Railfanning Fostoria's Iron Triangle Railpark (Drone Video)

The Iron Triangle Railpark, located in Fostoria, Ohio, is one of the best places to watch trains in the Midwest! The rail park sits inside a triangle formed by the intersection of two CSX lines and a Norfolk Southern line. From the park, railfans can see around 75 trains per day! The rail park is located just 30 miles east of Deshler and is on the same east-west CSX mainline. In addition to the normal CSX and Norfolk Southern train traffic, it is not uncommon to see foreign power at the rail park such as BNSF, Union Pacific, Kansas City Southern, and Canadian National.
The grand opening of the five-acre Iron Triangle Railpark was on November 15, 2013. There is a RailStream webcam which streams live trains 24 hours a day! Trains passing by the Virtual Railfan webcam in Deshler will also Fostoria if they’re on the east-west mainline.
This video was recorded on October 8, 2019 using a DJI Mavic Pro drone, and the audio was recorded at ground level using a GoPro HERO Session camera.

Yikes !! What a conglomeration of beautiful trackage !! I'm always in awe of how RR Cos. know how to route trains to go where they go / all the preparation involved; the signals, switches, orders, crew make up and changing, drops and pickups, loading /unloading, communications, MOW...Amazing !!

When I travel through Fostoria ,I always make it a point to stop at the Iron Triangle ! I love trains and been in love with them since I was very young . The railpark looks great ! It has been a couple of years since I have been there ,andbainplan on going there soon. I live in Chesterfield ,Mi. Brilliant - good to hear some additional audio overlayed as well. In 2017 I flew for 15 hours from New Zealand to Houston then to Kansas City then drove all the way to Fostoria just so I could tick this place off my bucket list. An absolute gem of a place to visit. Mr Patel the Hotel Manager also left me a personal note wishing me well in my railfanning and gave me some free DVDs. I was there when the first bogie for the caboose was being delivered. At the time I didn't know what it was for but now I see a gorgeous B&O bay window on display. Absolutely loved Fostoria and highly recommend all railfans to make the pilgrimage.

It’s been a few years since my last visit, but IIRC, I’ve been to Fostoria 5 or 6 times. Amazing place !!
Thank you David for giving me the chance to view the complexity Fostoria has to offer as a railroad network, many opportunities to view trains from all angles

Are there are no restriction for flying a drone over trains or private property in Ohio?
How often do you do drone footage at the iron triangle?
would it be possible to include short views of signals?

You're not the first person to ask about that! I definitely need to start adding brief shots of signals to my videos when possible. Thanks for the suggestion!

It would seem that Virtual Railfan sold their access and cams to someone else.

You didn't catch anyone talking about riding the freight trains did you?
A railroad worker was killed there a month or two back in the CSX yard there
It's sad to think that with all these lines going in every direction, there's no passenger service.

It's too bad Amtrak doesn't service the interior of Ohio. The Amtrak station in Fostoria is now just a CSX MOW building I believe. I'm not sure exactly when Amtrak stopped running trains through Fostoria.
