I had a very similar interaction happen where I went out of my way to save a blue toad who died on this very level, and yet we were still both able to finish the level with time to spare. I hope he's doing ok.

Spring -Mario physics- Feet was already impossible without a power up to tank the damage, but Invisibility was just downright evil.

You might have been scanning the wrong area of the screen, mario is slightly behind the middle of the screen in the direction he's moving. I had a much easier time when I realized this
