K&TG’s first 8 albums are amazing with the combination of funk and jazz!!!! Not saying they didn’t have great music in the JT Taylor led era. But the 1969-1976 era of K&TG does it for me!!!!

Their change in direction came as the times changed. I was a kid in 1980 so I only knew Kool & the Gang 2.0 (the JT era) until I recently saw their history on their own YT channel, and I can see how they grew both in talent & in age. Sadly only 2 members of the original gang are still with us today (Kool & George).

K&G (version 2.0) went on a different direction and were successful at it too. I was too young for 1.0 (1969) but became a teenager when K&G 2.0 had barely just started (1980) and I had no idea of their previous history. Just like many other 70s artists, K&G too had to change with the times, and they were great at it as well. The 1970s and 1980s were great decades of music, still missed by us all alive back then.
One of their best all-time cuts. Simply vintage Kool and the Gang here.

The classic lineup of Kool & The Gang, was the best version of the group.
One of the hidden forces behind K&TG was Producer Gene Redd Jr whose father was a big band leader and arranger from the jazz era. This funk was raw, uncut, and hardcore to the bone with sophistication and polish (a rare combination that predated E,W,&F)

One of the rare times a band played live on Soul Train. When I was in a band we did that song but the Black Heat version. Wow half the band is pass but they were the band besides the Ohio Players that us youngum tried to be like.
This is the real deal Kool & the Gang nothing against the pop R&B stuff that was made by them in the late 70s and early 80s but these dudes were serious funkateers with an obvious heavy Jazz influence. Their horns could compete with Earth Wind & Fire I don't care what anybody says.👌🏽
Claydes “Charles” Smith is one of the greatest guitarist in the world!
Kool and the Gang was originally from Jersey City, NJ.
When Khalis passed, it was just a matter of time for DeeTee - they were thick as thieves.
Back then in the 70 there were many local band that was form but never made it to the big top and can play well, lots of unknown talent. Those were the days when you were a member of your local high school band and you were in your band room and form an impromptu jam session imitating these artists. Those days are long gone whereas the school have taken the arts out of the school system.

What's interesting now is those several albums in between Love and Understanding & Ladies Night of them hurling ideas are fascinating, (check A Place In Space & Everybody's Dancing, etc.) they weren't called Scientist of Sound for nothing, even though they weren't big sellers but still fun to listen to their musical travels of Jazz (1969-1974), Jazz/Funk (1974-1976), Jazz/Funk/Disco (1976-1978), then Disco/Pop (1979-1986), it tells the story of a band who changed with times to survive.

"...guided by Jewish influence in production and management..." this is totally FALSE! They were managed and produced, early in their career by Gene Redd( a Black musician, bandleader and founder of De-Lite records.) They hit pop music status when they began working with a BRAZILIAN musician/producer Eumir Deodato, in 1979. Chill with the falsehoods. This is how legacies are slowly erased,by manipulating the narrative.
