Who is the Quran's Intended Audience? | Dr. Shabir Ally

Who is the Quran's intended audience? Is it Arabia at the time of the Prophet Muhammad? Is it all of humankind? Dr. Shabir Ally says it's both: there's an immediate, direct audience and people who come afterwards. Host Safiyyah Ally asks how we can tell if a particular verse is intended for us or if it applies to situations at the time of the Prophet Muhammad. Dr. Shabir stresses the need to understand content. He also explains why God didn't send down a new revelation that would be more clearly suited to our times.

If what is objectively moral constantly changes with the times, there is a contradiction in what it means to be objectively moral or immoral. If it's clear to you that some of the things in the Quran are not moral in a modern understanding of the world, you have a serious conflict to reconcile with your beliefs. Don't let someone telling you that you cannot question god absolve your personal responsibility to act morally. You know that, if the god you believe in exists, he holds you ultimately responsible for your own actions, but even if no gods exist, then you are responsible for yourself by default.

When I make comments, I assume the reader has a reasonable grasp of the conversation and the ability to make the most basic logical inferences. I suggest giving a comment a moment's thought before responding from here on out. It will save us both some time. Again, if you want specific examples of his understanding, you must ask him. The fact that we have different interpretations filtered through different cultural lenses highlights the problem of applying the verses literally to every century and scenario. Many examples i can give but too long to write. Many verses are very localised to the local 7th century arabs whilst many ppl in the 21st century use these verses literally like fools. But in certain verses the objective morality issue is relevant however this is a separate issue where ppl must define how they identify an objective moral vs subjective or cultrual one.

Quran was sent down in Arabic. However, that does not make it that God is bias towards Arab race - quite a number of Muslims seem to think that Arab and their culture are what Islam is. Quran even quoted (9v97) "Arabs of the desert" not in a positive tone, whichever Arab that would be. In 41v44 the Quran alluded that even if it is not in Arabic, ppl who do not believe will not believe, language is not the issue. For a believer, it is a book that guides 7v52. I mean if you really meet a guru, he cant really teach you wisdom directly, technically speaking. Not until you start thinking and adopt the right attitude. Some people are just that, they do not really have the right attitude and they are not really true with their ownselves. That is why in 13v11, Quran mentioned that God will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves It is true though that some verses may look cryptic, even Quran notified that some allegorical verses can only be interpreted by those with knowledge - 3v7. Quran also noted that it is a noble discourse, alluding it only for those who have purified (intention) can "touch" it - 56v79. Quran even noted that it is God who ultimately reveal the (full) explanation to a believer - 75v19

Im a 7th Day Adventist Christian. Heres a few line of reasonings to consider using in order to win over to the truth in Christ Jesus. 1. The character/prophets of the bible and the prophets in islam that are the same such as adam, eve, enoch, noah, moses, king david and so on. Because islam does not give us the full story of their life or tell us how they came to be ask our muslim friend can the lineage in the bible be trusted. 2. Secondly the common prophets/characters in islam often have a partial life story or none at all such as enoch. Then ask can the bible be trusted to let us know who enoch is or let us know who the other prophet is who name is only found else where beside the quran or the holy bible. The line of reasoning is to build confidence in the validity of the bible and not to dispute. 3. Because the life of moses is incomplete in the quran and does not explain about the tabernacle in the wilderness, the feast days, pass over or day of atonement. Ask if the bible can be trusted to understand what those things were about and what they stood for. If the bible is to be trusted to understand the prophets of the quran or to know who there parents are or to know their full life story. Does the validity of the bible have weight. This is just a few small examples using a line of reasoning to bring a believer in the quran to the attention of the accuracy and validity of the bible. The purpose and goal is to show the truth in love and not in vain disputing.

