Rain Gutter POWER #4 - Charge a Smartphone With The RAIN!!!

Ғылым және технология

This is part 4 of my series on generating power from rain gutters. We're not just squirting water on a propeller, I show how to calculate the power available and harness an increasing percentage of it. In this video I actually store the power in a smartphone, something people argued could not be done!
A huge thanks to all of you viewers, but ESPECIALLY my Quint-essential patrons on Patreon. They could just sit back and watch for free but are stepping up and joining me on this journey. To join them, please visit:

I only do per-creation subscriptions and recommend setting a monthly limit in case I upload more than once in a month (which will be rare). This is so if I decide to take a month off, I don't keep taking your money just because another month as passed!
If instead you prefer a one-time donation option, here's a PayPal address you can use: BUILD2LRN@GMAIL.COM
Also looks like I missed a great opportunity to make the gutter valve MUCH simpler. Thanks to the comments I now know what a "bell siphon" is. Practical engineering has a fantastic video on it. A great example of when a plenty capable person (me) hasn't seen a far better way of doing something (bell siphon) and an opportunity for another great video!

    To see that "Charging screen" the smartphone has to partially boot, so the bootloader is engaged and a minimal firmware is loaded. This means the CPU is technically awake (at very low power). Aside from the protection circuitry the display controller will be awake, the top LED will be lit red (with associated circuitry) and so on.

  • @balthromaw6305

    @balthromaw6305

    You are correct, however Cell phone batteries have a BMS built into the connector leaving the Over charge, Over discharge, and over current protection to the battery, the phones protection circuitry awakens when a voltage is applied to the charge port. if the voltage exceeds 5.5V the phone is supposed to disconnect input by a mosfet... or if the voltage is below 4.5 the phone wont bother waking to acknowledge a suitable charge voltage. However each manufacturer... varies on the voltage limits... and in some cases limits are not implemented at all. Always maintain 4.9-5.1V typical to avoid damage to the phones internal circuitry cause even if you fry the charge port... that wont damage the battery as it will simply self regulate regardless what the phone does.

    The fact that your phone shows 12% doesn't mean anything really, it shows 12% of what you're allowed to consume and not damage the battery. Even at 0% charge your battery has over a volt of energy contained in it, that's what he was referring to. If you were vaping you'd know that at max your 18650 can store from 3.7 to 4.2 volts max and the lowest possible voltage on a battery is between 1.7-2.0 volts where manufacturers basically cut off any possible drain from the battery in order to preserve it. There's a negative factor to the battery longevity if you OVERcharge your and the same, if not worse - if you by accident overly discharge your battery. Most of the time you won't even be able to charge up on overly discharged battery at all. In best case - you'll be left with 50-70% of charge capacity the battery ever could achieve and it would quickly deteriorate from that point.

    I think you originally made a miscalculation when sizing your roof, instead of calculating the total surface area you should calculate surface area NORMAL to the ground otherwise you are relying on 45deg rain (or whatever the pitch of the roof is) to get the potential energy you are expecting. This might also mean your generator is oversized

    🇦🇺hi mate: I thought 💭 it might be a good idea: instead if letting your gutters fill up with water 💧 witch can run back into your house if something goes wrong. Have a down pipe from your gutter run into a water tight Box with a slant on the top with some mesh on it so only the water gets throw and level will just roll off . Also you can put an Overflow hole in it: in case something goes wrong. Then you can set it up with your Flout and bits and pieces in the box and not have to worry about it doing any damage to your home 🏠 The only time you will have to check it: is if the water is coming out of the Overflow hole. I like the way you you think 🤔 mate keep them coming.

    Problem with this - assuming the water is collecting at a lower point than the roof, you are loosing potential energy with your buffer....

  • @adamholden4050

    @adamholden4050

    Dale Atkin You can also cut a section out for the gutter a couple of inches smaller than the box: then cut the sides out of the box at the top: so the gutter can go into the side of the box. Then you can screw the box directly to the fascia. I would still make sure you have a overflow hole on it just in case. The box is call a (Rainhead) if you want to look the up. At least that what we call them in Australia 🇦🇺. The others good thing about having a Rainhead: is you want loose water down the other pipes on your house when it fills up. Hopefully this is helpful.✌️out brother

    in terms of price, they are only worth it in the long future. Pwm/ buck converter are better in this aplications because they are fairly inexpensive and he is producing less than 1W in his sistem so maybe he will get 25% more efficiency but that is crazy small gains of power. Spending so much money in a mppt charge controller to obtain 0.25 W more power is worthless. If he intends to somehow upgrade the setup he could give it a though but at this stage there is no point other than learning/ experiencing with it
