RAMADAN: Fasting With The Locals in Indonesia 🇮🇩

In this video, I try fasting like the locals during Ramadan. My friend Ibnu lives in a small Muslim community in Jember, East Java. This is my first full day here and I decided to give PUASA(fasting) a try, I mean, how hard can it be right? Well, as you'll see in the video, it can be pretty tough. We actually did quite a bit in this video though. From waking up at 2:55 am and eating breakfast, going to see the sunrise at 5:30, watching Ibnu roast his coffee, hanging out with Ibnu's mom, going to the lighthouse, revisiting the trash-filled beach and the polluted fish market, eventually being able to eat and drink again and having the best damn watermelon juice of my life, and then finishing it up with dinner and visiting some friends. It was a long day, but I survived...barely

    I did the full month of fasting in Ramadan when I was in The Sudan. No choice, as The Sudan has Sharia Law and there was no where to buy food during the day. I lied because I smoked and drank water during the day though. I hated that I had no choice but to go without food.

    33:55 feeling headache is normal when you are fasting. it is like detoxification process, you will feel headache too, because your body try to adapt. try maybe 3-5 days of fasting, you will feel the difference. and since you usually drinking coffee, the headache might be worse for the 1st day though. do it 30 days, and the autophagy phase will benefit you in the long term

    I think when it comes to fasting no amount of water would prepare you for what lies ahead, which is why Islam put great emphasis on Niyyah (intention). Setting your intention prior to every fasting period helps you to stay on track and will strengthen you to pull through as you already made the commitment. I remember me and my friends had to give each other a pep talk when were fasting in Florida’s heat during our trip at Disney World while virtually everybody there were eating ice cream and drinking cold drinks..lol.

    What you did was awesome!. some beginners in fasting they try to do half day first to train themselves and you did one full day right away which was incredible shot. As we are getting older I don't eat too much during early breakfast, I have moderate meals, gentle food with high protein and eggs and fruits then enough water but not too much since it will make you feel bloated, not a good sign. First day with headache is normal because your body is adjusting with the new system with no food and water, craving for what it used to have but the second day things esp our body is the smart thing you could ever imagine, they adjust and work well, our mind plays the big role as well to support our intention. When you break the fast start with warm waters and light meals to say hello to your stomach, so it could digest well after long day without anything at all. Hope this will be helpful and things are going well for you. Cheers

You don't need to eat as much as you can, all you need is the type of food that need more time to digest like vegetables, fruits or meat. You just like me, drink a lot of water before start fasting. Lol. But I usually just drank around 1 or 1.5L of water, no sweet drink. I'm glad you made it even though you had a headache.👍 I hope your video going viral and the government see that dirty beach and then do something.

    Hello nick, After eating do not get used to sleep or lie down because it can cause stomach acid / gerd. Give time after eating between 1.5 hours - 3 hours before going to bed or lying down. If forced after eating, you really want to sleep because you are sleepy and tired, you can immediately sleep upright in a chair. My strategy for fasting is to drink enough at least 1.5 - 2 liters, you can divide it after adzan maghrib, after adzan Isha, before going to bed, then continue when you wake up for sahur, after eating sahur and finally if there is an imsak ( imsak is sign of stopping eating or preparation before the call to prayer at dawn during Ramadan. The sign is usually a siren from the mosque speaker, an announcement of imsak through the mosque speaker or reading the Koran before dawn from mosque) Note: if there is no imsak in the area or country you live in because imsak is only available during Ramadan and not all countries and regions in these countries, including several regions in Indonesia, apply Imsak, you can google in the area what time it is dawn, and stop eating 5-10 minutes before the dawn hour. For food eat at sahur so that you can fast throughout the day, enough / few carbohydrates, multiply vegetables, protein and fruit with sufficient portions. Especially if there are dates, eating 1-3 dates after eating sahur is very helpful. During the day, try to keep your mind and body positive and busy, it will also help you to fast.

  • @nikovirtanen
    @nikovirtanen2 жыл бұрын

    My strategy is to firstly intend by heart that you want to do the fasting (it's important because your mind will coordinate with the body to endure the day without eating and drinking), and secondly eat carbohydrates and protein, and drink sufficiently, not too much though, with a feeling that you have had enough. A fruit after meal is also good. PS. Never eat instant noodle for sahur because your stomach will scream in the morning.

    My fav parts are 11:23 and 16:09!! Btw, there's this saying that the tastiest drink/meal is the first one we have when we break the fast. Do you agree? 😁 All in all, I believe the first time fasting was quite an experience for you. Too bad with the headache though. I drink coffee everyday as well and I always have my daily dose during sahur.

    Here's some Ancestor tips : eat and drink while sitting cross-legged on the floor or something flat because the stomach will separate the space for foods, drinks, and air... And do not ever eating and drinking while in standing position
