  • @AveSicarius

    @AveSicarius

    Yeah, and I think Cain would honestly clean out the division today, apart from Gane maybe who Caine isn't touching on the feet, but the division today is way weaker than when fighters like Cain, JDS, and Werdum were in their prime. Ngannou basically walked through it just by being bigger and stronger, pretty much all his opponent's just stood in front of him and traded punches for some reason apart from Lewis, Stipe in the first fight, and Gane. I think my favourite is probably Cro-Cop, because he's a high-kicking heavyweight, if we talk about non-UFC fights Fedor vs Randleman is amazing.

Fedor beat some big names in the mid-00s, but most of those guys wouldn’t survive against the current UFC roster. The vast majority of his record is padded with nobodies. I’m sure Fedor has his reasons for not fighting in the UFC, but fighting at Strikeforce, M-1 and Bellator just means he didn’t routinely have top competition for a long portion of his career.

    Nah, he's not going to touch Jon unfortunately. DC beat Stipe, and we all know how Jon matches up into Cormier. Jon is a superior grappler, is about the same size, and is better on the feet. I don't think Stipe beats Gane honestly, Gane is way better at striking and actually has some submission threat. Stipe's kind of done honestly, I don't see him taking the belt back, and if Francis ever comes back, or when Gane learns to wrestle, he's basically just going to be a gatekeeper. Heavyweight is just a really weak division right now, which is why Francis cleaned it out by just being big and strong, and why Stipe was so successful despite being average at best. If Gane learns how to wrestle, he's going to dominate it for years. At the moment Jon is going to beat any Heavyweight they throw at him, I'm fairly sure Jones would smash Ngannou as well.

There are several who I thought could have made it to a championship fight eventually, but I think they banked too hard on their durability and took dangerous risks for quick finishes because the gas tank would eventually come into question. Ranking HW like this really might be the hardest division, because you have guys like DC and Couture, who had some of their best work at 205 but were also successful at HW, do you rank them just as HW, or by their entire body of work? Then you have a significant amount of time where PRIDE had a better HW division than UFC, that matters when you're comparing UFC HW of that era to other eras, and on top of that, steroids, which is an issue in the entire sport, but let's be real, it's a more meaningful issue at HW than at any other division.

    Absolutely not, DC is ranked way too high. His win against Stipe was controversial. He was warned several times about eye pokes. His hook that knocked Stipe out was immediately after he poked Stipe in the eye, on the same side. He did the same thing in the two rematches. Stipe had a partial detached retina from it. Derrick Lewis had like 3 months between fights when he fought DC and he had a bad back, which was why he didn't really engage with Ngannou in that fight.

Cain came up at a time when the heavyweight division was stacked killers and made them look like they were no where near his league. He got screwed over not only by injuries but also some fights knocking out crazy contenders making him fight Bigfoot and JDS twice over 4 fights. His run up and everything included during such a deep division... I could see them being switched around. Daniel should have 3rd and Cain 2nd.
