Railway 8mm cine from the 1960's & 1970's Featuring - Bristol & Swansea.

Delving into my archives,I came across the footage featured in this upload. In the first part we see an open day at Bristol Bath Road Open Day in 1968, followed by a run from Cardiff to Swansea behind a Western Class Diesel. Regrettably this was silent cine, but some long gone features may be of interest.

    I was a Shunter at Stoke Gifford “ Bristol Parkway now” and transferred to Pz, then years later back to Bath Rd as a Guard, this video brings back so many memories, especially the Shunter standing on the step of the 08 Pilot. Using my Wife’s computer.

    Hi Bob thanks for filming this and making it available to us all to see 50 years on. I was at the open day,with a chap called Tim Gould from Sherborne, unfortunately no longer with us. As school boys we had a great time and decided it was the career for us. Tim went into the box at sherborne while I joined the footplate at ooc in 1972. Still driving now at Westbury. I think of those days every time I look at where Bath Road depot use to be. It was a big depot with really good facilities provided by BR. Unlike the box room that is provided to day on platforms 5 and 7 at Bristol. The Western was a really good loco to work on but were being maintained on a thin budget in their final days hence the smoking exhaust also if you took a lot of power very quickly you would beat the turbocharger which would always create smoke. The driver on the western arr at Cardiff was an ooc top link man Harry hmmm forgotten his second name he would have had relief at Cardiff with a cardiff or Swansea man going forward. But a great job. Thanks for jogging our collective memories. Dave.

    Love this video, especially at Neath, my hometown :) I wasn't born until the late 70s, so I have no memory of the Westerns on the SWML, but so great you've captured a bit of railway life from this part of the world in this era.

    Very ingenious way to upload from 8mm Bob , came out well , nice to look back and remember how it was , its near unbelievable how things have changed camera wise , I used to have a hand wind projector ....and hired old footage from the Co-op , as well as the 8mm cine camera my Dad passed on to me ...Dave

    Same as Pz JP, we had two Pilots working here, between Pz and Ponsadane, and on a Summer Saturday early turn, there were 23 up and down trains, each down train having to be tailed and released so the Loco could go for fuel. Including the early vans, Postal, News Papers, Sleepers, and Passenger trains. In the late 70s/80s we had an 08 from Landore Swansea, we had 08895, 08641, and 08644 over a 10 year period .

Do you have the original cine film for this? Or any other pieces of Bristol at that time? We're working with a filmmaker and editor who has a scanner. We'd be happy to arrange for your cine film to be scanned free of charge and sent back to you along with enhanced, new version if we'd be able to use some of the footage in our film? If you can let me know if this would be of interest, that'd be great. Thanks Kelly

The only other material I have is during a Visit to Bristol Zoo in the early 70's which is outside your time zone.The quality of 8mm Cine after 50 years is not the best, but I can do a search to see if I can locate it for you if you want....Regards...Bob

    Why were the diesel locos so scruffy and belching out black smoke? Diesels don't have to emit smoke. They were supposed to be the "clean" replacement for steam traction. The truth however, is that they were not. Diesels were cheaper to maintain and required less staff to run them. Cost cutting was the truth!

  • @robmasterman

    @robmasterman

    7 жыл бұрын

    This was during the period, when it was all run by British Rail, with financial issues a major problem. The first generation Diesels were built over sixty years ago, when technology wasn't as advanced as it is today, and clouds of fumes emanating from any loco at the time was common place. Steam should have been allowed to develop for many more years and Electric Traction brought in to replace it....Thanks for your comments...Bob

    When I look at a book of photos I don't expect the publisher to have felt it necessary to have the book play a tune to me as I flick through, I'm quite capable of looking at silent pictures in silence. Why then do uploaders feel that silent film footage has to be overdubbed with vacuous music? Great film, completely unnecessary music added.

    Thanks Andrew for your comments, it's all a matter of taste, and I fully appreciate your comments. Unfortunately, whilst produced, the music track cannot be deleted. If it concerns you that much, then may I suggest you turn off the volume.

    I felt the music was better than the sound of a projector Nicholas, if it bothers you that much, just turn the sound off....Bob

    Nothing wrong with some DECENT music, Bob, but your choice of supermarket music simply jars with the subject matter. What about something more classical?

    Hi Bob. I just use everyday pop stuff on my clips. I don't think anyone really cares about all that copyright stuff - only the Yanks who want to steal the world's creative freedom!
