About the two filler episodes in the Rurouni Kenshin remake, they’re not actually filler episodes. They’re actually adapted from a prologue chapter in Kenshin Restoration, a remake manga made to promote the live action adaptation

About Rurouni Kenshin Remake : -They actually added alot of stuff that expanded the story while still being very faithful as an actual manga adaptation this time. ( Like the scene where Raijuta tried to kill people and chickened out, that's new not in the manga or the 90s anime) - Said fillers are not actually fillers, but a new Canon prologue that was in the Restoration manga (the manga made to promote the movies)

I also chimed in on the MAL Scott Pilgrim controversy, mainly after I discovered sites weren't adding Boku No Daemon for being too gray area, which I do accept since the production is largely Thai. My main gripe was as you pointed out that these sites essentially argue these aren't Japanese enough but yet have fully Chinese and Korean animations with no Japanese involvement whatsoever. One user pointed out that these sites don't necessarily claim those works from China/Korea are anime since they are differentiated by tags/categories and essentially website names become bit of a misnomer although the focus on the sites do remain on Japanese anime. The cultural influence argument seems to be a bit too abirtary also, since clearly the West has also had an influence on manga/anime, just look at the "God of manga", Tezuka, but I don't think Western animation is gonna be allowed any time soon. A mod on Anime-Planet confirmed it's not due to geographical proximity either, and their rules get increasingly confusing as they have a manga section too where they allow Thai and Indonesian comics, but yet they don't allow animations from these countries (I think that may be down to what individual teams on the site can manage)....So why these anime focussed websites collectively decided to allow specific territories other than Japan in the first place but not others remains as bit of a mystery to me 😅

I think the MAL rules are fine, but the folks who run MAL just need to adhere to them better. If G1 Transformers isn't allowed then other co-productions Reporter Blues, Ulysses 31, and Mighty Orbots really shouldn't be either. According to their rule about presuming Japanese creative staff are subordinate to the Western staff, they don't belong either. Keep it to just animation from Japan only, mostly just Japanese staff. Allowing Korean knock off films almost feels like a joke.

Have you watched the 2003 astro boy anime? It's one of the last shows to be cel-animated, and it's both gorgeous and *consistent*. Like, the character animation is detailed, and the show never drops in visual quality. It's just... *good*. Immediately good. The direction is also EXTREMELY strong, and it's faithful to tezuka's art in all the right ways. to quote my buddy, "I understand why capcom stopped caring about rockman now. they could never surpass this. This puts rockman in the fucking dirt."

Interesting video. Very fan of Cobra so I'm glad you like it (when the video on it comes out I also have to translate it into French). Another thing, as you were talking about Journey to the West, Leiji Matsumoto also worked on a very free SF adaptation before the existence of Dragon Ball, called Starzinger. I haven't seen it so I can't say what it's worth though.

1:06:00 It depends. While I agree Transformers and most other co-produced shows don't go on MAL, I think the anime flavor point can be subjective. Little Nemo definitely has none but has a MAL page, but if you really watch G1 it has some compared to American shows from the same time. And the Movie has no anime flavor? Come on now!! You must haven't seen it, that art style is 1000% 80s Bebow anime and it references other anime constantly! Anyways, some shows are co-produced with American and Japanese studios working on pre-production (directing, storyboard, character design, scripting etc) in addition to animation. A co-production like this being anime is up to how strict your definition is (so if Transformers doesn't count, other TMS collabs with USA and France don't either) Meanwhile some shows are just cartoons with outsourced animation, with all of production in one country, while Japan just handles the animation. So its a case by case basis thing. Some, like Transformers actually share creative roles between Japanese and non-Japanese staff while being intended for both audiences (begun airing in Japan in July 1985, had the accompanying serialized manga, made creative decisions specifically for Takara/Japanese kids prior to the shows release, several episodes aired there first, exclusive toylines, cataloged in Animage and other anime magazines, the G1 show and its anime sequels/OVAs all came out annually from Toei and kept a uniform animation style and continuity etc). Based on all that, the argument definitely exists for G1s inclusion, even if I don't agree with it completely either. Every Japan-only anime sequel undisputably belongs on MAL, however, and if they don't then no anime belongs on it lol. They have 0 American input and exist because Takara and Hasbro's plans for the show diverged. Other cartoons like Rankin Bass's Frosty, Thundercats/Silverhawks or DIC's Inspector Gadget, Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors, MASK or Batman TAS are almost entirely pre-produced in USA/France/Canada, are made almost exclusively for those audiences, and Japan receives all of their materials only for animation. This is just outsourcing and is definitely NOT anime. Otherwise great video and fully agree with you.

