    One of the best reactions done by people from outside of Germany. You got A LOT right just by watching this video! Concerning Ruby, the actress portraiying Germania: she is actually German and was chosen probably for two reasons: to "destroy" any naive expectations of the viewers and also to underline that this is a song about Germany. Her skin, combined with the red beams and golden armour, makes the German colours (black-red-golden) complete.

    @@erlenken This model is an a lot of Rammstein Videos. She's kind of a part of Rammstein. They don't care the skincolour at all, cause it's not important, but it's still useful for symbolism to express a message. And exactly that effect makes the whole video complete. It's controverse and that's why people talk about it.

    The black lady is the Berlin-born German actress Ruby Commey. Her role in the video is Germania (I believe she's credited as such), the personification of the German nation. So yes, she literally is Germany. That's why she's in so many different roles as both ruler/authority figure and victim, and always as a witness to the acts of her people. So Rammstein did cast a German woman to play Germany itself, but they subverted the expectation of an ethnic trope (and probably intentionally to spited Aryan racial ideology) and reflected the complexity of modern Germany instead by choosing a black German woman. BTW, I'm pretty sure the feast scene where the religious figures are devouring Germania while symbolic perversion happens literally just out of view beneath is a metaphor for the horrors Germany experienced during the Reformation and especially the Thirty Years' War. The population losses during that era were staggering since Germany was the battlefield of Europe at the time, leaving Germany with something like half the population it had started with. Religious conflict had devoured the nation and the whole thing was pretty fundamentally obscene.

    A lot of people do not understand the scenes with the dogs. This breed of dogs are not German Shepards, but Leonberger. This breed of dog narrowly escaped extinction during the First and Second World Wars and is symbolic of the German people, whose existence was also strongly threatened in those wars - both now have a second existential chance. The whole Video will understand only Historians and Germans and these people also have to watch the video several times. The song is about the ambivalent relationship of Rammstein and many Germans to their country, because of the violent and cruel history with extensive human crimes, especially in recent history. Therefore the video features various events from German history, including Roman times, the Middle Ages, witch hunting and burning, Protestant Reformation, the November Revolution, the "Golden Twenties" and hyperinflation, Nazi book burnings, the Hindenburg disaster, the First and Second World Wars, the Holocaust, the Weimar Republic, the Red Army Fraction (violent anti-capitalist terror alliance of young people and students against Nazis in high state and economy positions in post-war Germany), and the division of the country into West and East Germany including the Uprising June 17 in East Germany. The black woman represents Germany, sometimes as a victim, but mostly as a perpetrator. With her black skin she is also a provocation to all stupid racists The Holocaust was for this reason the greatest human crime because it was the first industrially organized mass murder in human history, by a country that was culturally at its highest point at this time in the world and called itself the country of poets and thinkers. But it is precisely the high cultural and scientific level of Germany that unfortunately caused others to be viewed as subhuman who can be killed without pity, just like animals. Seeing other people as inferior has always brought a lot of suffering to people

    Very well interpreted. It should be added that the Roman period refers to Arminius, who united many enemy Germanic tribes for the first time. Furthermore, the Germania plays a major role, since it represents the personification of Germany (historically seen).

    true, but in the end those dogs turn out to be german shepherds (when they're grown up). i think there are mainly 3 layers to that: 1. german shepherds are the 'most typical and iconic' german breed. even hitler had one (blondi), many police dogs are german shepherds (although nowadays more and more belgian shepherds are used) and the national reference is even in the name of that breed. 2. the scene with germania and the grown up shepherds on the leash refers to the quadriga (the statue on top of the brandenburg gate) and hence to the german divide and later reunion (as the brandenburg gate probably was the most iconic part of the berlin wall). 3. the whole thing with the shepherds in slomo is a nod to jan böhmermann's "be deutsch", who also featured a german shepherd in slowmo (which itself was a nod to "iron" by woodkid). böhermann's "be deutsch" was an hommage to rammstein's music and had a somewhat similar message as rammstein's "deutschland" has. back then rammstein liked that so much, they posted böhmermann's song on their social media accounts.

