Rare 1950s Geest Banana Truck - First drive after 30+ years

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Geest industrial auto-truck first drive after 30+ years.
I bought this truck last year and it had been stored in the back of a barn for at least 30 years.
Originally they were used to transport produce around markets and factories. This one was made by geest bananas with a Villiers MK25 engine.
this video shows what I did to get it up and running again.

    Something you don't see today is Geest Bananas, I remember unloading Geest trucks that delivered fruit and veg to the supermarket chain I started work in in 1970. Was just thinking the other day about the Geest brand.

    Built in Boston, Lincolnshire by Geest Trucks, part of the Mechanical Handling Division of Geest Industries Limited. They also manufactured trolleys and barrows which by 1961 had over one hundred and fifty different catalogued models. The banana division was a seperate entity based at Spalding with countrywide import and distribution depots.

    I believe too that lister wrougting was connected to. I remember working at the plant on some special forklift trucks... They also made small train locos for the coal industry... using the lister engine.... basic, but a brilliant work horse... Great days with fond memories...

    And to think I was at school when this machine was working every day. No weather cover for outdoor labourers then, usually just a Hessian sack thrown over the shoulders to keep some of the rain off,and very long working days. Good to see this one running again.

    it sure starts easy after you cleaned the points and tuned it up,,,that's quite a neat gadget. it would be handy if they had put a guard over that starter cup to keep someone from getting caught by it.

    Great fun them autotrucks used to use them in the RN dockyards (similar design but a bit bigger and powered by Lister diesel engines) we used to try to get them up on 2 wheels and drive round slalom courses we laid out.

    I’m not sure why people think these truck were used in the banana factorys lol If you read the history on geest there truck and sack barrow devision was a by product of there seed importing days later they seen there was market in selling them to anyone and everyone. The tractor tread front tyre is actually a agricultural spec optional extra according to the sales brochure

    Why is the spark plug not attached and the unit is running?

  • @MatthewHenson.

    @MatthewHenson.

    6 ай бұрын

    Hello, the spark plug is attached, but as can be seen at 6:29 there is another object in the head. I haven't investigated what it is yet, but I think it may be some sort of decompress or an emergency stop. But I'm not too sure.

    I assume there is no reverse gear, & reverse is achieved only through steering?

  • @MatthewHenson.

    @MatthewHenson.

    7 ай бұрын

    Hello, there is a reverse gear on the gearbox and 3 forward gears. But yes, as the turntable can swivel through 360 degrees it can be useful to use that functionality.

    From what I have heard the geest trucks were first released in about 1952. As for bonser trucks I'm not too sure but from a quick search I would say that the bonser was released earlier.
