Nice video Alan!! If that worker clearly couldnt see that that was a safety hazard then there is something wrong.

+Millenniumforce Time 2:30 *Looks as though Arm 3 is short maybe two (2) plates on the counterweight.* The brake shouldn't have to kick in as it did, and the motor's straining to raise the arm. I'm incredibly picky on counterweighting - the arm should be turnable by hand with the gears disconnected. Arm 3? Time to call in the transmission jacks - more weight, which means the existing plates have to be supported during removal and eventual reinstallation and torquing of the retaining nuts.

You said exactly what I was thinking. Not enough counterweights to raise and lower the gates properly. You right, the brakes shouldn’t have that much stress on them going down and the gates should raise with ease. Anyone who knows how to install those type of signals knows that you have to “balance” the gates. (Put enough counterweight on them to balance at a 30 degree angle or somewhere around that.)

They just need to replace the stupid gate because what I can see that's happening is that the motor is driving the gate down way too fast, so either the gate is too heavy for the motor or the motor's speed is set too high. Great video and I hope they finally did something with this crossing gate by now.

For that gate to hit a car, it means that car is driving around the other gates. So it deserves to be hit. Yes, the gate is coming down too fast. But it's not the first one to come down.

Looks like a counter weight imbalance. Adjust those and it should fine. If not then a gear box issue

My conclusion is that the gate mechanism should be replaced. During different parts of the video, not only was it falling too fast on all instances, but due to the adjustments, it was going up too slow (all the other gates practically beat it) Only towards the very end it seemed to go up fine.

Apparently the gates are working with in the proper limits. By the time the gates start down all the traffic should be stopped.

There is nothing wrong with the gate. The one on the other side of the road goes down way before that one does which means a car would clearly have time to have gotten across before it went down anyway. I have been across that track several times and never have seen an issue.

I'm sorry sir but you're wrong. It doesn't matter which gate goes down first, if you see another quad setup like this, you would see that 1 exit gate will be delayed but kept the normal speed as the other exit gate.

Do you think the gate is heavy?

There is an issue with the gates across from my house where it will go down with no train and sometimes it may stay down for a few hours and they replaced the box and nothing is happening >:(

Perhaps it's a "Union Crossing"? The RR Union requires certain gates stay broken to avoid staffing cuts if they were all working correct? Job security at it's finest?

not only does it go down Very Fast Alan it goes up so Slow! Drivers are gonna be waiting for the Gate a bit longer than the other Gates!

I SEE, there STILL are #NOPEDESTRIAN GATES ON SIDEWALK! The gates closest to the traffic direction of flow, should go down first, the second gate in the same direction is delayed to allow any car stopped on the tracks, time to escape, HOWEVER, I agree, the escape gate on the close (Far right side) is still going down too fast, might need to have counterbalance adjusted, or the gearing changed.

The power down contact may not be adjusted correctly

All they need are LED replacements and a slower gear ratio on that one gate

it does the Pierre to come down kind of quickly but it doesn't look dangerously so I mean the Bell goes off the lights Flash and then the gate comes on kind of fast but not Dangerously

It's called a Quad Crossing. A Quad Crossing is an RR Crossing that consists of 4 gates.

I'm a female rail fan upstate NY think that gate was fast? I have seen one go down faster than that ony time thought it would break off its box. Lucky it was 2am no cars coming just me wacth in the local job

I love how people who aren't maintainers talk out their ass about things they know nothing about. I only wish mine looked and worked that good. If it had been out of spec. the FRA would have caught it when he did his inspections.

Wait hold on, if the crossing malfunctioned consistently for three years, shouldn't CSX have replaced the rotten thing by now? Also, the batteries would need to have gone dead from the amount of false activations over that period of time.

Bad counter balance on the gate mechanism. On a grade crossing signal inspection and QC job, that would of been an automatic failure on any assessment of these signals. In that case, BNSF would replace the whole signal.