    I'm from Germany so let me give you some thoughts from someone who's born here. First of all, first time I watched the video I was shocked and deeply moved. The song/ video takes a very deep look into our german souls and how most of us feel about our country. It's a love- hate- relationship. The video is loaded with tons of symbols, that as a German you catch onto. Let's start: in the intro you see Germania ( Personification of Germany) during roman/ germanian tribes time. The red Lazer represents the "red thread" of the story/ history. Astronauts from the future bringing Germania in a glass coffin (snow-white) so she can lead through the/her german history. Next you observe the twenties(Weimar Republic).The prison scene representing the rough, violent times especially for the majority of the population struggling to survive. Money raining down/ the great depression. And Germany's first try as a democratic state. In between Germania is dressed in knight's armor awaking her knights/band with the Lazarus spear. Next Germania is pushed in a wheelchair by the band through the Berlin Holocaust Memorial with burning bodies. Next vignette the office scene showing east Germany and west Germany reunited (1989). Then you're being taken back to mideveal times, monks/ church are feasting off of Germania. In most scenes you'll see some church man involved. No coincidence. The concentration camp scene in the background you see V2 rockets ignition. The inmates are wearing different types of stars on their chests and a sign on the gallows reads: no photos. Germania wears an eye-patch first on her left, than on her right eye. Than a quick shot of Germania dressed modern with lots of gold leading german shepherds., representing Germany's wealth. The 70's scene shows the RAF- extremists holding Germania/ Germany hostage. Next vignette is the witch burnings shifting to the book burning. If you have a close look, at minute @ you see a church man holding up a cross hugging a Nazi, symbolising the churches over all position to the horrific events happening during 1933-1945. The birth scene. Germania is giving birth to dogs respectively "Leonberger" a breed preferred by Kings and Queens. The Breed almost went extinct during WW1 and WW2. A cardinal helping (dressed in red) a new Germany being born. At minute @ you see the riots against refugees homes in the 90's in Hoyerswerda. Molotovs are being thrown and a car is being pushed over with the help of a man dressed in Nazi uniform. Than the scenes/ time vignettes start shifting faster and faster, showing how many times, when circumstances becoming to extreme everything is falling apart and Germania ( dressed in knight's) armor is crying. The outro is the piano version of the song "Sonne" which completed how we feel thinking of our past: a sense of sadness. To sum it up. Germany has a long, wild, violent, unique history, because we as a state of today exist only since 1989. Yet the roots go back a very long time. "Young and yet so old" I hope that helped a little to understand the video and with that us Germans. We don't have a strong feeling of patriotism, but a strong sense of unity. It's complicated. With love from Germany 🤘 😎

