Got the Aorus Elite X570 in 2019 Sept after seeing his breakdown on AM4 boards and it has lived upto what he has said. Sure, the BIOS was finicky (back in 2019) but it's gotten alot better. Back then the initial plan was R7 2700X (it was around 99p more than a R5 3600 - needed the cores) --> 3900 X/T --> 5950X. Otherwise, would have gotten a cheap B450 board.

I got the X570 Aorus Master based on BZD recomendation in 2019 too. Gamers Nexus also used it as AM4 test board. And aside from some BIOS bugs it's been rock solid for me. It was expensive for the time at 450 but still almost half the price of the Xtreme.

Keen on the Asus video :) It baffles me how much money we have to spend now to get 3 features. Clear CMOS button, Flash button and a Q-code led. I find these videos so valuable for those features alone. Currently on B550 and what it looks like is I'm just going to have to wait to pick up a feature-rich mobo used in a year or so. When I look back at what I paid and what I got it's crazy. Prices in AUD: Bought a Maximus V Formula for like $300 on special Bought a Maximus 8 Hero used - Didn't spend a lot maybe $400 Bought a Crosshair 6 Hero that lasted me 3 generations and it was like $350 Bought an Aorus Master X570 but sold it and bought a cheap B550 Master for like $250 B650 Aorus Master $650And X670 Aorus master is $899

I changed all components except for the motherboard and the CPU. Other people on Gigabyte's Reddit are also having exactly the same issue with different CPUs such as 7700x. I will be returning the motherboard and will probably get something from ASUS.

I am similar in that I don't need a board that has 4 m.2 slots; 2 is enough for me. One for the boot drive and one for where you want/need a fast and relatively large drive. I only buy ATX mobos because I like not having things crowded together. I require a board have an optical out/TOSlink for audio. I like having lots of SATA ports(my current AM3+ board has 6 SATA and 2 eSATA), and I have a 4 port SATA card installed in an x1 slot. When I build an AM4 system I will buy an 8 port SATA card for it...

Just installed the MATX board on Christmas eve with a 7600x what an upgrade from my old Gigabyte 350ab wifi w/ 1700x. Some games really struggled at getting the 100% out of my rx6600. Even when they showed mostly 100% I know there was more to get out because I'm seeing some really big gains with the new setup. Possibly Pcie 4.0 support helping too. Used liquid metal conductonaut to paste and in long cinebench runs see around 92-93c with help of a cheap 280mm AIO. Boy these new procs run hot. It boosts frequently to 5.5ghz though and maintained 5.2ghz all core during the cinebench runs. Board is rev 1.1 but came with v1 bios and could not use my two ram sticks. Had to use one to post. Upgraded bios to 3c and two 16Gb ram sticks work and they run full speed with the xmp profile. Overall I'm happy for the $200 I spent on the board and with all the functionality should be set for multiple future upgrades!

I got the B650 Elite AX + 7700x (from MC so the board total is $180 and free ram) in preparation for a 79xx3D chip and it's surprisingly a really good board. Other than the weak audio chipset, haven't had any hard instabilities. The heatsinks are pretty overkill though, any of the vrms barely reach 50c at full load lol. I think if you don't have an audio interface of any sort, the b650 msi tomahawk is your best bet with its alc4080 chipset (my mc didn't have it at that time and I wanted to try out other brands)

FYI there is such a thing as PCI-E 4.0 10GbE AICs, which only need a single lane for full bandwidth. The OWC OWCPCIE10GB is the only one I can find, but it not horribly expensive. This means that boards with PCI-E 4.0 x1 slots are actually useful.

The reason there's so many M.2 slots is because if there were PCIe slots there they would get covered up by your 4 slot 4090. Even a regular 2 slot card you want to leave room for the fans to breathe. I agree they don't need to be PCIe 5.0, though. Just do PCIe 3.0 for the M.2's for all it matters.

I bought the X670E Aorus Master specifically for the PCIe layout. I don't like x8/x8 layouts. To me the only use for that seems to be multiple GPUs, which is a pretty rare setup these days. With the master I can maintain x16 for the gpu, and have 2 m.2 directly to the cpu (one for os, one for games), and still have the remaining 2 PCIe slots usable. Still sticking with sata ssds seems insane to me, the performance and system responsiveness difference is very noticeable. My only real complaint is the 2.5gb lan, but I can get a separate card when I actually upgrade my network to 10gb. I also don't agree to saying you can't put a 10gb nic in a 3.0x1 slot. It wouldn't do a full 10gb but it would do 8gb, which I would say is close enough for most people.

