RARE HISTORIC Shotokan Karate Vid - Isao Obata (et al), Keio University 1974 Kata/Bunkai (Part 1/2)

[Note: You may use any portion of this video for non-commercial purposes, but we ask that you include the following text: "Video courtesy of NAKF.net. The original is here: • RARE HISTORIC Shotokan... " Contact us in the case of commercial use. Thank you.]
This is a very rare video prepared for the 50th Anniversary of the Keio University Karate Club's founding (placing it around 1974 - two years before Mr. Obata's passing) by the club's alumni association.
Isao Obata was a direct student of Shotokan founder Gichin Funakoshi and a founder of the Japan Karate Association (JKA).
Master Obata was Master Kazumi Tabata's teacher. This film was found among Master Tabata's personal effects after his passing.
[Special thanks to Stuart Chassen for the video, and to the original video makers who had the foresight to create what would become a document of historic importance.]
This is Part 1 of 2. The second part contains kobudo and several advanced kata. Here is the link to Part 2: • RARE HISTORIC Shotokan...
The performances are (Kata Name/Performer/Graduating Class):

These Kata have the look of something much older akin to pre WWII and a hint of the ShotoKai styling or even KenKoJuku.

This is why I started Shotokan in 84. Systematic Structure and movement. You add the freedom of Kung Fu to the Static Power of Shotokan. You create a Whip like Ball and Chin of Steel.

When i now started karate my sensi engraved these thoughts into us: "A fight should end as soon as possible. " "One hit, one technique or one opportunity is all you got in a life and death situation." "We train so we intend to live." "Our intentions, defend yourself as effective as possible." "Karate was not meant for show man ship or showing off. Its a way of life. The weapons are our body, the hands, the feet, the head, the fingers, the toes, the shoulders are for offensive use and defence purposes. We train to be mentally sound, physically fit and ready to respond to our present situations that may deem a danger to our wellbeing."

To Shoto Juku: I thought the same, some of the moves and rhythms appears very similar to the (old) Kenkojuku style. Nice to see this old footage and be able to have a connection with these practitioners... almost knowing what they were feeling at the moment....

Actually, while they were proficient in their era, and masters in their own rights, Karate has changed and advanced. Consider, sports science, nutrition, general health and wellness among the masses is better. Think football, do we play better now than 50 years ago? Of course we do. Body structures are different, and technique is scientifically applied. The same can be said for Karate. And no, I am not saying Karate is purely a sport.

Hi; a punch to a plane or point or mae geri of an older Karate Master like Higaonna Sensei; Sadaharu Sensei; Kiyohide Sensei; Taira Sensei; and many older and newer than they is in my opinion stronger and "lethal" for self defense than a cardiovascular trained sport guy. Karate is completely diluted in 75% of the cases right now

Most people here are afraid of evolution. And don t know history of karate… Funakoshi, Gigo, nakayama and other made evolution… like Itosu before them. And for a Hundred years we ear the same : that a not true karate, that s not tradition!😂 If one would be good at self defense, i suggest train shotgun

Baloney. 70 % of the moves in those classic katas involve grappling. Beginners only see kick, 'block', punch. Look harder. Note there are wrist locks, arms bars, throws, holds, stomps, chokes, and gouges.