    Hi, I'm from Germany. Rammstein is playing a classic "Industrial Metal" style. A 50-50 mix of synthesizers and hard metal guitars. A big part of the German history in one video. The black woman as Germania. Germania is the personification of the German nation. It isn't and wasn't a goddess or Joan of Arc. The glass coffin: It is Little Snow White from the Grimm-fairytales....and from their own video "Sonne". Only with black skin and in space. The piano song at the end is the song "Sonne", too. The words "Germania Magna" at the beginning are a Roman name for the area of Germany, that wasn't conquered by the Roman Empire at that time. Germania Superior and Germania Inferior were the Roman conquered areas (Roman provinces) of Germany. The line in this song "So jung und doch so alt" (So young and yet so old) means: Germany as a unified state is very young. A unified German nation is only existing from 1871 onwards. Before that year of unification Germany was made of countless, little mini-states and the people identified first and foremost as Prussians, Hessians, Saxons etc, etc, etc. and only in a second line of thought they had a lose sense of being somehow Germans, too, as a kind of unifying second identity. So the area & the landscape where the Germans are living and the Germans themselves as a people...are thousands of years old. But only recently, in 1871, there was a unified Germany as one single state. So Germany as a unified state is very young...and at the same time it is thousands of years old. The battle of the Teutoburg forest against the Romans (and Rammstein as Roman soldiers and Germans alike). That battle is of ABSOLUTE importance for the German history. The hanged bodies in the trees were the beaten Roman soldiers, who were gruesome sacrificed to the Germanic gods...and were partly nailed to the trees. The Varus-(Teutoburg)-Battle was already in 9 AD. In 16 AD were the vengeance campaigns of commanding field general Germanicus under Emperor Tiberius Augustus. Therefore we see here the arrival of the Roman troops of Germanicus and they are watching their dead comrades hanging in the trees or getting their heads chopped off (for nailing them to the trees). In reality the Romans under Germanicus found only the bones of the Varus army in the various ways they were slaughtered, sacrificed and displayed at the trees. Slaves were liberated even decades after the battle. After the scenes with the Romans we saw the Hindenburg Zeppelin disaster (the burning Zeppelin in the background). The moustaches and clothing from the fight scene are from WWI and post WWI years. From the working class people in WWI and the roaring 20's. In the WWII years later on this kind of big bushy moustache was already out of fashion. The falling banknotes in the prison are not about corruption. That scene is about the hyper-inflation of the 1920's, that took away the savings of the Germans and left them in deep poverty and desperation. One had to pay a loaf of bread with a handcart full of nearly worthless banknotes back then and it hit the German people deep down inside and in their souls. Especially the poor ones and the simple workers. The V2 rocket (first manmade object in space) as technical triumph of the German spirit...and at the same time the killing of the concentration camp prisoners in the bunker factories below the mountains during the production of that rocket. This scene in the video could be a representation of a very specific concentration camp. It was "Mittelbau-Dora" below the Kohnstein mountain. A mixture between a big, huge bunker factory for V1 and V2 rockets and a concentration camp. The concentration camp inmates had several different markings for different kinds of convicts and their "crimes" sown to their chests, like it was in reality, too. A pink triangle for homosexuals, the star of David for Jews and two of them were marked with the double-triangles for Jehovas Whitnesses. The book burnings of the Nazis and the burning of the witches of the church. In the same scene with the book burning there is EVEN MORE going on. The cooperation of the church with the Nazis, when the priest with the cross embraces the Nazi SA-man. The scene with the sign with the Hammer and a pair of compasses in a circle of wheat is the sign of the GDR (DDR). The socialst German state in the east that existed before the German reunification. Therefore it was Karl Marx in the background in the scene with the tank (not the scene at the concentration camp). The scene with Rammstein wielding guns (the pumpgun) and taking Germania hostage was about leftwing terrorism of the 1970's. The terrorists were called the RAF (Rote Armee Fraktion). My interpretation of the red scanner-like beams: There are two different kinds of beams. The massive straight red light beam that goes up into the heavens AND there were those smaller, thinner "scanner" beams. Aliens (or humans from the future) are scanning the whole German history. Like some real scientists are scanning and excarvating ancient Mexican or Egyptian statues, for example. The massive red light beam is the red ribbon of time that ties together all the historical events. PS: As for the dogs: Germans are fanatical dog lovers. We are a dog-owner nation. The dog is a firm part of Germany. PPS: They didn't eat the body of the woman and her inner organs, even if it really looked that way. They were eating the national dish of Germany, that was put on the body of the black woman: Sauerkraut, Kassler & sausages. In my opinion it symbolizes the church eating itself fat on the goods and values and food of Germany during the simple people (farmers, simple workers etc) lived a long time in a kind of hell of poverty and serfdom (the red fetish area below the table with Germania on it). But that eating scene could indeed have a double meaning. It could represent the 30 years war, that was fought for religious reasons and depopulated large areas of Germany. It forced the people to commit canibalism because nobody was there anymore to produce food. Except the fat, wealthy people of the church, of course. They were still able to eat enough. Only the simple people at the bottom (farmers etc) died from hunger and had to fight and die in that war. The 30 years war was the biggest catastrophe in Germany until WWI happened. PPPS: The short scene with the dogs and their gas masks = WWI, where in reality animals (messenger dogs & horses) AND soldiers were wearing gas masks, too. PPPPS: The puppies at the end are Leonberger dogs. The Leonbergers nearly went extinct during WWI and WWII. PPPPPS: The black woman in the prison was dressed in a Prussian uniform with a Prussian helmet. Till sings the famous, often misinterpreted, line of the "Deutschlandlied" (Song of the Germans), that is not forbidden in Germany but simply isn't sung anymore in our modern national anthem. Till sings in his version the line "Deutschland über allen" (Germany above everybody) What is a BIG change to the real line in the orginal Deutschlandlied-song. In the original Deutschlandlied song it is written as "Deutschland über alles" (Germany above everything). The real, whole line of that old Deutschlandlied goes "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles. Über alles in der Welt" (Germany, Germany above everything. Above everything in the world). This line is often misinterpreted by many people as chauvinism and as a looking down upon all other countries on this planet. But that is wrong and not many people know about that in Germany and elsewhere. The writer of that famous line didn't meant it in a chauvinistic way. When that song was written, Germany was divided into umphteenth mini-states, what made Germany relative powerless and defenseless. Therefore the task of German unification was the goal above any other goal for all Germans (at least the writer of the song meant it that way). So the main goal for all Germans had to be the united Germany. The goal of "(united) Germany above everything else". That was, how that line was meant by the writer of the song. The line isn't forbidden, like many people wrongly think. It's simply not sung anymore and not part of the official anthem of modern Germany anymore. This has NOT its reason in the seemingly chauvinist meaning of "Deutschland über alles", like many people wrongly think. This whole stanza of the Deutschlandlied isn't sung anymore, because in other parts of the stanza are borders and landscapes mentioned, that aren't German borders and landscapes anymore. We want to live in peace with the people and countries, who are now living in those former German lands and therefore we don't sing about those old borders and landscapes anymore. It has nothing to do with the "Deutschland über alles" line in that stanza, like many people wrongly are thinking. Finally: The scenes I'm now talking about are pretty dark and low light. The WWII submarine in the submarine bunker during the astronauts are walking by with the glass coffin. I think, the choice of the black woman as main actress was made, because: a) it makes any accusations of racism and fascism against Rammstein useless b) she represents one colour of the German flag and she is wearing the rest of the colours of our German flag as makeup and jewellery and clothes on her body: Black, Red and Gold c) it provokes many people EVEN MORE 😄 Greetings Mega

