with an arcade cabinet build. I started out of the gate with plans to use PC, using Launchbox, since I didn't think the Pi 4 was powerful enough. After struggling with the extreme configuration required to get things right with PC emulation and Launchbox, I am going to pivot to using Pi now. So I am anxiously awaiting Retropie to support the new 5. Plus its a real PITA to do all the cooling/wiring, and power on difficulties you have with PC, that you dont with a Pi.

The Pi4 was an incredible leap over the Pi3, and I agree that, so far, the 5 isn't ahead as much as the 4. I hope that things improve as the software becomes optimised, but there's certainly no need to rush out and get a 5 just yet. Good luck with the PC, I hope it goes well. A Mini PC would certainly be more capable than any Pi, but the magic of the Pi has always been in it's low price-point. At the end of the day, it boils down to a choice on where you want to be on the cost:capability scale. If you want to emulate more modern systems and have the means to pay for it, then a PC is going to be where it's at. :)

I am sorry but you have to stop talking about Hz. The entire point of an emulator is that its scales the timelines involved for rendering, it operates with fractional timeslots where any form of Hz is just "when old displays used to refresh themselves and invoke an interrupt", not a fact (vbl interrupt is mostly turned off and is optional on modern emulators even). This fractional timeline is the same technique used in animations and trasitions on iPhone and Android, called "tweening". Where you basically define a goal (e.g 60 fps), then divide by the time it takes to draw a frame. It then spits out when the next frame will occur, dropping frames between. So please, for the love of god, stop talking about Hz when it comes to emulation. There is no Hz involved, just a fractional timeline. Also, did you change the buffering and rebuild from source? The code you are using is optimized for RPI4 in all likelyhood, and thus wont make use of the extra cashing, how it can layout code for JIT'ing and much, much more. These emulators will run just fine once the codebase has been given some work.

Thanks for your comments @CypherDiaz. I appreciate your input. Hertz is a unit measurement of frequency in events per second, or how frequent a thing is relative to a second, or how many times a thing happens each second. That unit could be anything. In this case the unit is a frame drawn and is still widely used (and correctly so) to describe (among many things) framerate, which is a video animation frequency determined by the number of frames drawn per second. So I don't agree that the word is being used incorrectly in this context, but thank you for your explanation nonetheless. I'm happy to learn new things and I found your information to be very interesting. In some of the cases here we see some examples of games that are expecting to draw a certain amount of frames each second, and as they are unable to meet the expectation, they are drawing as many as they can and this results in apparently slower video. Some emulators can and do drop frames if they're unable to to keep up with the demand, and when that happens the outcome to the end user would be video that appears to run at the correct speed but is less smooth, flicky even. As what we see in some of the examples here is slower animation, rather than less smooth animation at the correct speed, then frame-dropping is either not happening or is ineffective. I'm sure you know more about it than I do, so I won't go on. I made this video almost 3 months ago and I'm sure I said that this was the out-of-the-box experience you could expect at that time with no tweaking/modifying, or something like that. So no, I didn't fork any repositories and alter the code to optimise the experience, that wasn't the purpose of the video. I have done a little of that behind the scenes in my spare time though, but I'm far from an expert so I won't be making any videos about such things unless I'm very confident about it. And if that were the case, then I'd be submitting Pull Requests to the relevant repos first. Since that time, some great progress has been made to the Pi5 experience and I'm looking forward to what else is to come as those more capable and knowledgeable than I am continue to develop their work further.

If I sit down to play a video game I don't want to have to sit through 20 minutes (or more) of unskippable text until Nintendo gives me permission to have the interactive experience I was quite reasonably expecting. This has historically been a common fault of Nintendo's and is is one of many reasons why I'm not a fan of theirs. That said, however, I do love the GameBoy. But that's about as far as I'd go.
