i dont have proof but i did hear that during the design of valdor there was an original sculpt which was a lot more plain but it got rejected multiple times, to which the sculpter took the piss not expecting it to be approved and then it was. i heard this in a pub in nottingham and i know they were ex gw employee's but ofcourse that doesnt mean its true, but i could believe it.

Thank you for that boost of confidence. I have an original Valdor (and Jenetia Krole) I have been putting off painting for ages. But I will do it one day! :D

The claws on the Terminators are very easy to trim off with a scalpel to just make fists, even easier than removing the chain from the banner. Also, I used the Sagittarum helmets (minus spike) for the Venatari. Hated the Venatari when I first saw pictures, but they grew on me, and by the time I finished painting them they became my favourite models in the range. (Also, I quite like the swords...)

My problem with the Shield Captain is that Im just kind of entirely convinced that you can make something better yourself using Warden parts?

Also yeah, fuck the Guardians for only having one cloth piece. The Captain with the cape looks so much better than the rest of the Squad. The wardens is what Custodes should look like (except for some of the poses, prefered the Guardians from a posing perspective). Why are the Guardians even?

You were thinking of Ixion Hale - amazing mini, it's a warhammer world exclusive, but obviously people sling em on eBay and the like.

@@WillHammer117 unless something's changed, you can rock up to Warhammer world at any point and get him, same as the command land raider and rhino set, and the Heresy chaos Libby who's accidentally summoned a Daemon etc.

Agreed, on some models having more real-28mm scaled weapons can really ADD to the models gravitas.

I get around the lack of cloaks on the Custodian Guard by just mixing and matching Guard and Warden bodies throughout the infantry squads. Since the Custodes have a very limited hierarchy with most Custodes being on the same level in terms of rank, instead of having separate squads of cloaked and uncloaked Custodes, every squad has a mix of cloaked and uncloaked men as if wearing a cloak or not is personal preference rather than a rank or squad-based thing, and each man is grouped into a squad based on equipped weapons only.

Someone in GW loved Final Fantasy 8. That's why the swords exist

As someone who had to replace every single one of my Suzerains' axes with something chonkier, I've had my fill of sleek, sexy, and broken resin weapons to be honest. Though stuff like the Blood Angels range probably overcompensate in the other direction.

If I collected Custodes, I'd be adding cloaks wherever I can. The base Auramite-armoured body looks so awkward and top-heavy, especially on the Sagittarum Guard, but when you do stick a cloak on, it fills out the silhouette and the proportions suddenly make sense. I wonder if they were designed to all have cloaks, but had to cut them from the standard dudes to make plastic casting easier. Agreed on Valdor 1000%. Every description and illustration of him before it came out went on about how he wasn't really any fancier than the average Custodes, and maybe even looked kinda spartan by their standards, but apparently management wanted him to stand out as much as possible. I get it, it's hard to add more detail without going overboard in a range where the average dude is already super-blinged out, but his mini goes a step past overboard IMO.

I have about 9 - 10K points and got a good laugh at the sword being a surfboard. It totally is. I too like the Sagittarum, but man, are they a pain in the butt to hold in place when gluing them. Regarding the Aquilon, I tend to not take the adrathic weapons as they have Gets Hot. Custodes die too easily already as the 6++ isn't great. The army is a bunch of artificer armor guys in the end Telemon rules make me sad. I have 3. Bang on for Valdor. I own him. He just looks like a mess. Like, is there a person inside that mess of armor, ropes, trophies, etc.?

Sword not ideal model wise. Very handy in games tho because means you can take the shield. Nobody puts the swords on for the swords.

The Gyrfalcon bikes have always held a second candle to the Dawneagle's imho. Also the Dawneagle's are FAR less fiddly and I'll happily use them as proxies for Gyrfalcons

For the custodes aircraft - their nacelles style read like an osprey or a firefly tilt engine design. That seems like the intent for a dropship.