    PS: KZread didn't allow me to integrate this information into the bigger text (above) for unknown reasons, therefore I'm posting it here: The troops, who smashed the Jewish shops during the Kristallnacht (not shown in the video) were SA (Sturmabteilung) in brown uniform and not the later SS (Schutzstaffel) in the black uniform. The SA did all the dirty work at the beginning of the Nazi rise to power...until the "Night of the long knives", an inner-Nazi power struggle, happened. The head of the SA (Ernst Röhm) was killed and from then on the SA was turned more and more into the SS under Himmler. The book burnings were part of the early Nazi years, too, and were done by the SA, too. One can see the SA burning the books and Till is watching it in a brown SA uniform. Both, Kristallnacht and book burnings were different things and happened at different times. The book burnings happened over a longer timespan at different locations at different times during the Kristallnacht was one big "event" that happened at one single day. Kristallnacht means "Crystal Night" and was called that way, because the smashed shop windows of the Jewish shops looked like thousands of crystals on the ground. But in the Rammstein video I've only seen the book burnings. PPS: The two beer drinking soldiers to the left side of the table, where Germania is lying on and where the priests are eating Sauerkraut & Sausages from her body, are not French soldiers and they aren't representing the French revolution. Those two beer drinking soldiers are Prussian soldiers and they are emphasizing the importance of Prussia for the German history. As far as I could see: They were from the era of Friedrich der Große (The Old Fritz), who was of extraordinary importance for German history. Amongst many other achievements he was the one, who brought the potato to Prussia and Germany. That saved many Germans from hunger and the potato became one of the most beloved foods in Germany on that way. BTW: Your reaction and you interpreting the video together with your brother is one of the best reactions to this video by far...and believe me: I've watched them all. Like your brother I'm especially moved by the piano version of "Sonne" at the end...and he spoke out of my heart when he told you to continue to play the end credits and not interrupting them. I'm thinking with a shudder of disgust about all the very bad reactions on KZread, where the reactors are stopping the reaction right at the beginning of the end credits because "nothing is happening anymore". That tells me always a lot about those reactors in a negative way.

We always talk about the Nazis killing Jews, but these Jews were Germans or Polish or Czechs, as well. They were coworkers, neighbours, teachers, housewives, just part of the society. Then they were outcasted, dehumanized, and in the end murdered. I think, one member of the band killing the other just show how incredibly evil and also incredible pointless this was.

    I always enjoy reactions made by Russians - there tends to be a much greater awareness of history and more nuanced thinking. (No American reactor ever watched this video and commented, as you did, on the soul-crushing wall cutting through the heart of the German capital!) And you two did not disappoint - спасибо! The dogs shown are Leonberger and "were seriously affected by the two world wars. During World War I, reportedly, only five Leonbergers survived World War and were bred until World War II when, again, almost all Leonbergers were lost. During the two world wars, Leonbergers were used to pull the ammunition carts, a service to the breed's country that resulted in the Leonbergers' near-destruction." Germania gives birth to a litter and her knights (Rammstein's members) cradle and protect them. This may be interpreted that twice before, the nation has come back from the brink, and may just have another chance. Absolutely poignant and inspiring.

