I believe anyone who grew up in the late 50s, 60s, and 70s was blessed to experience extraordinary growth pains and pleasures of change in the US and the world. The 80s and 90s tried to hold on but we can clearly see how creativity, love for what, and who you feel is your own. The music, art, love, and respect are taking a downturn. Many of us had hope for progress and a better world just over the horizon. These days when we see another brother or sister who shared those years with us, we nod, say something accepting, and acknowledging with respect. I often feel sorry for these newer generations. They just don't know!

I enjoy every version of this song, but most especially this rendition, because of the arrangement, plus every musician here, brings 100% + of their talent, and their love of music. There’s nothing like old school smooth music, especially when played live. The horns on the intro done it for me!! Then, the way the band changed it up and flowed right into summer madness. Look at all those instruments being played. Live music is where its at. I like how bands put the spotlight on every solo musician.Real music dont die!!Gotta RESPECT and APPRECIATE REAL MUSIC!!!!! Parts of this song has been sampled in soooooooo many song from artist such as Ice Cube, DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince. Again REAL MUSIC DONT DIE!!!!!!!! MUCH LOVE TO THE OLD SCHOOL!!!! 70s baby right here....... One love to the ones who respect the ESSENCE of music!!!!

No recording devices allowed! Back in the day, We saw Kool and the Gang so many times! They use to play Symphony Hall in Newark NJ, like they owned the joint! The Horns would come out on the stage dancing and playing at the same time! They had on these multi colored outfits that were full length! They used “Sunn” equipment, amps and PA! They played a version of “Stop Look Listen” and the keyboard man “Ricky West” took a solo and at the end of the solo he stood up and walked away from his Fender Rhodes and synth … but the keys kept playing! I said “oh shoot”! ….I wasn’t allowed to curse back then….not even now! I said how do they do that! This was back when I was in the 9th grade (1971) and tech wasn’t nearly what it is today! We, my brother, Bobby Wise and I paid $5 apiece for the concert. We were up in the balcony but trust me, there isn’t a bad seat in the house at Symphony Hall Newark NJ! Black Ivory and Everyday People were on the bill as well! They all were great, and Kool and the Gang were 9 years away from adding JT! ( he probably was a youngster himself at that point) . (I haven’t even mentioned seeing them at the Terrace Ballroom!) They had their protégées The KG’s on that gig! (Everybody’s uptight trying to get their money right, food prices sky high people don’t wanna buy, people striking everywhere trying to get an equal share, everybody’s uptight trying to get their money right)! I wish I’d had a tape recorder to record the gig! I saw them there again with Graham Central Station and Blue Magic! The saxophone player did a circular breathing thing where he held a note so long that it seemed impossible, but it can be accomplished through learning that breathing technique! A 440 is what he said! What a great show! Blue Magic - Welcome to the club, now you see how sad it feels to be - and Graham - Can ya handle it?! I wish I’d had a tape recorder! I saw different artists at the PNC Arts Center and they must’ve had recording devices there because on the way out they were offering DVD’s of the concert that I had just seen! The Concert was Tina Turner if I’m not mistaken, or it could have been James Taylor! Nut bush Tenn - 25 was the speed limit, motorcycle not allowed in it - and of course - It use to be her town, it use to be her town too. What an amazing world we live in, where in the time it takes you to walk out of a concert, you can purchase a DVD of that concert! Technology is upon us and it is just getting more and more advanced with every passing moment! I talked to one gentleman who even spoke of the possibility of connecting a port to a human being and being able to see everything that was on someone’s mind! Wow! Imagine that in a court of law. You ask a defendant a question and immediately the person has to think of what you asked - sort of like asking not to think of pink elephants - a little too much info would tend too suggest a little too much involvement! I assume guilt or innocence would be a lot easier to establish! Well isn’t every living thing a recording device? A bird, a dog or a fish? Think of it, a dog remembers where his bowl is. A bird remembers where the nest was built! They record and remember things too! Hey, what if there was a way to connect a port to these animals? The person in the woods, all alone, wouldn’t be so alone any more. He’d have an eye witness to what occurred in the woods. The bird, the bear, the deer even! The eternal questions could finally be answered - “Does a bear s**t in the woods” ? - “If a tree falls in the woods and there is no one there, does it make a sound”? You’d simply round up a few animals from that region, hook up the USB port and download! Hey, just wait till Forensic Science catches up with this! Think of it, so many questions answered! I sometimes, being the insomniac that I am, travel down memory lane just for the fun of it…or maybe because of my religious beliefs I am keeping the old memory banks in shape for when I stand before the Almighty! I wouldn’t want to waste His time hymming and hawing! My objective would be to get through those pearly gates! The Lord works in mysterious ways! A little birdie told me that! I’ll be here all week! Youngblood

I always loved the intro. Hearing it three times was like a birthday present. This song is one of if not thee greatest jazz innovation in history. There was nothing even close before or after it. On this version, someone lost sight of the Kool aspect. The original players were so cool, they wore shades and never smiled or sweated. The whole vibe was the definition of Kool.

Soul definitely has a lot of parallels to jazz with the use of strings and horns and overall laid back feel. The only difference really is Soul uses a more palatable time signature while Jazz goes from one to the other.

Brush with greatness. I met "Kool"! He was standing in front of a theatre ( I think it was Elizabeth Ave) in a white suit early in their recording career. He said when asked "I am Kool"! Funky George was sitting just inside the theatre in Newark NJ on a counter. I asked him if he was going to school? His reply, "no, the band is a full time thing"! The show was great, They used Sunn equipment back then. At the end of one of the songs in the show George broke a stick, grabbed another stick and continued to end the song! I was totally impressed! This all was way before Celebration was even thought of. We, "Spontaneous Generation" use to emulate them and our trumpet player "Fred Curry" was the nephew of "Cladys Smith"! Keep up the good work and keep on keeping on! R. Youngblood