The Quran is intended for all people, for all time. In essence, it is the Alim, the REAL SCHOLARS , not the fake mullah or Peer who ought to be disseminating the knowledge from the Quran. By and large those people are not educated correctly. They are Madrasah taught. Hence instead of keeping Islam as Deen they alter it into a Mazhab. The Quran is the Book for the Islamic State Government. For those with knowledge, who can create and form and sustain a Government based upon the Quranic injunctions. The Quran was sent down as a Blessing and a Mercy for all mankind hence any Government that is formed, based on its rulings must likewise be Just and Merciful. I disagree strongly with the notion that we must know the context and history of a verse! I will give an example: Suppose a Ph.D student asks his Professor to work on deriving a new equation. This equation helps the world solve, real world issues. In the future was it necessary for us to know who asked whom? Or at which University or venue this all took place? No. What is important, is the result. The Quran itself also negates the notion of having to know the "WHEN" THE "WHERE " THE "HOW." Dr Ally touched on this concept from the Quran, it is known as IJTIHAD. The Quran is not stuck in 7th Century Arabia, by applying logic and having a COUNCIL OF INTELLECTUALS, such verses that may have been for those times can be updated to our times. But be careful, for what you wish for. Here is food for thought: A Madrasah taught Sheik decided to go and visit Dubai. He heard it was a wonderful City, very high tech. When he gets out of the airport he gets in a taxi. The driver says " Salam ya Sheik." He replies but quickly asks the driver to put out his cigarette as it is haram. He does so. A minute later the Sheik says to him why do you not have a beard, you are Muslim, aren't you? It is haram, not to keep a beard. Not a couple of minutes go by when the Sheik tells the driver to turn off the radio as singing is haram. At this point the taxi driver has had enough. He pulls over and tells the Sheik to kindly get out, despite not completing the journey. He tells the Sheik "I am fed up with all your nonsense, please go and find a Camel to take you on the rest of your journey, as this taxi is also haram for you!" So dear brothers and sisters just remember to utilise the knowledge of Alims and use the process of Itjihad. ( By the way, I agree smoking is bad for you, its a dirty habit. So with nice words and tune are good for the soul and mind, they are not haram, as the Quran has not made music haram). JZK

If Quran were from God, it would have provided context from the life of the prophet, just like the Bible does for Abraham, Moses, David, and Jesus. As it is, Quran written in 6th century, context written in 3 centuries later! Even the Quran acknowledges this. It recounts the NARRATIVES of the prophet as recorded in the Bible, not the SAYINGS. God's ultimate revelation for mankind has always been the Bible. True before the Quran. True after the Quran.

Dr. Ally claims the Quran is for all humankind. Was not the New Testament also for all humankind? The theme of the New Testament is that of God's love for mankind whom he made in his own image. The New Testament explains God's plan of reconciliation for mankind "For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive." 1 Corinthians 15:45. " For God so love the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life." John 3:16. Why would the Islamic god deceive millions of Jews and subsequent Christians, into believing Christ was crucified only to claim hundreds of years later that he only made it "appear" that he died??? Without being coerced, what appeal does the Quran have for a female audience?

The problem is that the Quran provides no context. This was extrapolated centuries later. The Quran was written at a time when Arabic was just an oral language, and Nabatean Aramaic was just starting to be used as a written language to represent it, as occurs when Christian missionaries try to invent a new written language for a people group they are trying to reach. As such, there was a mismatch between the oral and written language, and the written alphabet of Nabatean Aramaic did not adequately sound out the spoken Arabic language. Later, diacritical marks were added to make the distinction. However, by that time, people did not know what the original intent of the Quranic author was. This led to a proliferation of Arabic versions, called the qiraats. Kind of an interesting choice of language for God's eternal uncreated word for all time, no? All of this points to a date of writing earlier than 600, because diacritics were already commonly used, as attested by ancient Arabic non-quranic inscriptions. Of course, the Quran lagged behind because nobody knew what diacritics to use. The very early date for the Quran is supported by recent carbon dating. The most likely date for the Birmingham Quran manuscript is 605, which pre dates the supposed prophetic career of Muhammad. And it is no first draft, containing extra consonantal markings, verse separators, and the modern ordering of the surahs. Older manuscripts have been dated from Sanaa, but these have not been as well publicized. So we have no idea who actually penned the Quran and under what circumstances. We do know that the kingdom of Himyar worshipped ar Rahman as its chief deity who had many similarities to the Jewish God. We also know that the last king of Himyar attacked Christians in the 6th century and tried to rally the Arabs and Sassinids behind him, insisting that ar Rahman has no son.
