this song was written for his dad when he had kidney disease and james and his sisters weren't a match to give him what he needed, so they thought they were losing him, but a distant cousin of theirs matched.. meaning he had the needed surgery and recovered james label wanted to edit the song to make it sound "better" but james refused because he wanted to show the emotion of the song and yes that is his dad in the video.. and fun fact his dad was the only person not crying on the video shoot and was like "why's everyone crying? i'm not dead yet!"

Yep that was his Dad in the video. And his dad was actually dying at that point of Stage 4 kidney disease.. James and his sister unfortunately wasn't a match to donate a kidney and his dad already donated one his kidneys so it wasn't really looking good for his dad.. This song was released and a distant cousin saw the video. Got in contact with the Blunt family. Started talking and got tested to see if the cousin was a match. And he was! He tested positive and because of this video his dad is now well and alive. Such an amazing story... Also *The Girl that never was* by James Blunt is a good one. Maybe not as sad but not far from it.

He wrote the song when his dad was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney disease. Fortunately his dad had a kidney transplant and survived. I could say things like this to my mom. She played the part of mom and dad ❤❤❤

I lost a baby girl at 18 weeks almost 24yrs ago and when I heard James song everything came rushing to the front and I absolutely sobbed.

This song actually brings a tear to my eye. Its relatable to my mother because anyone who knows me knows what shes going thru. She took care of me growing up and im here returning the favor. My father isnt doing all that great too. Its amazing how im considered the POS of the family yet im the ONLY one taking care of my parents. How much you want to make a bet the family will come out of the woodwork when they go just for money?

Both James and his Father were Army Officers in the British Military. At one time in their careers, they were both being deployed and it was difficult for them to say goodbye. James' father came up with the saying, "I'm not your father, you're not my son, we're just two grown men saying goodbye". James turned it around and used it in the song.

Not cancer but stage 4 kidney disease. He had previously donated a kidney himself and so was in effect dying but since this video was made a distant cousin came forward to be tested and was able to donate a kidney. As far as I know James's dad is still alive and well.

Not sure where u heard the song. But last year the amazing American Idol Winner Iam Tongi from Hawaii played guitar and sang this for his audition! Tears all around. His father had passed away 6weeks prior, and was the one that taught him to play guitar and sing his whole life and the guitar he was using was actually made by his dad! This song changed a lot of people's lives as people around the world signed up to the donor register and they chased the monsters away for his father and a lot of other people around the world. Also all the proceeds from this song were donated to the Help the Heroes charity of great Britain which helps take care of our veterans and their families as both Colonol Charles Blunt and Captain James Blunt were both part of our military. Legends. God bless . The song was first a poem written by one of his sisters and james saw the potential to it putting it to music so it was a beautiful tribute to him.

I found out about a month ago, my step mom has Alzheimer's, I know this isn't what James' song is about but it feels like it to me. I lost my Mama in 2008 (I was 29), and by the time my Granma passed in 2021 (I was 42) she didn't know who I was. The last time I saw her, she was telling me my Mama was sick 😢💔❤‍🩹.
