They basically did the opposite of the italian dub of Saint Seiya, where they took the localized title "Knights of the Zodiac" a bit too seriously and made the characters speak like medieval knights, with Seiya even quoting Dante. Wich added even more drama to a series that was already full of it.

Did the Italian translators have problems with Saint Seiya's script? Because here in Latin America, Saint Seiya was translated using the French dub script as a base for the first ten or so episodes and even when they switched to using the Japanese script there were a ton of mistranslations and inconsistencies, but the voice acting was so good that nobody complained

@@pablocasas5906 2 remarks: 1) in the Italian Dub, the constellation became the proper name of many of the characters. Seiya is NEVER called 'Seiya', but always 'Pegasus' which lead to some logical conundrum from episode 1 (when a character called Pegasus is fighting to become the knight of Pegasus). For years, it was taught that this depended on some mistranslation, but it was actually a choice imposed for marketing reasons: the Italian toy distributor thought that they would sell less action figures if they kept their original Japanese names. 2) More in general, yes, the end of the '80s were still a pioneer landscape and like for France there were incomplete scripts and non always proper translations. Hence, most of the integrations and poetic liberties. By the way, this hyper-sophisticated and literary adaptation was by no mean felt as ridiculuous: together with the wonderful music, they created an extra layer for the success of this anime in Italy where, despite non being broadcasted for 10 years on national tv (from 1990 to 2000 it was broadcasted only on regional tvs) was incredibly successful.

Well I'm french and I can say that I didn't except you to release a video on Hokuto no Ken french dub. Indeed this dub is a classic and just like with City Hunter (Nicky Larson) a lot of the lines from the dub became huge memes in France and people from every generations know about this dub and how bad it was. It's crazy that with such horrible dubs both the Hokuto no Ken and City Hunter franchises became huge success in France Great video !

I think most fans discovered how mature Hokuto no Ken was when they watched fansubs of the episodes that didn't aired in France and of course when the manga was published back in 1999 a few years after the anime

@kiyanshahab9460 French Kid at the time, I don't think I cared about the dialogues, I don't remember laughting as a kid (I did as a teenager though because some of the dialogues are golden) As a kid though the intensity of the action, of the music and all made me understand that it was a really serious anime and I would care very deeply for the characters.

Bad dubs in America kill the show. Bad dubs in France makes the show live long and prosper. "Times Like Eggs Are Hard" is probably my favorite line along with "He's Strange." Thanks for doing this video.

@Janeiro I Ghost Stories (Gakkou no Kaidan) is pretty boring and unremarkable in its original form. It's good enough that it got decent subtitles if you really want to experience the story. It's one of the few cases where the dub actually improves the anime.

It's true I remember Niki Larson because of the added humor they add to some characters. I still quote the guy that was pushed into a car and said "me pousse paaaas! mais il pouuuusse!" Lol

I was 14 when I first saw the French dub of Fist of the north star on Club Dorothée. I wasn't a big fan of the show (I was more fond of shows like Urusei Yatsura, City Hunter or Highschool Kimengumi). Back then I thought it was strange that the channel aired that rather over-the-top violent show embedded in a variety show for children. You could see the anouncer Dorothée firing up the audience for Hokuto no Ken, an audience constisting of hundreds of children age 7-10/11. It was bizarre. The french gag-dub was also highly critizised in french Anime Fanzines of the early nineties. It was only later that the dub became a cult classic.

Fist Of The North Star, Cutie Honey, and City Hunter, airing on a French children's variety show... Every week or so for the last ten years I've learned something new about the '80s that just proves to me it was the craziest decade of the 20th century.

