🎵 Rammstein Du Hast Reaction

Thanks for checking out our Rammstein reaction. We watched Du Hast on a live stream a not too long ago. This was an interesting song because we had no clue what he was saying, but the gang filled us in a little bit in the live chat.

    Hello from Germany! Many people have problems to translate and understand the lyrics from Rammstein. The reason is, that the lyrics in their songs are a kind of art and poetry. So you can´t only translate the words. Art should provoke and everyone can interpret art himselfs. So the meaning of the song could be diffrent for everyone who hears it. For example in Germany could "Du hast mich gefragt (You have asked me)" be interpreted like the short phrase of "Du hast mich gefragt ob ich Dich heiraten will (You have asked me if i want to marry you)". The reaction of this question is "...und ich hab nichts gesagt (...and i say nothing)". The follow question traditional is asked by a priest at the marriage altar in Germany "Willst Du bis der Tot Euch scheidet treu Ihr sein für alle tage (Do you want to be faithful to her for all days long until that the death separates you)" The answer of this question in the Song is "Nein (No)!" Maybe you understand at the second refrain "Du hasst mich (You hate me)" and no more "Du hast mich (You have me)". Both expressions sounds the same in Germany! There are only a few words in the Song "Du Hast", but there are many ways to understand them. Sorry for my poorly english, but i hope you understand what I mean...

    Lyrical breakdown: Some folks confuse the original German version "Du Hast" (You Have) with the English version "You Hate". Not the same song. The second would be spelled Du Hasst, (Haßt). The original German version lyrically could be interpreted as a 3 part conversation between a bride, groom, and priest at altar. "You have me. You have asked me and I said nothing." Priest: (loosley translated) Will you love her even in the bad days and the death of her "sheath" ("tod euch scheide" aka menopause). Bride: (inner thought of happiness) Jaaaa! (Yes!) Groom: NEIN! (NO!) Then he leaves her. Their whole music catalog is incredibly weird when you take the time to translate and put their lyrics into context. FWIW, Rammstein name themselves after the air base in Germany (Ramstein rhymes with 'mine') where there was an air show accident in 1988 that killed 70 people and injured 500 more. They have a self-titled track that tells that story. I am retired Air Force and was stationed there for 7 years. 🤘🤘💥💥💥 "Heirate Mich" (trans. Marry Me) is my fav track by them. I recommend you check it out. It's kind of a creepy German version of Poe's 'Annabel Lee"

    Thank you. I am Danish and speak middling German and I was confused why they said it meant hate, as I always understood it as what you say, then I got confused and thought maybe I was misunderstanding. I always heard it as "bis der Tod euch scheidet" - until death parts you. Nothing to do with female genitalia, just a traditional formulation of marriage vows. But if he does use "scheide", it could be the conjunctive, another play on words after hast/hasst. Rammstein are clever enough to do that.

    I love how Brad is sitting there processing what he’s looking at and Lex is bouncing and enjoying the beat. Btw it’s not blood, it’s pyro gel so he doesn’t get burned from the fireworks. Amazing how one band can have the French people singing in German love the unity

  • @BunniMonster
    @BunniMonster2 жыл бұрын

    Your "Expert" in chat is wrong about the translation. Du hasst = You hate. Du hast = You have. It's a piece of intentional wordplay, you don't know if he's saying "Have" or "Hate" until the following line. The lyrics are essentially wedding vows being turned down. This was a successful song commercially but not their best, not by a mile, it's very simple and accessible. You'll end up doing plenty more Rammstein as time goes on so I won't bother making any specific requests, I do suggest you pull up translated lyrics after watching the performances though, they combine poetry with some... Interesting subject matter. Their live shows are crazy good, I saw them live in 2005 and almost melted in the heat of the pyro.

Till Lindemann is such an epic front man i literally used to look at him like he was an action star or something when i was younger, he has such an awesome stage presence and strong voice, Rammstein is a big deal, I even learned about them in German class in highschool back in 2005 cause my german teacher was awesome! could definitely do some more Rammstein reactions! Hete’ what “Du hast” is all about according to Wikipedia: The title Du hast is a play on words with the second person singular of haben and hassen. The content is about a marriage proposal that the lyrical I is initially undecided about accepting, but ultimately decides against, which becomes clear in the refrain: "Will you till death do you part Be faithful to her for all your days? (Yes), No! Will you till death do you part Love her even in evil days? (Yes), No!"

    @Gavin Lisle please, if native speakers explain to you part of their language, maybe trust their opinion. The wordplay is so obvious that little children (german ones of course) grasp this concept intuitively. If you are interested there is a video of little german kids reacting to rammstein and giving their thoughts and opinions (it's a pretty cute video and has subtitles). The play works because of how the text only gradually expands its meaning(s).