Custodes are my proof that GW isn't manipulative and money hungry, but just inept. Their coolest, most unique and stand-out models are almost universally terrible: the grav carrier is possibly the worst transport in the game, the bikes are overpriced, the Telemon is complete shit, the terminators are almost unusable until you can take Valdor or a Tribune to take the teleportarium, and Sagittarum Guard are woefully underpowered. They make weapons kits for the worst weapons in the book. The best units in the entire army are made out of cheap GW plastic kits. Their standard infantry are incredible and the Hetaeron companions are one of the best and coolest units in the game, despite not having models or even weapons. It's like they want you to play Custodes in both 30k and 40k by just buying a bunch of their cheapest kits and kitbashing some weapons. Also, Valdor's weapon makes perfect sense. It was made by the Emperor for pretty much the explicit purpose of trolling him, and I think it looks the part well. I also think that his model can look good with the right paint job (the FW one is very technically excellent, but I think their scheme makes it look way more cluttered). I can't prove that, as mine is also sitting unpainted, largely because I get tired just by looking at it. The best part about his model, though, is imagining it in setting. Say what you want about all the primarch models, but you can legitimately see them walking around and just living like that. Even Horus 2: ossified bonealoo looks kinda plausible for his character right at the end of the siege. Look at Valdor and explain to me how the hell he does anything. He's not just a warrior and commander. He shows up in the lore in meetings and conversations all the time. Imagine him sitting in a chair or trying to carry out a serious conversation. It's abundantly clear that everyone who wrote him was not picturing this model. It would also take him probably a year and a thousand menial servitors to clean and launder all the bullshit he's wearing after every combat.

I have Valdosta (3rd party) where i just made the base then started and took away bits and did some wroth work so when I get him off GW I know what I’m doing because OMG there is an amazing model under all of that crap but it take work to bring it out

The Custodes swords are perhaps the ugliest weapon I’ve ever had to paint. I hated them so much that I replaced every one with a Nemesis Force Sword from the Grey Knights kits. They aren’t perfect, but they look so much better than the electrified ironing boards that came with these guys.

I think the Blade on the Halberd should have taken 'centre mass' in place of the bolter. The Shield Captains Halberd works for me, but gun taking centre mass has always felt wrong to me. They're going to break the barrel of their gun when they chop someone with the blade.... Weird design imo. The Custodes look amazing at first glance, but their proportioning really suffers from the GW Plastic 'fat and chunk' scale distortion.

Lol @ the "surfboard with a hammer". You are totally right though, the sword simply doesn't look cool. And you're right, it's weird that this design made it through so many layers of management without getting flagged. If they removed the attached bolter, and used all that space to give is a huge thick handle, making it a heavy two handed sword. That could work and look awesome.

I love the Aquilons too! Some of the coolest looking units in the Heresy I think! Ironically, I always thought (in 1.0 at least) that with the Aquilons, I'd want to swap the claws and the fists around. So each guy can deal with both light and heavy targets! But the firepikes look so cool!!!! I really like the 'basic' termies with those destroyers. But I also am partial to that kind of loadout on termies anyways. Love me some fist and combi bolters. Makes them feel like the elite 'jobbers' of the army. The guys who really getting down and dirty and doing all the nitty gritty wetwork!!

I use Trajan Valoris with a head swap and the blade champion as my HQs.

I agree with almost everything he said except for on the custodian guard models being too much gold theres a lot of different places to add color like red on the gauntlets you can do different colors on the cords that hang arround the waist or the leather style straps theres also the plumes and the spear shaft i agree that the waist cape wouldve been a great addition but if they'd done that it would've taken from what makes the wardens special but thats just my opinion overall hes right about almost everything else

I took the raven thing and the monster head off of his shoulders ....think I may have taken the claw thing falling from his left shoulder of as well and he looks much better

I dont like how you have to keep mentioning how big some models are. What's stopping GW from putting a scale or a marine silhouette next to one of the pictures? Lots of other companies do this for size comparison, and it drives me batty that GW doesn't.

Ironically, they do add a scale sometimes. And their unit of choice for 30k is a Primaris Marine (facepalm)

I have a lore question regarding the solar watch: were they around during the horus heresy? Or was it just the OG golden boys? Was wondering since I'm planning on painting some up and would like to know if they'd be usable in 30k.

any idea why the forgeworld models are painted so differently to the plastic models?

As well as a different style of painter at FW, they were allowed to use non GW paints. The eavy metal team are only allowed to use GW paints which limits them massively

Guardian spears are so stupid. That thing would be so inconvenient either to grip as a spear or to fire like a rifle. All they had to do was make the shaft a long cylinder with a trigger on it somewhere, but instead we have that massive box which basically makes it impossible to shift the grip on the spear, or to grab it in the middle at all.

Custodes are bodyguards they aren't supposed to stand out. Valdor is so terrible

I literally do not use the objectively better shield wardens because the swords are so ugly.
