You should really use high temperature silicone grease on the slider pins as ordinary grease attacks the rubber deals. A good supply of brake cleaner to clean everything is also a good idea, do not use any oil based cleaners again to protect the rubber seals. The pads slide in stainless steel hardware, remove them and clean all rust off under where they sit and coat where the hardware sits with high temperature grease to reduce rust build up. Enjoy your Range Rover.

Working on your drive like that is gonna leave your lovely expensive brickwork with unsightly dark patches. You should put a stout cloth down, like an old bath towel to stop all the black oily and rusty gunge from engraining into the stone...

Thanks for the video. I couldn't see an axle stand and the scissors jack looked a bit puny. Given the state of the discs I wouldn't have waited for the discs (changing which represents most of the hard work). I would have wanted to do new pads and clean sliders straight away with some aggressive wire wheel action on the existing discs, which I would have left on - could see no wear ridge. A bit of heavy braking and the rear brakes would be much better than when you bought the car.

You need to think about reporting the mot test centre to dvsa. What if the brakes failed if you needed to stop in an emergency on the motorway and ended up killing someone. Remember that thing weighs over 2 tonnes!!!!!

You’re absolutely right. I should have already done it, and a few have urged me now... I’d never forgive myself if I knew I could have prevented someone else’s accident. I’ll see how to do it & do it now! 👍

I like your enthusiasm in trying to do the pads and discs as a lot of people wouldn't even bother. I would like to give you a bit of advice if I may having seen the video. I'm a fully qualified mechanic and I noticed that you left out a very important part of the procedure, which is alot of the time missed off by so called professionals too. You were right in cleaning up the pins to free them off to allow the pad carrier to slide backwards and forwards, but you forgot about the metal hardware that the pads sit on. These should always be removed and a new set put in, and also clean off the rust that has built up beneath them. The new pads will be really tight in the pad carrier, and eventually get siezed in to one position. Each pad will wear at different rates. The problem is called Rust Jacking. It will lift up the metal hardware and pinch the pad solid. You should not only brush the loose rust with a wire brush, but also use a metal file to get the rust flattened back to bare metal. Lubricate these areas and clean off the face of the piston. Lube the piston edge too. Did you clean off the oil that stops the discs from rusting whilst in the packaging? I follow a guy on KZread called Eric'o from South Main Auto in the US. He knows his stuff. If you want to see what I have said above put in to action, then watch his video. kzread.info/dash/bejne/i5yrwcaYdbrYf7Q.html Hope the advice helps you moving forward with the RR and other cars you do!!

Rothers555 Yeah the screw definitely went back in 👍 If you’ve got a CLK watch out for the handbrake cable clips snapping. The plastic clips deteriorate with age & the cable can hang & rub on the propshaft. It makes a whirring noise which increases with road speed.... don’t ask me how I know 😂👍

To be fair since the small brake shoes only act as a handbrake they last for years since they lose very material because they are exposed to very little friction. Would have been a good idea to adjust the shoes once the new discs were fitted though the small hole with the plastic plug. Good video mind

I'd be cautious about reporting the MOT centre, unless you've just bought the car, you'll be confessing to negligence too. Roadworthiness is primarily the operator's responsibility, the MOT is not a substitute for maintenance. Don't forget there are areas the MOT tester might not have access to, like those sills you were jacking under. Remove the sill trim and cut away the corrosion, then weld new plate in and waxoyl. Another reason to be cautious is the next customer might find themselves with thousands of pounds worth of unnecessary repairs as a result of them covering their own ass. The tester likely didn't check the pads if it passed the braking efficiency tests on a four wheel rolling road, don't forget on most cars the rear braking force is less than the front and as long as the rear calipers slide freely on their pins (L322 calipers seem to have better designed pins than the P38) one meaty pad will be able to exert a fair bit of force, presumably it was a little off balance, the only thing I wonder about was was it down to the metal and grinding on the day of the test? Pads last for years on a new disk, but I've seen a new pad wear down to the backplate in three months on a rough disk. I doubt a fume extractor, compressor and other garage noises would conceal a grinding disk on pad backplate.

That particular MOT was completed a matter of days prior to me purchasing the vehicle. It was most certainly a bent MOT or at the very least highly negligent. It’s a long time ago now & I rectified the brakes myself so I don’t think much about it. It will always happen at various times/places but the better prepared the buyer is then hopefully dangerous situations can be avoided.
