Definitely don't want to say that affected places deserved it, but they are partially responsible for such breaches. Collecting large amounts of personal data but not taking proper precautions to secure the data, segmenting it etc. Yes, I know a lot of places do not have budgets for such security practices but that's not an excuse. If you can't secure the data, maybe you should keep sensitive information offline. That creates pain for your staff when they need to access it but your convenience doesn't trump potential sensitive data leak. Maybe I am just jaded IT veteran that's seen a lot of this and tired of companies promising security but not deliver ever remotely close to what was promised.

The thing that is left out of most discussion in regards to ransomware is that these are Windows systems that are notorious for not only being insecure, but also out of date. Hospitals, Police stations, government offices, etc... shouldnt be using Windows, but a Linux to avoid these ransomware problems.

The system can be the most secure system in the world and it can still be compromised, if the people operating it are not schooled in system security. You need to school your employees regularly so tat they know the newest attack schemes and how to spot them. Also every system can and will be broken in. It is just a matter of time.

    1. Use Linux 2. Have offline backups It's not that hard. I have no empathy with large corporations being hit by ransomware and very limited empathy for smaller businesses. Ransomware is not obscure and having backups is as basic of knowledge as it gets when it comes to using computers in a business setting.

You are more or less spot on. People are stupid. They need to take responsibility for themselves and stop putting the costs and burdens onto others through violence and theft. Cause that is literally what the government does and what people do when they advocate for government be it state/city/country law enforcement, government schools, or some other government thing. There are better ways to deal with problems than through violence and theft (ie what government relies on).

Keep in mind that 99.9% of all crime happens with cash and real estate. Crypto currency is 100% traceable and the best part is that you can't delete a transaction like you would with paper at a gov agency. Crypto currency is far superior than cash and a threat to totalitarian governments and really any corruption happening with money.
