It would be cool to take Randall’s class on the subject and ask him such things.

    100%. The problem is, we can all see that there is something REALLY special about these shapes that exhibit 3D symmetry. You see them in pollen, you see pyrite form in crystal habits of every Platonic Solid depending on the heat and pressure those crystals formed under which is absolutely bonkers. But what does it all mean? Is it just about optimal efficiency and utilisation of available materials? Are there other properties to these shapes beyond visual interest? I have no idea, but just looking at them prompts something curious in me I can’t put into words. The problem comes when those pseudoscientific cuckoos come along and project their New Age psychobabble onto it. I do think there’s some really special things about them, I just have no idea what they are. Sure wish I did though.

    The geometry of life is everywhere it’s literally underpins everything you can see it in religious symbols it’s so ubiquitous. To think the bottom layer is this chaotic random mess is just silly. Things randomly popping in and out of existence being in two places and not knowing where anything is coming from is absurd. When the very next level is geometrically precise, and consistent and mathematically predictable. Sorry the two are incompatible or is it realistic to believe it’s true.

    As a machinist I’m blown away. Thinking about the precision of the vase the machine that made this would have needed to be incredibly rigid. Also the cutting tools employed would have had to been to a precision not even employed in aircraft or rocket manufacturing. Tolerance is typically on even precise holes held to +.0005, that’s half a thou. The fact that it’s also using a algorithm to produce the radius of each surface feature is mind blowing. There is a incredible sophistication to this that is out of time and should disturb everyone to what we have been told about history and how accurate it is.

  • @oldscratch3535

    @oldscratch3535

    You still have people out there who think this can be done by hand or on a simple wooden man powered lathe. I run Tsugami Swiss machines. I couldn't even make this vase on that machine and they are very, very capable of complex work. I couldn't do the internal geometry. The workholding and part transfer to the sub spindle would also be very difficult b/c of the oblate spheroid shape and integrated handles. I could easily do it out of aluminum on a 5-axis though. Granite is a different story. Another problem people don't think about is tooling. You need tooling that is easily replaceable and that is manufactured to a repeatable tolerance so tool changes don't induce large variations in geometry. If it does, you then need a way to input work offsets to compensate for differing tool tolerances. Just like when I change inserts in my machine, I usually have to go in and make wear offsets to get the tool cutting back to nominal. And that's with precision made machines and tooling. To make something this precise you also have to have a way to measure the precision. That's another layer of sophistication and technology. You cannot make precision objects without being able to measure precision objects. You cannot measure precision objects without being able to gage and qualify your measuring instruments to a standard. I have to have granite surface plates, standards, and gages at hand just to qualify my measuring instruments so I can accurately measure my parts. People who aren't astonished by these vases or think they can be easily made with primitive tools have no concept of the principles of machining, workholding, and metrology.

    @@oldscratch3535I have some experience with precision machining. Our family ran multiple lumber mills employing half a dozen millwrights, and I helped a teeny bit. Just enough to understand how difficult some of this stuff is to duplicate. I think what has happened is people generally lack even a cursory understanding like mine in this or other fields. So they see everything as either simple and achievable (usually because some authority figure told them so) or it's magic and beyond mortal means (they also tend to think this only if they've been told so, like with macroeconomics). Extending the metaphor, you're a wizard of some ability and I'm a dropout who only got so far in my studies to know how to intelligently read your spellbooks. To everyone else, it's woo.

So if these offsets were incorporated into the final stage of the object to account for the error introduced by tool changes, then how the hell did they abrade/polish the vase while maintaining tolerance if they had no way of measuring down to the 1000th of an inch?

    @oldscratch3535 exactly, these look like they were made on a 5 axis mill, or mill/turn. I'm leaning towards 5 axis mill due to lack of mismatch between surfaces in the area between the lug handles. What a Marvelous podcast to get into. Always good to stop by and get sucked into a discussion about something that actually makes this audience feel as if parting ways too soon is a totally a true waste of a great time. One cannot leave earlier than the last word spoken. This is ultimately the best way to endeavor as entertainment to remember. One thinks of having questions to bring to the next session. I lose a little bit of composure sometimes when this Guy happens to ask what Is actually running around in my mind or what I’m quietly thinking out loud and gets the answers. Never Duplicated. Never dull and Always Original. This is the way to do a show. I found this channel, awhile ago, by mistake once upon a time and I haven’t been able to to catch enough of these shows. Keep Us Intrigued. This Audience is absolutely here for it. Take it easy and stay Blessed. Best channel Nothing comes close. Rogan is okay but this is how the quality should be every cast. I’m not sure these shows can be seen as comparison to anyone else out here doing a similar gig. These shows have, no doubt, been most of the best Podcasts on the platform. No disrespect to anybody who’s been in the game so far. It just isn’t dealing with dramatic issues or problematic with variables in quality. I’m definitely a Fan. Nothing else beats an Intelligently Modern Cornucopia. This is the most interesting content out here. Imagine looking forward to being in the audience like it used to be as kids and watching Saturday Morning Cartoons.(Laughing gently) Okay, I’m done. Stay Blessed and keep doing it better.” -LEv; MAB

    @@HarryWolf I can’t stand this reply. Don’t pretend like you will actually listen if someone points out how they are wrong. Randall isn’t an obvious kook but Ben thinks the moon is a spaceship and that ancient Egyptians had power tools because he can’t understand what he is looking at and takes everything at face value. It’s really easy to say “wow how did they do that?” But it’s really hard to change your mind when you’ve decided on a position and defend it in the face of valid criticism. Here’s a deal, tell me what you think is Ben’s worst argument and we can go from there. If you can show that you aren’t just in cult maybe it’s worth discussing.

    That’s probably because he literally teaches a class on it. And his goal is to get people to understand. Not to get status from sounding smart. People who are legit trying to get the student to learn will explain things in the simplest way to accomplish that goal. It’s easy to confuse and sound smart. Eric Weinstein does it all the time. Maybe the topics he talks about can’t be simplified. I love Eric but I rarely understand what he’s talking about. Randall also dwells on topics for a long time so it gives plenty of time to learn.

    Ben explained it in another episode and many places... the level of precision on something like the Great Pyramid is UNBELIEVABLELY accurate and tight and for something that is just a tomb and/or other purpose built... its just not needed. They could've achieved the same result with less precise detail and tightness and also they (scientists/engineers/etc) have tried methods to build a pyramid and you can do it with smaller stones and less detail and it takes FARRR less time and energy and overall everything to finish it, yet they still did all that stuff. He's talking about the vase right now... 1/1000th of a inch, half a human hair tolerances, rose granite... with copper chisels and stone pounders?! LMAO sure........ just a bunch of men and maybe women with weak egos who cant stand to see the cash and power grab being on team Egypt brings for everything or just keeping the status quo.

    Yeah it doesn’t even matter if it was functional or not. The fact that they were able to make things that precise is itself proof they had the ability to do so. The mainstream story is not a very compelling hypothesis.