I never realsied that FOTNS had a French dub, let alone a gag one. Holy crap this is fantastic!! "Flying Cross of the Phoenix Arizona Style!!" XD

Speaking of "not being desirable to foreign licensors," Toei themselves produced an English dub of the first TV episode in 1986 under the translated title "Ken, The Great Bear Fist", for potential foreign licensors to buy the series rights. No surviving copy is known to exist other than one belonging the son of someone who worked at Toei. In a blog on the Japanese site "livedoor" from 2006, the user "blauedonau" explained how he found the tape while rummaging through old belongings, managed to transfer it to a disc and watched some of the video before turning it off because he couldn't understand the dialogue. A screenshot of the opening's English title card was posted too, too. Chances of getting into contact with him are slim since his blog hasn't been active in foue years. Mike Toole has an English script from this lost pilot but chances of nudging him into scanning and posting its contents are also low.

As a kid, I thought Duel Masters' English dub was great. I think the real reason it failed in the US is that there was simply too much competition at the time, especially from both Yu-Gi-Oh and Magic the Gathering (which is ironic, as DM was created as a way to make MtG more like Yu-Gi-Oh).

Apparently what happened to Duel Masters was poaching of tournament players to make them into Magic players. That and people bouncing off the gag dub and the increasing joke-yness of the series in the west. Ironic because though it has it’s serious moments DM is VERY silly.

Hey french dude here, thanks a lot for bringing this gem of a dub in your videos, great as always But the statement in 6:27 is false, the remaining episodes were dub with a different cast for the dvd release, with none of the silliness Ogouz is known for HnK 2 on the other hand was never dubbed Also fun fact, Ogouz actually played Lupin in the Lupin the 3rd dub (renamed Edgar de la Cambriole for copyright issues) and loved playing the character

Even if the dub is the french equivalent of any 4Kids dubbed anime I will say that it has helped me and others in the reconstruction crowd. Thanks to how quickly AB got the anime to dub they actually got the tapes in a higher audio quality than what we have widely available.

I grew up with this show when it aired on the french channel "Manga" and I loved it. I thought the random silly jokes these huge musculer men added more charm to them I never thought it was as unatural as a 4kids dub Also the opening slaps

The video on the Toei Fushigi Comedy Series is still being worked on, I just grossly underestimated how much production history there would be surrounding 14 shows (I know, who would've thought). I'm still in the process of writing it with the script mostly being based on accounts from producer Toru Hirayama's book, the translations of which will be viewable to patrons after the video premieres.

There's more to this. The improvisational spirit would continue in French anime thanks to this, and even go on to Portugal, where a lot of the anime was adapted from French Versions, so for example the portuguese dub of Dragon Ball is infamous for absurd humor and changes to the translation improvised by the actors.

Its hard to say if the Portuguese dub of DBZ was directly inspired by Ken le Survivant, even though French localizations made their way into other regions, those dub would often borrow name changes but rarely full scripts or make direct references or acknowledgments to them. For example, Raoh's name was changed to Raoul for the French dub, this change was carried over to the Italian dub, however, I've been told that despite taking cues from the French localization, the Italian scripts are actually fairly accurate translations of the original Japanese. French dub of DBZ was also the origin of changing Mr. Satan's name to Hercule, however, the French dub of DBZ still didn't affect the American interpretation of the character. Likewise, I think the Portuguese dub of DBZ was most likely a matter of just being in the same situation as Ken and they came up with the same solution (great minds, plus anime was already being re-written for broadcast at that time, just needed an extra step to make it funny). Not ruling it out that Ken inspired Portuguese DBZ, but that's my take on it.

@@MercuryFalcon Oh I think the Ken dub definitely did NOT inspire the dubs in Portugal. I don't believe we even had Fist of the North Star dubbed, but it was pretty much the same situation minus the actors revolting against nazi elements! Thanks for the reply.

The most funny things are the attacks in french the sounds kuto is the same as the for the word knife ( couteau) so all the attacks are jokes with the word knife . Exemple like : he used the deadly butter knife attack or the kitchen knife school is unbeatable

As a french kid who lived during the Club Dorothée, I can say this video was very well documented. Also good of you to include the two best best jokes of this dub at 8:00 and 0:28. :)

@@HerrHick let me see if I can grab that episode but if I remember well, this is the scene when one of the petty villain got targeted by Ryuga, runs towards Kenshiro asking him for help to reverse the attack, with Kenshiro replying something “Inutile de chercher tes valises, la consigne de la gare est fermée”. The guy dies from the attack, Ken mumbles his “glacé a la vanille” quote and that primed the introduction of Ken to Ryuga with the quote I have mentioned.