They find corpses nailed to the trees and see how soldiers were sacrificed and tortured. It must have been a horrific sight. The Romans bury friend and foe alike in 16 aD and that's the point in time where 'Germania' kidnapped the head of Till to take it through a historic journey.

    Man this was THE best reaction video to this song! your interpretations make a lot of sense. For example the whole hanging scene and what you said about that ordinary people mostly didn´t even know this was happening (which i can at least confirm from the storys of my grandma who lived near breslau/krakow at the time) and i realized that, if the black actress (who did a wonderful job btw.) was representing germania, it would make so much sense because she´s wearing an eye patch she´s literally blind on one eye. OR it could mean that people who did know what was going on but were to afraid to do something that they would turn a blind eye. I could go on and on about this but i´ll leave it at that^^ wish you the best guys and greetings from Deutschland ;D

    The woman is “Germania”-all of Germany throughout history. She revels in her people even as they revere her. But, like her people, she is shaken by the violence and contradictions of their history I think the SF looking future and the drifting into orbit after being solemnly prepared by her people, symbolizes that the old, violent past form of Germany will be left behind (Germania on the cross as an angel-the reform) but the old never fully vanishes. It floats out of sight in the darkness, always present and always possibly to return. The German Shepard puppies are (I think) a sort of Romulus and Remus callback: Germany started with a bestowal and cruel people and that heritage is always part of them. They want to become good (like an innocent puppy) but the wolf will always live in their nature, no matter how much they want to forget it.

    I don't even know what to comment. I watched so many reactions of this video just for the shock value or to see people discover Rammstein. But you two were the first people who really made me want to talk to them. I love the things you picked up. And the things I hadn't even considered yet. The comments are a testament to how great you two are. This is probably the best reaction of this Rammstein video I've seen so far. Maybe the next part is sounds controversial to some people, but I don't think it's a coincidence that you're Russian, Rammstein is German and I'm Austrian. All of us are familiar with the complicated relationship one can (or must) have with their own country. I've seen someone from Sweden react to this and become really emotional as well. There is a message within the song that everybody can understand without speaking a single word of German. A melancholy or sadness about the conflict of wanting to love your country for all that it is but at the same time not being able to give that love for the very same reason. I can't quite put it into words, but I'm sure you must at least feel what I'm talking about. I know that times are complicated and dangerous at the moment. I won't get into politics. Without even talking about it, I'm sure we would see eye to eye. Countries are layered and have different faces. I just hope to see Russia's other face again in the future and for Europeans to live peacefully together, whether they are from Vienna, Kyiv or Moscow.

    Brothers, this is the best English-language historical analysis of this deeply moving masterpiece. Thumbs up! The black lady does indeed stand for Germania, a symbol similar to Lady Liberty, it is also the Latin name for the country. As Germany, during the 20th century, was involved in three recognized genocides, including against black peoples, it has a pitch-black past. To symbolically represent that pitch-black past, we used a black woman. It's genius! Everything I've written before, about the possible multiple symbolism behind the use of the black woman, is invalidated by their song and video clip Ausländer (foreigner). Let's just say they've been creative. But, not that difficult with a series of German synthesizer bands, from the past, at your disposal. Leaning politically left, as Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema are considered politically left. The band has made beautiful songs, but also a lot of 13 in a dozen.

    You guys are spot on. Thanks for this reaction! Here are many good comments too, I only want to add that at the end of the video Rammstein choose, after this "chaotic scenery" and hard music coming in this quiet piano piece. It want to give us a bit of peace and after all, it goes on. The Germania flying in the space means eventually All is possible, the cosmos (future) is a unknown space. We have to make it right, better and we never should forget. Being patriotic means not denying the wrongdoings of the past and glorifying the highlights, it means being critical of ourselves while wanting to be good, being better and proud of it.

    You two are one of the people, who saw the songs meaning through and through. Such as Rammstein shows, how difficult it is for germans, to be even a little bit patriotic, because of the countrys history. And that the band shows, all countrys have their dark pasts, and fair of bloodshed. Yet, many trying to tend on the good parts only, not the faults that were made, even in history books. A good example, when america refuged members of the infamous japanese unit 731, which committed terrible crimes, in exchange for their scientific results.

