I love when the promos go for “fierce”. Drag race is almost always doing hokey pokey jokey, and that’s alright, but sometimes I just wanna see the girls serve GLAM.

I'm sure someone has already mentioned it in the comments by now, but Season 7's promo was influenced by an at-the-time very influencial fashion photographer Terry Richardson. Terry was known for his extremely stripped back, candid photoshoots with harsh flash photography that felt kind of edgy and 'real' compared to the usually very high-production fashion shoots. In that sense, I understand completely why they chose to go this direction given it's the "fashion" season, but it kind of fell flat (even at the time of release). On top of that, Terry was also a fucking pervert and has had a lot of accusations of s*xual misconduct from people he worked with (particularly models) and has since been kind of ex-communicated from the fashion scene, so while I get why they made this choice, it still kind of sucks lol

I agree about it feeling more Terry Richardson and less Blurred Lines.

What makes all stars 6 a very special trailer for me was the fact that it was released during the later times of the pandemic. Those times were dark and depressing, and the trailer’s theme being about the sun and sunlight, the color palette being bright red and yellow really raised my spirits up after watching it. The Beginning as its soundtrack is really fitting song for a lot of people finding their footing again after going through the lockdowns. It just radiates hope and positivity.

omg. that was such an amazing way to describe AS6's trailer. I used to put AS3's trailer as the best AS promo trailer since I loved the whole vintage golden era/aesthetic meets chaotic vibe they went with, yet the way you described AS6's trailer perfectly defined the feelings I and probably others got when we see AS6's trailer, especially when it first came out. It radiated Hope and that there was Light at the end of the tunnel. I feel like AS6 for me has now the best AS trailer, even maybe higher than other normal seasons' trailers. Bravo

season 15 is first place for me; the promo pic is so good, the outfits are incredible and all coherent, the colours are visually appealing and give a y2k era feel, and the camera work of the video is just amazing. it's just eye candy

June Jambalaya: “Now things are getting spicy!” This is a reference to her drag name. Jambalaya = a highly seasoned, spicy dish.

I loved the season 7 promo, especially Katya saying "Im just here to steal stuff" ... but I could never understand why everyone was in black & white except for Ginger and Pearl

Some queens are sometimes forced to wear other things for the promo if production doesn’t like their outfit.

My one pet peeve with the season 6 promo was that magnolia rises out of a giant pot of milk instead of milk.

Will never be over Naomi making that amazing outfit in season 8 only for Ru to wear a replica for the promo the very next season 😂😂 I know Naomi was gagged

Season 12 was filmed mostly on sets. I remember some of the girls (specifically Jan) posting bts of the filming of the promo in front of patriotic colored sets

i think one thing that made the season 15 promo so good was that it’s the only regular season where ru wasn’t in it. it really focused on the girls and their drag and let us learn who they are

I don't think All Stars 7 needed a promo tbh. We all know the winners and the excitement about the season finally happening, plus the publicity they did were more than enough to get people hyped. We also know what to expect from an all winners season - pure talent. So there was really no need for a promo in my opinion

There’s something about promos where producers want to make every queen look the best they ever can and it really shows how each queen is amazing in their own right. That preps the viewers to be ready to watch what happens when they compete against each other in their own gloriousness. All stars 7 would’ve given that chance to see them like that more compared to usual seasons imo.

@@Mysanthropiya ok but imagine how iconic it would be to each be sitting on their thrones, surrounded by memorabilia of their iconic moments in the show, and only standing up with the voice of RuPaul inviting them to a coliseum of the gods (a nod to the animated short) to battle it out for queen of all queens and that’s it. I would’ve died right there.

Great ranking! Just wanted to mention two fun tidbits: 1) the time they forgot to put Charlie's solo scene in the S9 promo - they did put out an edited version on the Logo website but I think the one on KZread is still the original we-forgot-Charlie edit 2) them getting David LaChapelle to do the promos for AS3 and *I think* S10 (?) definitely contributed to the awesome set design/cinematography for those promos

fun fact: Bianca´s pink dress was ripped from the back so thats why she is sitting throwing the pages, they gave her a latex dress so small, but fortunately she brought her only black gown to the shoot as backup. thats why the promo shoot its diferent as in the video (source: Bianca on a sibling rivalry episode)

I didn’t realize All Stars 7 didn’t have an oficial promo because of the heavy marketing and they were literally everywhere. It would have been nice to have one though. ❤

What i also love about the season 16 promo is the fact they gave Sugar and Spice a little moment to showcase how twins were gonna compete for the first time, like them pulling the trophy back and forth was such a serve

Season 9 drag race promo is my all time fave. I think season 9 in general is my favourite. It just felt different, fresh and unique. I totally love that era

For me, All Stars 4 promo was the Best. They had all the best silvery look contrasting with the background. and as you said the slow mo Ice pieces flying is a unique take.

I actually love the season 7 promo! Its very American Apparel inspired which was really popular back in 2014-2015. Maybe its just my nostalgia, but I just really like the vibes.

Girl when that season 2 promo dropped I remember being shock. Only cause I thought at the time drag race got cancelled and you couldn't watch the seasons or any promos for it as easily as you could now, season 1 to 6 promo's and photo shoots where legendary cause of how different drag race was back then. I can't explain what or why those seasons hold such a special place in my heart they just do.

i remember seeing "live", the season 9 promo and be so excited! Definitely my no 1, the choose of the colors and the outfits, omg... On point.

“Going back to my roots” is a song by Rupaul. I never even noticed that until you showed season 8. Which I think is prob my favorite promo.

Ive honestly never seen a single promo despite having seen every episode, lol time to go watch them!

For season 7, I initially thought it was meant to evoke a police line up. Granted, I think its more of a suggestiton in terms of the setup and it doesn't really deliver on that concept at all, but it gives more of that vibe when it's all of them together. I actually think a proper execution of this idea would be perfect for an upcoming season given how drag is being perceived in this hellscape that is our current political reality.

I mostly agree with your top 5, but some of those other placements are wild, like season 5 and All-stars 1 being that high. Also, I don't think season 7 is bad, the stripped down all white aesthetic was just pretty big in 2015, Rupaul's white ponytail is iconic, and Katya's one liner is easily my favorite part of any promo ever. I vividly remember bursting out laughing the first time I heard it back then.