I'm a sub guy but MAN I LOVE THIS DUB!!! This is basically what they did in the US with "Samurai Pizza Cats"

I grew up with Dorothée, that show was crazy ! They were live so many times a week, especially during holidays. They must have crunched so bad to make all those shows... As pointed out in the video, they are essentially the reason why manga are very popular in France. They clearly exposed us at a young age to that specific art, and most of us enjoyed it immensely (currently watching naruto with my son :D). I wasn't without some hiccups, and the buying animes in bulk generated some problems. City Hunter (nicky larson in french) suffered from a similar transfiguration when it aired in france with a lot of the "sexy stuff" being toned down (or outright removed) and a lot of dialogues becoming somewhat stupid to ease up on the fairly grimdark universe that city hunter is supposed to be in the first place. It's fair to say that you can view at this two ways : either you find it fun, and an entirely different show from the original one (because well... it kinda is), or it's outrageous that networks and publishers had that much control over an artist work. Arguably there is a point to be made about the original artist vision not being treated correctly. At the same time other artists (the dubbing people) made something entirely new out of it. To some extend this has led to better exposure to manga culture and an overall greater respect to original arts in the long run.

Philippe Ogouz was of Russian-Jewish descent and he was pretty much paranoid when it came to antisemitism and nazism, due to a pretty understandable trauma. In his mind, japanese animation as a whole endorsed nazi ideology and he would take any example he could find to make his point, no matter how far-fetched it was. Though a great voice actor, he was also known as an extremely unprofessional man and a pain in the butt for many of his colleagues. If you weren't in his papers, he would give you hell and he made several people quit voice acting because of how abusive and unsufferable he was. He gathered an entire clan around him during his career and he would harass the colleagues he didn't like, often for petty reasons.

Oh, so there was a particular block that did that bulk licencing thing, I had always heard that that was how the french wound up with stuff like Cutie honey and Fist of the north star, but this added alot more info to that situation!

Hrm...With regards to the supposed swastikas... were the original French TV broadcasts given clean videos, or were the characters for attack names and such still baked in? I could almost see the actors severely misinterpreting some kanji as swastika-esque, if they don't know what they're looking at...

Club Dorothee is the reason for age tv ratings in France as they didn’t know that animated shows could be for older audiences. This caused series like Dragon Ball to be moved to channels for older audiences around 97

I looked up this show on the french wikipedia. According to it, episode 35 was initially skipped for a long time and the french dub did eventually cover the remaining 18 episodes of series 1 and aired on ab cartoons' sucessor channel "mangas". The dub never covered the second series(episodes 110-152).

Correction: AB Cartoons is not a short lived channel. AB Cartoons is actually still airing in France, the channel just changed its name to "Mangas" in 1998. Mangas still airs anime to this day.

I have to add, the lousy dub was also applied to City Hunter (aka "Nicky Larson") on top of censored footage. For instance "Mokkori" became as "date as a vegeterian restaurant" when Ryo is asking payment from Saeko, or translating "bullets" into "boulettes" (think about paper-mache balls) to downplay the violence. Oh boy, it litterally ruins some critical scenes.

Talking about the French TV buying what they can without knowing what they’ve bought, I always remember the series , Très Cher Frère in french, at first it looks like a regular shōjo, I think the french TV bought it because it looked like Lady Oscar which was a big hit in France. But soon we can tell that it’s in fact a very dramatic Yuri “girls love” series! Obviously the french TV channel had no idea at the first place and if my memory is correct the french airing of the show was ended only by the sixth episode... the funny thing is, now there are cartoons about girls love for rather young audience such as She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, guess time has changed ^_^

I think I remember seeing the final fight dubbed in french (albeit by other actors and it was way more faithful to the original script, but it seeemed like an official dub that was done years after the first for the remaining undubbed episodes).

