You have the right to essentially charge the bank a bill for your savings account, but the money is no longer yours as soon as you deposit it. The bank can loan it out, spend it, invest it, etc. that's why banks fail when people rush them and withdraw all their cash.

Jokes aside, Lego is eminently collectible because of how hard it is for them to retool their production for set-specific pieces, so many times it's just one production run and done . Not to mention that shields especially were in a lot of very old sets when purchasing and keeping sets unopened wasn't really a thing, and they are some of the easiest pieces for kids to lose. But also just imagine how much pu$$y that collection would get you.

Update: The Burning Flames Team Captain (7,600 keys) now is no longer the most expensive item in TF2, with that title now going to the Darkblaze Antlers with a sale of 9,600 keys in the form of 3 Golden Frying Pans valued at 3,200 keys each. The Darkblaze Antlers are the only one of the effect on that hat in existence, with it most likely being that way forever. The Antlers are all class as well as have a limited time Halloween event effect, and to top it all off is a Misc. Meaning that it doesn’t take up the “Hat” region that something like a Team Captain would and can be worn with items like it instead making the Antlers even MORE expensive as a result. I honestly don’t think that an item will sell for more than this one here, for a VERY long time going to show how significant this purchase is.

Holy shit I was just thinking about this yesterday. Thank you. This video is a gold mine of things that don't have copyright and can legally be replicated, but still have immense value in being the authentic original. That makes this a great case study for monetising original creations in a world without copyright.

Uh, "don't have copyright" is not quite true there. In fact, alot of the stuff mentioned is protected intellectual property and has massive governments and corporations that would gladly destroy little people if something they did risked the value of the property. You're on the right path though. You can replicate just about anything, you just can't mass produce it and sell it -or- misrepresent what it is (such as creating fraudulent "fake" versions and representing them as the original - no matter how well made). It's far more detailed that you would realize. Copyright/IP needs some fixing, but it's an essential part of a creator's power and ability to profit from their often difficult and hard to measure work. The problem arises, as most things do, when an organizational structure with a "fluid" concept of property is able to be equally represented in legal terms to an individual - basically giving massive corporations and governments the ability to just steal and control things as they please. Fight to remove the idea that a corporation has legal protection and rights as if they were individuals - both culturally and legally. Remember, individuals have rights - organizations do not. Observe this and anyone will see one of the core root issues with modern property right laws; when a fluid and massive corporate structure can act as if they were a person in the eyes of the law, you have a board of "directors" and "shareholders" acting in unison with all of the monetary power and collective skill against anyone who is standing as an individual.

My grandfather collected baseball cards as a kid. He took it very seriously and had a huge collection. After opening them, he'd keep them protected in a laminated binder so all his cards were mint condition. Some time in the early 60's when he moved out, his mother threw away his baseball card binder clearing out the attic, and inside that binder? There was a pristine MLB rookie season Babe Ruth trading card that apparently goes for around a million dollars. Sometimes I remember that and I seethe.

He's behind much of the iconic art in the rest of the game too. Brainstorm, Lightning Bolt, even the original mana symbols themselves were his. He was a beloved architect of much of mtg's history, and will be missed dearly.

Wish I had found this video sooner. During the summer of 2020 I went through a really dark patch and felt absolutely miserable. As a fan of Transformers I started to make a hobby out of collecting them and over the years I have amassed arguably hundreds of them. Some may make fun of me but I get great happiness from it and I'm still collecting to this very day. This video is terrific not just because of its welath of info but it's Ok into the psychological factor of collecting.

I know I’m late to the party but I love you putting “We are Happy Landfill” in here at the start of the memorabilia section. I never would’ve thought to put that as a background but it really rocks here!

Here's the thing, I actually opened a flames team captain when I was a teenager. Immediately people added me bidding and I sold for $200 USD. Hated myself for a long time for that one. I've since come to terms with it.

Some of the magic cards I've lost, traded away, or had stolen are now worth thousands. I started playing in 1996 when I was 6 years old, I cringe at the memory of owning power 9 (the most valuable cards in the game, black lotus is one of them) and touching them with sticky juice fingers and lending them to friends for their commom cards cause they have a cool picture of a knight on them. You're right though, you move on.

There was an official rubber band that was used during some Nintendo event that sold for more money than a rubber band should sell for. So it's safe to say that, yes it will probably appreciate. Augustus Caesar returned to Rome after defeating Mark Antony. Upon his return, a man in the street showed him a Raven that shouted "Hail Caesar, Victor Imperator." Augustus bought the bird, which had no real function, from the man for 5,000 denarii. I've binged your videos a hundred times but this last round I decided to comment. I've commented on a lot of your posts because they're in themselves artwork. If I had the money I would purchase your videos because they're amazingly informative while being entertaining and relatable in an unreal way. The way you break down culture to its abysmal state has me questioning everything. As a fairly serious collector of various antiques and collectibles (who has been collecting for decades), great video! I see some confusion in the comments, value of a collectible (like anything) all comes down to supply AND demand. Something can be rare/one of a kind but be worth very little because there is not much demand for it (for instance, a piece of art I made in high school). Alternatively, Something can have high demand but have high enough supply that the demand is reached and is thus not worth much (such as water).

now i want to collect despite never having cared about collecting anything in my entire life

What I find most interesting about the value of rare items is that it doesn't matter *IF* it's rare, it's that the item only holds value if many people both know of it *and* want it yet can't have it. Like, I could create some random stone carving and it would be absolutely unique in every way, both the composition of the stone, the carving itself, etc... Yet it would never appreciate value because a) no one knows of it, and b) no one wants it.