I feel that with Angelic Layer, there's a divide between anime-only and manga-reader viewers, especially with regard to Shuuko. In the manga, Shuuko has social anxiety that gets worse with people she cares about, and the whole wheelchair/MS/medical research plot doesn't exist, so a lot of manga readers felt that the anime's take was a big improvement as a reason why Shuuko would abandon Misaki.

I was going to mention that considering by the time I finished reading the manga, I was caught off guard by how the mom was acting. It's CLAMP charm/comedy but it *IS* odd that you leave your own daughter due to being comedically shy. There's way they could have used that angle and not make it awkward in a way that makes the character less sympathetic and come off as sort of....stupid. The anime version with her being sick and the battles being test runs for future technology felt a lot more interesting because it puts a lot more importance on the dolls themselves because it's no longer JUST about battles for money or fame but a working proof of concept to something bigger that can lead to life changing tech evolution with the added benefit of making it feel like it fits into the Chobits universe as well considered what was happening in THAT story.

The Wonderful World of Puss in Boots is one of my favorite films and I also happened to watch it this year (mostly because of the rabbit hole the more famous PiB threw me into early in the year). I really loved Pero as a character in particular, and the rest of the cast was honestly really cute, even if I wish they did more with them like the cat assassins. I doubt youll check out the other two films, but in the third film theres a wolf who goes by Professor Garigari, or Dr. Mysterioso in the English dub. He is a reused character who originates from 1965's anime Hustle Punch. If you like classic Hannah Barbara or Looney Toons and liked PiB, I think youll like Hustle Punch (even if only the first two episodes are translated/easily accessible). Moreover, Animal Treasure Island falls into a similar boat as PiB in that its a really cute film without a deep story thats worth checking out.

I tried watching the Godzilla anime and ran into the same issues as you considering how heavy handed and talky the series felt but I had a lot of people suggest this is like that because tye characters could possibly be autistic but YMMV on that since I haven't read anything that actually confirms that nor did it really help endear me to rhe characters because it still felt like ut was meandering around and trying to SOUND smart vs actually BEING smart. And as for the Sailor Moon stuff, part of the reason I couldn't get into it was how tightly it tried to translate the manga beat for beat vs the original series which had tons of filler but that filler benefited so many characters by letting them flesh out bits of themselves that wasn't in the manga. I love the manga and felt it translated a lot better than Crystal which sort of feels like it wants so bad to be the 'real' adaptation of the manga but came way too late in terms of impact from the 90s version but also sort of butchers the art style of the manga. The coloring style of Crystals comes off as way too slick and sometimes washed out and it doesn't capture the softer but warmer and beautiful blended coloring style of the manga which has a Copic marker/watercolor feel to it that whatever technique they're using for Crystal can't capture.

Alternative was super boring man which is something the original FLCL was not and Haruko didn't really need to be there either. I guess you can say it's less offensive than the other sequels (I thought Grunge was fine outside the visuals). If MAL thinks Gotham Knight is an anime than Scott Pilgrim is an anime because it's the exact same thing (written by Americans for a American audience but animated by Japanese studios) this is such a non-issue. Ironic that you thought the Dyna cast is more memorable and that people who remember the ones they fapped to when the most popular character in Dyna is Mujina specifically because of her character design. That segway after Kenshin 😂 Anyways my thoughts on the series after Watsuki scandal is that you always got to remember that people who made the most popular and moving art wind up being terrible people but that doesn't make you a bad person for enjoying and praising it so all this virtue signaling from the English community from an incident from 6 years ago that's already been settled feels unnecessary and ungeunine because it won't change people's perception of the series now. Overall the remake was fine I also have issues with the DEEN adaptation but I thought how it handled certain scenes made it more memorable compared to the remake just following the material 1:1 a perfect example is how Kenshin's farewell is handled in both versions.