I'm french and i had never eared of the complains about nzi images, only the ones about violence. BTW it was awsome. Favorite censor in Us is no gun/laser gun in the Us and here is the Alcool who become "jus de pomme" (apple juice) like in Maison Ikkoku. What's your national censor tropes ?

Somehow a gag dub in another language doesn’t sound as gaggy when not in English.

As someone who watched a non gag dub of "Ghost Stories" (it even got dubbed on my home country language!) I can see that show is plenty memorable on its own. It was basically a sighly edgier scooby doo with a catch if nonsensical ED. The gag dub isn't bad at all, i find it extra funny because I enjoy the actual scripted version. I just wish English speaking people had access to both? Because both is better in this case.

No. Because that was actually well done and it was nothing like this. You'd have an easier time comparing this to the "Rock The Dragon" Saban version of Dragon Ball Z.

I'll never forget City Hunter and Hokuto Shin Ken in French, just like I'll never forget YU YU Hakusho in English.

Speaking of dub differences, you should review the American and British dubs of Wicked City. Apparently the American dub is more faithful but for me the British dub is more entertaining and the chemistry between characters is way better. It does raise the question whether a dub should be faithful if the end result delivers inferior entertainment.

Thats the case with a lot of Manga UK dubs, same goes for Goku Midnight Eye as well. I don't particularly find comparing dubs interesting especially since I mostly watch subs but that might be a cool idea for someone like cartooncipher.

The anime is still running in Japan. The current protagonist is even Shobus nephew, and Shobu himself returned in "Duel Masters: Versus revolution" as a, I'm not kidding here, parody of Raoh from Fist of the Northstar

Another reason to hate the French. Kidding aside, it's amazing that they even were able to have this air on TV. It's a shame that they(vocal talent) misunderstood the show so much. Ken isn't trying to achieve any sort of fascist or Nazi goal. He lets people live as they like and has no selfish aim, and no goal of accomplishing anything for himself. Saying he'll die with a nameless grave someday.

I never watched "Ken le Survivant", but I watched "Nicky Larson", and wow, it was bad, really bad, the dialogues made no sense, the censoreship was really weird, there is an episode full of love hotels, and they are called vegetarian restaurants, even though we can see naked women in gentleeman company. Then I learn it was a very bad adaptation of City Hunter, I watched CH and it was way better. What you said about AB production is true, the company is infamous in France for how cheap it was, even their live action shows used the same sets and actors, some scenes were even filmed on the studio parking lot. But aside from that, France has cultural protectionism, and Japanese animation was seen as a cultural invasion, hence why the CSA was so strongly opposed to them and would find any excuse to prevent diffusion or apply censorship. And finally, their was familial conservatism, especially with Ségolène Royal, who to this day still continue to try to ban mangas and animes for their violence and the bad image of women it gives. Nowadays she isn't taken seriously, considering all the blunders she did during her political career, but during the 90s, her anti-Japanese standing was strongly followed. My parents didn't want me to read mangas due to this, I had to hid to read them when friends would lend them to me. Ironically, this happened at a time when our President was very found of Japanese culture (even though he did some blunders himself, like detonating a nuke in Polynesia for Hiroshima anniversary in 1994...) Funny thing now, recently, a French movie name Nicky Larson was released. I didn't want to see it just because of the name. But it turned out to be a good movie quite faithful to City Hunter.

I am still confuse to who this show was for, it's too gory for young kids, but there is storyline that is really aimed at children. I would let a 14 years old watch this but not an 10 years old for sure.

I thought no one could do worse censorship than us italian or even US 😅

I still think the american Ghost stories dub might have been more controversial because it went in the opposite direction. Instead of going full PG they tried to make it offensive. But this thing is pretty funny too. Someone bring that architect here cause the blond dude is pissed

The French dubbed is a odd one also I wish that the show was dubbed in English. 😀👍

It has a few dubs they just aren't very good, the English dub covered the first 37 episodes, the movie was dubbed in English and there were 6 compilation films dubbed in English, all pretty accurate scripts but not acted very well.