LLAP, Avi P.S.: an analysis of it without taking a look at the lyrics cant be one :P

    The dogs are a very weird and obscure metaphor. The dog breed is a specific one called "Leonberger" which was created in germany and became popular in various royal houses. However the distinction of the breed is that they were nearly wiped out in both world wars as they were well suited for military purposes and after both wars artificially repopulated. My take of it would be that they represent an innocence that returned even after the worst of atrocities because people cared. As for choosing a black woman for Germania. Choosing a distinct German looking one would have sent an immediate connection to German nationalism as such personifications of countries were big in the 19th century. As the central figure it would have been impossible to avoid right wing nationalist connotations. That imagery was used in war propaganda of two world wars! By choosing a foreign looking person they prevent that association and make a more progressive statement about who Germans are and what Germany is which is also reflected in the lyrics. An intentional disconnect of a known allegory by choosing a subverted presentation, if you will.

    Since Leonberger's are above all priced for an obedient temperament, I am not sure I would interpret it that positively. It could also mean that there is a particular mindset which sadly not even two world wars could destroy completely. But that's the thing with this vid, it leaves a LOT of room for interpretation. The only thing one can't argue over is which part of history are referenced.

    The actress should be Germania. In ancient times, when the tribes of Germania appeared as a single entity only from the pov of the Roman conquerors, they already depicted a "Germania" in the form of a woman as a numen and called her by the same name they assigned to the area. Since In the Middle Ages, with reference to the Germania Magna, she was considered the national personification of Germany in terms of the area in which the German language was spoken. In the 19th century, Germania served the democratic movement in Germany as a national-romantic symbol for the German nation-state it aspired to.

    For me a very important song: We'v got to keep the memory alive. Our generation (I am born in 71) is not responsible for what happened in the past, but we would be guilty, if it happened again. With the rising of fascists and right wing parties, it is even more important to have the past in mind in order to protect the present and future. (yes, left winged terror mustn't happen again as well, but we are far away from anything similar to RAF). This song is a great statement of Rammstein against fascism.

    with regard to the black lady and who she represents, i'd like to point towards the roman soldier's head she keeps by her side throughout german history(the entire video) and even kisses it from time to time. Remember, germans never saw themselves as "germans" until relatively recent times(16th,17th,18th century) it was the romans who gave the region and all the germanic tribes within the name "Germania". In my understanding of history, Rammstein portray Germany as a "product" of a roman head/marble head(Intelligence, Knowledge, culture, order) and a tribal black woman(wild, nature, chaos, strength) what creates tension through its history. Don't forget the red beam of history throughout the video which has its origin in the first scene. Of course everything should stay up to interpretation, but reading the lyrics would really make sense here. Greetings from Berlin.

    My interpretation of the role of 'Germania' in that video, which I may have overlooked in the series of posts, is this: Germania is a kind of putty or glue that developed around the time of the founding of the Reich in 1871 as a somehow religiously tinged salvation figure and culmination point, for all conceivably good, honorable and desirable attributes of a great past, a jointly experienced present and hopefully a glorious future. A self-discovery process one would probably say today. In view of the late statehood and its brief effect on the inner peace of the Germans, it should not be surprising that we are still in it - "so old and yet so young". Sometimes Germania is a seer in search of artifacts and signs, in Christianity she is denied and directly appropriated (the monk's lunch), sometimes a medieval ruler to protect, a woman of military rank (cold and disinterested), until finally she becomes an angel who gives birth to wolves or terriers - depending on the passage of time. A figure that altogether seems very double-faced and therefore must not only be loved. Who has learned to appreciate his country, loves his myths and therefore also Germania. That this love cannot be given to her is clearly stated by the singer on the place of execution - with the gallows rope around his neck and in the role of one of the victims of the worst misdeeds in which his ancestors and their fellow citizens got involved and acted out. Time can only alleviate the suffering that has taken place by understanding or not being able to understand it and make it undone. Rammstein may have had these variants in mind when in the video after the birth of the mangy dog only lap dogs were to be seen. In the end, Germania circles in the orbit of the earth; whether this is a good sign, the Rammsteiner leave open.