When I was like 13 I unboxed a Flaming Hot Rod, as my first ever crate I've ever opened. Some guy who was probably twenty seen me get it. He eventually convinced me to trade with him for probably like $30 worth of things. Ever since I had realized my mistake my thirst for rare skins has been unquenched.

This wasn’t the TF2 video I expected Emp to make, but I’m not complaining. This is still great.

9:18 -- I saw a pair of the ruby slippers at the smithsonian over a decade ago. I know there are a few pairs so I wonder if they still have a pair in the museum or if that was the pair that was sold.

really nicely put together video, i expected to kinda get bored, but lets say i was pleasantly surprised, it had a good level of detail about each item and its allocated genre or collecting if you will, and it wasnt too long wasnt too short, and i like the little psychology class towards the end XD (personal interest as i love trying to understand how the brain works.

Hearing "we are happy landfill" in an emp vid is so surreal. Its a personal favorite and way under appreciated. Great taste Mr lemon sir.

This channel's evolution is amazing.

I remember having 4 additional steam accounts (so 5 total) to idle in TF2 each week. Then I'd craft the weapon drops into metal and trade them for keys. I managed to unbox 3 unusals in my time with TF2, and I got a lot of games back then from trading. Good times.

there wasnt "a" General Lee car, they had like 40 of them. Most of them were wrecked beyond repair after the iconic jumps they did.

that’s…how every collector’s item works? Things are only ever produced in limited quantities, digital or otherwise, and the entire point of NFTs (however stupid) is that anything can be a collector’s item if you only make 1 of it.

Actually yes. Although outdated now, one of the most expensive baseball cards of the 90's was the 1989 Ken Griffey Jr Rookie card from a fledgling company named Upper Deck. It was printed as card #1 in Upper Deck's first full run of cards in 1989, before Griffey Jr even took the field in the MLB. This card was touted as an almost guaranteed get rich quick investment. If you could pull UD's 1989 #1 you were going to make your money back, 10-100x in just a few years. Added upgrades in quality in card stock, packaging and photo resolution, Upper Deck created a monster that changed the industry. The problem? Even though it was highly coveted in the collectable industry, it wasn't really all that scarce. A whopping 90k KG Jr 89 Upper Deck rookies have been graded, over double the next most valuable card from that set, the Randy Johnson rookie. The card was estimated to be printed 1 million times in its first run alone, and was reprinted when the second half of the set was printed later that year. Additionally it was involved in 2 runs of the complete set boxes printed. Its also rumored that 500 count boxes were being shopped around at trade shows, purely to bank on the fact that the general public believed this highly coveted card would be rare and increase in value over the years. It is very likely that the 1989 Upper Deck KG Jr Rookie card was the most printed card by Upper Deck that year.

I don't know much about anything in this video, except cars. The most expensive car trade was the Ferrari 250gto, but the car that is most likely the most valuable in the world, is the Mercedes Uhlenhaut coupe. It was the 300 SL of Mercedes racing director Uhlenhaupt, in which he swapped the inline eight Mercedes F1 engine of the time. It was the fastest car in the world and arguably the most beautiful too. Only two where ever made and only one remains at the Mercedes Benz museum in Stuttgart Germany.

What an amazing video, Emp never fails to entertain. The most valuable rare item in the vid, imo at least, is the coins minted by Brutus after Caesar's assassination 13:47 that is absolutely sick! Even though I despised the Roman Senate, what a crazy item that would be to own. If I was stupid rich, that'd be definitely something I'd like to get, or maybe a different Roman coin. Anyone else see something so rare but actually wanted?

Also for most nft sites, when you purchase the nft you're not purchasing the copyright, just the right to say "I paid for this", so the original artist could still copyright strike you if you decided to use it in marketing

What's more valuable, an original Picasso or a JPEG of a Picasso? The original, obviously. It has value because you know Picasso himself painted on that very canvas. That is essentially what an NFT is. It uses encrypted code and is stored on a blockchain much like a Bitcoin is, only an NFT is not currency. Its code allows someone to verify that the NFT is, in fact, the original piece of digital art, and thus it holds value. NFTs also don't have to be 2D images. They can be 3D models. Imagine a CS:GO where all of the skins were NFTs made by users. They would hold stories of their own much like rare stamps. A rare skin once used by an eSports player would have much more value despite being identical to the other skins that look exactly like it. Hopefully that explains things a little better.

@@aespair NFTs are like a signature for a digital asset, usually a picture, but is also an asset that could be traded. The valuable thing about NFTs is not because it's the original content of the artist but instead more for collection or an investment. Picasso is a well renowned artist from history, there is internal value to the art, and preserving items through history is expensive, considering wars and other conflicts that could've destroyed them; you can't compare NFTs and other digital assets to historical pieces of art or antiquities, .

yeah, like, with tf2 hats/csgo guns, you actually *own* the hats/guns. you cant just equip a 661 case hardened AK or burning team captain whenever you want. its virtually tangible. nfts are literal jpegs. you can make a case for everything else in this video being worthwhile, but not this.