@6.38 Not exactly convenient - Yes I would agree 100% under the first metal plate are two of the mounting screw holes for the motherboard - a trap for young players you put the motherboard in the chassis first but there is another gotcha - make sure you have sufficient room to plug in your two 8 pin EPS connectors at the top of the board - I recommend 8 to 2 x 4 extensions to save your knuckles. One good feature of the board is that it has a microphone to listen to the sound of your fans and register a DB Level so you can make things nice and quiet. It's downfall however is the integrated software that goes with it which is best described as buggy but also is not segmented so overclocking seems to be part of fan control.

You should really give M.2 NVMe SSDs a chance, they're actually pretty awesome. Nothing looks nothing is faster, nothing looks cleaner, because it doesn't require cable management or ugly up your case with expansion cards that might make it more difficult to install some of these new GPUs that are just massive. There are so many PCIe lanes that it makes no sense to waste them on something stupid like an ugly expansion card for M.2 drives, when you can just have M.2 drives installed on the board directly.

I have always made it a point to keep my storage down on my gaming rig. One two terrabyte stick is enough for me to keep everything plus two or three games loaded and still not go over 60% total capacity. If I can get a good deal on a 4TB stick, I might consider it.

At the same time, not every workload requires that bandwidth, SATA drives can be cheaper for higher capacity models, cable management is often a non-issue since all cables are routed at the back regardless, and some people like having expansion cards in their PCs also. You may not, and that's fine. But other people don't mind it. Whether or not a PC is "cleaner" is subjective anyways. The flexibility of installing three GPUs, super-fast networking, or other add-in cards, are all lost when you have 4 m.2 slots for a system and a user that doesn't need it. Having to cool the GPU and not block it's cooler, that's also solvable by having an m.2 expansion card (with its "clean" shroud, blower fan, and no external power connectors mind you) above the GPU rather than below.

I understand why all the board manufacturers plaster their boards with NVMe slots, but so far pretty disappointing that there isn't at least one option for a workstantion-y build that just gives you maximum pci-e slots. I'd be perfectly fine with a bunch of PCIe3 slots from the chipset, since almost nothing except GPUs and NVMEs really need faster lanes, but just please give me one option that doesn't require me to frankenstein together a mess of riser cables and M.2->PCIe converters just to slot in something other than storage.

The VRM might be overkill for Am5, but you have to think these boards have to be designed to last multiple generations and power any future cpus. What if amd bring out an Am5 32 core cpu in the future that can pull 500-800w? The VRM heatsink will be needed then.

This is what I was thinking, this is the first generation and they are massively overbuilding to future proof as much as possible. Not only CPU, but the rest of the board. The cat is out of the box.. and high end GPUs are going to be 2-3 card width and having pci slots covered is useless. Makes sense to use that space with m2 slots. Also, having them 5.0.. future proofing.

  • @M.R.B.

The reason why they bake the M.2 slots onto the board is probably due to the current trend of vertically mounting your GPU on a dedicated or converted vertical mount that more likely than not kills all possibility of using any of the other slots. :(

That m.2 vs pcie x16 caveat is an "issue" with just about every AM5 board, tho its less of a problem for AM5 than it is for Z790 because it at least has 4 more lanes for cpu. You'll find that even the X670E MSI Godlike and Crosshair IX extreme have similar caveats to it. This is really a reason why I would not hesitate to use a Threadripper should they finally make enthusiast versions again. Dont have to worry about what happens to your primary gpu slot if you use all the pcie-5 m.2 slots. I guess they dont see turning your gpu slot into x8 will have much of an impact for gamers at least, since even these new gen gpu wont be saturating it. plus they are still gen 4 gpu. but, for the prosumer that would have needed that gen5 gpu bandwith AND gen 5 m.2 slots, then they will need to get/stick with Threadripper.

Motherboards usually have no x16 electrical slots free and have tops 2 free x4 electrical. I guess you could also install only 2 m.2 ssd’s in an x16 ssd adapter in a motherboard that supports x8/x8, but those x16 ssd adapters are pretty long and will block some GPU airflow(if you can fit an expansion card beneath the GPU).