    Check the eyepatch at 8:22 and at 11:02. It shifts from right to left. Some less intelligent would say that it was a slight error in making the video. Knowing Rammstein's high level of perfection this was not a mistake. It's a subtle yet significant change, in regards to the story of the song.

  • @Sevness

    @Sevness

    2 жыл бұрын

    The point of the eyepatch was very very literal, as she portrayed Germania, the metaphorical "Mother" and "Queen" of Germany, to show Germany as a whole, it was to show her turning a blind eye to the atrocities. Even as the man is hanged, she is looking away from it, not watching, pretending it isn't happening, and the switch may have been more literal, to show us she is actively ignoring it, the people of Germany are ignoring it, but all it would take is to turn her head to see it.

  • @SidneyKenson

    @SidneyKenson

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@Sevness It's even more literal than that in my opinion. Depending on the current government in each phase, specially in the time since 1949, Germany turned a blind eye more to right wing extremists or left wing extremists.

  • @Sevness

    @Sevness

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@SidneyKenson Yeah, there is also a lot of strange things that people don't account for. For example, the political system of Europe was mirrored what the US political system was. So when they called them right-wing, they effectively meant left-wing by American standards. As the age of the internet came to be, as countries all over started to merge and connect, the left vs right thing as a whole confused a lot of people because of that discrepancy. Now we don't even know where anyone stands anymore, because of that confusion. Fascism, for example, a lot of people claim it's right-wing, but by American standards, it's left-wing, because the Nazis were Socialists, it's in their name, and did a lot of the things that modern socialists call for, like taking from the rich and redistributing the money, taking over banks to make them more fair to the common person. But it was the Italians that were Fascist, and even then that term is not properly understood. The Italians were pseudo-communist, semi-socialist, the icon for Fascism is literally a bungle of sticks, either wrapped around a hand ax or a hand ax tied to a bundle of sticks. The symbolism is obvious, the sticks represent the normal people, the ax the government. The meaning is a standard thing, that one stick, alone is easy to break, three sticks together are harder to break than one, and 20 sticks together is stronger than three, and pushed a very socialist/communist ideal that everyone working together, under the government, to stand strong. The real problem is the focus on left or right, which we shouldn't do, because that changes area to area, even to this day. So instead, we should focus on the up and the down, because when you have a system that is authoritarian, wanting to be the authority, the one in charge and leading by force and making examples of others, you get Stalinist communist and the socialism we saw in Germany under Nazi rule. A more libertarian system, be it left or right, will be more free, peaceable, and less prone to corruption and abuse, harder to have one small group control the vast majority, which is the ultimate downfall of all the attempts at a system so far.

One wide one that represents the time line and many small ones that scan the statues and other legacies. After they bring Germania back to life and want to reconstruct the German people from it, they get a pack of loyal and obedient dogs.

    This was a very good reaction for someone, who did not understand german or read the translated lyrics. Of course you have missed many points, but that`s ok. This video is symbol laden and there is no detail without purpose. You will find many explanations in this comment section, i'm sure. There are several analysis videos on YT as well. Some thoughts from me regarding your discussion: The black lady is Germania. She is a kind of representation of Germany, but not exactly. She is often dressed in gold with red lipsticks and together with her skin color... The monks are part of the time period of Martin Luther. In this time the church did literally 'eaten the land'. The birth scene is often explaned with the nearly eradication of the Leonberger breed, which is surely right. But for me there is always the feeling of Germania gives birth to the 'dogs of war'.

    First of all great reaction, i love to see so many people really dig into this particular song and talk about it. I also think its one of the greatest german musik pieces including the video. It represent so good our conflicted feelings toward Germany as our home country. The black woman stands for Germania, as mentioned in the credits, a personification of the german area, she was given by the romans, if im right, to represent the multiple tribes under the german language, and was used later as personification of the wish to be one germania satnding together, instead of the many kingdoms. For the dogs is to say, that they are a well known german breed, i believe in kombination with hazard suits it is depiction for the problems in germany today. With Corona the political right gets new strength and there is the "Querdenker"-Movement, wich critisize the politic ofr its course, feeling supressed. That a german breed is choosen can be the visual representation of political right and Neo-Nazis getting a too strong pull and power within the country. In the starting scene with the astronauts there also was that coffin, so i also think it was just a jump from the first representation of germania to the future, giving the video a frame, for all the skipping in time.