    Thank you for the Review!!!!!!!! A small remark to the Lyrics, especially for Brad, who always wants to dig to the deepest core (;-)) "Du hasst " means "you hate", but "du hast" sounds like the same thing, but means "you have". The lyrics of the song play with this double meaning. The song begins with "You, you have 3x. you have asked me, you have asked me you have asked me ..........and I said nothing". From the context with the rest of the text, we can conclude that she may have asked for marriage. Because the text goes on to say if he wants to be faithful. this line is the oficial version: Willst du, bis dass der Tod dich scheidet Ihr treu sein für alle Tage? in english Will you, until death do you part be faithful to her until the end of your days? But he sings here in the performance "Willst du, bis zum Tod der Scheide Ihr treu sein für all deine Tage?" "der Tod euch scheidet" means "until death separates you" but he sang "Scheide" as Substantiv without the "t" at the end and this means Vagina. Now you can put it together by yourself! I am only the Translator! And yes, the Lyrics of Rammstein are full of these Easter eggs.

    @@DarthPoyner I am german my friend. It's true that sometimes there might be a different meaning in the same sentences, but this is clearly what they mean. Plus in the next part where he's doing the wedding vow (which is a question) and then answers "no" to it. So please do not use literal or direct translation and trust me on this one as a german. It bothers me in almost every videos where they think it's "You hate". Like, if you do a little bit of work and translate the sentence as a whole you would get the right translation. Even though I don't get why people add the second S in context if you try "du hast" no translator should result in you hate because it's just not the same word, there is missing the S. And to finish of my novel here (sorry for that) : grammar is very important in this case. in german "Du hast" is not considered a sentence and that means that the sentence itself only works and makes sense when completed. Much love from Germany share music share love my friends.

    the rumor when I was in high school was that his intention was for it to be both at the same time. the song is about a bad relationship so he's playing off the german wedding vows and the phonetic similarities between hast and hasst. because it's a play of the wedding vows for the story I think it would have to be written as hast from an artistic stand point. he might be singing "you have" in the german version but my guess would be he's intending for it to be taken both ways for the majority of the song. also, are the sounds distinct enough to be able to tell which word it is without sentence structure for context??

'Du' then 'Du hast' then 'Du hast Mich' and then 'Do hast Mich gefragt' which pretty much literally 'You have asked me'. Und Ich have nichts gesagt = And I said nothing (didn't say anything). The question is pretty much from a wedding vow - 'Willst du, bis der Tod euch scheidet, Treu ihr sein für alle Tage?' and that's something like 'Will you stay faithful (or true or whatever), till death, every day' - or around/about. And then the answer a couple fo times is 'Nein!' as in 'No.'

    Right, it is a wordplay, but there is more going on. When you hear 'du hasst mich' one thinks he's saying 'you hate me'. As soon as he sings 'du hast mich gefragt', it can only mean 'you asked me'. That is followed by the Refrain 'Willst du bis der Tod uns scheidet treu sein...' which is (almost) the classic marriage formula ''will you be faithful until death does part us'. Only at that point, the earlier part makes really sense 'You asked me' [will you be faithful until...] 'und ich hab nichts gesagt'='and i said nothing' Later he changes the Refrain from 'Willst du bis der Tod uns scheidet, treu sein in allen Tagen?' to 'Willst du bis zum Tod der Scheide, sie lieben auch in schlechten Tagen?' Corus: 'NEIN!!!' Translation: 'will you be faithful until [the] death [of her] Vagina, love her too in bad days?' Corus: 'NO!!!' Also, 'Treue sein in allen Tagen' does indeed mean 'Will you be faithful all days', but in German, the days of a women also commonly means her Period ('oh no, she has her Days') Well, there is a lot of wordplay going on, and it's not exactly Goethe :D The word plays and 'hidden' meanings are fun (in german), the sound is great, the show is great. But as usual, don't try to read too much sense in a song. He's basically saying that his spouse hates him and he wanna cheat her :p

    Rammstein are the founding fathers of what is called "Industrial Metal", it's Metal mixed up with electronic and especially techno music. They're very much a visual band as much for their crazy live shows with tones of pyro and various props than for their powerful and beautiful Music videos that are worth watching too!

    @@armanbektasevic4369 They are industrial metal, but strictly speaking not at all the founding fathers - that honour arguably goes to Throbbing Gristle.. Ministry and White Zombie took up the baton (commercially at least), and there are a multitude of other bands. As Arman said Laibach were right there in the mix along with the likes of Godflesh, Killing Joke and Nitzer Ebb. Rammstein are fantastic, and I love them, but their biggest success is making industrial commercial and they are standing on the shoulders of giants.
