Ramadan For New Muslims | Dr. Shabir Ally

How should a new #Muslim approach Ramadan, and in particular, fasting? Dr. Shabir Ally recommends that new Muslims try out fasting and see what they can endure. They can go a bit longer without eating each day until they can master the whole day. He cautions that they should take it easy and do as much as they are able. The Quranic principle is that God does not hold a person responsible beyond what they can bear. He advises new Muslims learn more about their faith in Ramadan as an act of devotion to #God.

Yes same. I came into it at the height of summer a few years ago and it was really hard! The first two years were intermittent. What worked for me in my third year was to fast according to the equivalent hours in Mecca. Doing that whole month that way helped me body adjust and I’ve been able to fast whole days ever since.

@@andyrharris same! I also came into it at the height of summer. Ramadan 2013 was when I was learning about Islam and 2014 was when I actually fasted the first time. Thats a good idea to follow mecca times.

I'm a revert and I struggled to fast at first as I suffer from migraines. A big game-changer is to wake up early to eat suhoor and to watch what types of food you eat at this time as some foods are better than others. Bananas, Avocado, Dates, Milk, Low Gi Bread, Eggs, and lots of water (3-4 tall glasses) this is what I eat and it really helps to get you through the day. Also, caffeine withdrawal can make fasting difficult so its best to wean off the caffeine before Ramadan.

Another excellent episode! I reverted in 2017 and my first Ramada was in 2018. I started preparing months ahead of Ramada, here is how I did it and can honestly say I never had any problem fasting since then. > Coffee: I drank 13 to 15 cups daily! I started cutting back slowly a few months before Ramadan until I got down to about 5 cups then switched to decaf. It was not easy and I did get some headaches but not as bad had I gone "cold turkey on day one of Ramadan. To this day I still use only decaf and about 5 cups daily. > Getting in Shape: like any other challenge you need to condition yourself. I started fasting on Mondays and a month or two before Ramadan I added a second day - Thursday. Of course I modeled it after the practice of the Prophet (pbuh). After Ramada I stop the Monday/Thursday for a month but then after a month I go back to Monday fasting as a regular practice. >Mindset: of course it is not a walk in the park but is easily managed. I observed that some Muslims overeat which swells the stomach and this makes fasting that much more difficult. I reduce my intake prior to Ramadan and manage the amount of food I take in; the Prophet (pbuh) advised that we should stop eating before we are full. It is like my step-son use to say "I can't eat any more but my desert compartment still has room". Make sure you leave one "compartment" unfilled! I have found that this approach has made Ramadan quite easy. Yes I get hungry but not so much. This year I only have coffee in the morning and that means one good meal a day in the evening. The side benefit is that it helps me manage my weight. I love food and was brought up in a home where you didn't leave food so you tended to overeat. I hope this helps someone, I realize it is late for this year hopefully it will help someone next year.

I have been a Muslim for 4 years and built up to fasting full days, it’s a process and the important thing I found was to embrace prayer during the month and reading Quaran along with helping people. The fasting can be made up at later days as is discussed here. Allah is not trying to bring hardship to you but the opposite.

@@chrislebronfranklin I think the important thing is your intention, not just to fast but intention to build consistent practices which you will then take forward everyday….there is little point fasting for month of Ramadan when your daily practice is non existent. I would focus on prayer, reflection and fast the days you can, if you miss some make then up and make that intention.

@@chrislebronfranklin as long as set the intention to do so. For hydration drink at least a 1.5 litre bottle of water for Suhoor it helps.

Very helpful. A small tip from Our Lady of Fatima about fasting is to start fasting with bread and water. One tried and tested is toasted bread and water. Whole day nothing else is eaten and the mind kept busy is at work. Time passes quickly.

Years back before discovering Islam I've already been practicing intermittent fasting as part of health loss diet so it's easy for me Mashallah ☺️ though water is a must during fasting according to health/medical guidelines. So double-checking if Quran actually specifies no water during fasting. Perhaps the ruling hasn't been updated to take account of scientific findings?