    German is my first language - so as a native pls let me explain as concise as possible as many of the hidden symbols and meanings in this great song: In advance - please apologize the mistakes that I have certainly made - English is not my first language :-) Before I go through it just some general remarks: the black lady’s persona in the video is “Germania” and she represents Germany (the nation / the people) and in many scenes where she appears the colors black, red and gold (colors of the German flag) are dominant. The video as well as the lyrics are a critical review on Germany’s history. Main scenes of the video: The first scene with the roman soldiers refers to the battle of Teutoburg forest, the first time the German tribes untied under Arminius against the Romans and ambushed them on their march back to their winter camp + completely annihilated several legions - the romans would never return and fortify at the Rhine - this could be seen as the birth of the German identity. The red laser beams throughout the video I think are guiding thread (German expression “roter Faden”" translates to “red thread” and translates to guiding principle / guideline of a story) When Germania (black lady) in golden armor (black red gold as main colors of the scene pushes the standard into the ground she raises all the dead medieval knights - a reference to the strength of the German people who recovered time after time throughout history from catastrophes (especially, but not only) in the middle ages (crusades, hunnic invasion, plague, etc.) - the additional meaning i think is the fact that german people several times followed their countries call for War - even if they were already beaten up (e.g. after WWI going into WWII) Next scene (fistfight) is from the roaring twenties, the period between the two world wars where upper class society was decadent on the backs of ordinary people + entertainment industry was born. Next scene shows the Hindenburg disaster (famous German Airship which blew up in flames) during a time of growing industrialization 1930s. Next Scene is from the communist elite in eastern Germany who was indulging in party and Champaign while ordinary people were poor and the main idea of communism should be equality of the people. Then the scene in the middle ages - where the monks (representing the church) feast on Germania (the land) and suppresses the common folk (underneath the table) The scene in the prison again refers to the roaring twenties, as Germania is dressed in a prussian uniform suppressing the German people. Additionally money is thrown away by everybody, a reference to the big inflation in Germany after WWI. Then the rockets (Nazi German was working on the first warfare rockets called V1 and V2 (V standing for “Vergeltung” which translates to retaliation - fitting to the picture with the rockets, the lyrics are an alliteration on “über” a german pre-syllable meaning over. “Überheblich (overbearing / presumptuous), Überlegen (superior) Übernehmen (taking over), Übergeben (handing over), überraschen (surprise), Überfallen (ambush), Deutschland, Deutschland über allen (Germany, Germany above all). The Concentration camp prisoners have symbols sewn on their jackets for the groups the Nazis hunted and killed (yellow star for Jews, Pink triangle for Homosexuals, red symbol for political adversaries (communists). Germania is on the side of the Nazis and has an eyepatch (representing the blind eye that many Germans turned on the atrocities of the Nazi regime. The Scene where Till is dressed as a woman refers to the left wing terrorist group called “Rote Armee Fraktion” - a terrorist association in the 1970s responsible for several political assassinations and murders as well as a famous kidnapping of German Diplomats in Stockholm. Then there is the scene with the stake at which books are burned by the Nazis and people are burned by the church (inquisition). Later the monk (church) and the Nazi soldier hug (as the church did not go against the Nazis when they came to power and both organizations were responsible for a lot of intolerance and suffering in their times. The scene where Germania is dressed in white with a Halo I think refers to the positive, the strength of the German people who recovered time after time from several catastrophic disasters in their history. Later she gives birth to puppies (a rare breed of dogs (who represent the German people) which got almost extinct in both world wars (symbolized with the dogs wearing gas masks) but recovered after the wars. In these scenes the band members wear space suits - in my view a reference to the (hopefully) better future of the German people. In the very last scene of the outro you can once more see Germania with national colors (black, red gold) with black lipstick, red eyes and golden armor before a red/ black background holding an eagle, the heraldic symbol of Germany. Finally, please find below the lyrics of the song as the perfectly convey the message of the problematic relationship many Germans have to their homeland, wanting to be proud of it but not being able to due to it’s difficult history: - one remark to one of the more important lines of the lyrics: The line in this song "So jung und doch so alt" (So young and yet so old) refers to the fact that the German people with their identity have been around for thousands of years, however the actual state of Germany as a nation was only founded very late (1871) thorough the unification of several mini states (Prussia, Hessia, Saxonia, Bavaria, etc.)
