I only ever played this once and it was actually on one of the Cross Sound Ferries. Back then I was spellbound by how good the explosion effects were and think they’re still pretty good today

So this is what the flash game was inspired by.

I remember playing this on an arcade at the laundromat my mother always went to, its been 20+ years and it just comes up to my mind whenever I think back but I never knew what the game was called till I got help by a poster from my description of it. The OST still slaps to this day

I almost shed a tear watching this thank you so much for posting this! This game became a major problem for me back in the nineties as I would take every opportunity to find my mother's purse and take all the quarters out and if I saw cash later on I started taking that too. They started catching on and as soon as I would disappear from the house at night on a school night the 2nd I put in the quarter at 7:11 at the end of the block I would get a hand on my shoulder and at that point I knew I was screwed so they would wait mainly my father until I finish the game and get all the way back in the house to catch an ass whooping One time I felt the hand on my shoulder and after the game was over he actually bought me a slurpee and went home and didn't beat the living s*** out of me for the first time I never got past the first stage I think just one I did . One time some random dude just started feeding me quarters and I just couldn't get past the first stage the stupid tank. Looking at you go so far into the game I mean obviously this is an arcade machine in your house where you don't have to feed endless quarters. I didn't know the weapon never changes gets super boring but for the time it was absolutely incredible and like crack for kids I mean how many kids got their ass beat for stealing so much money !! Playing this with quarters you're doomed to fail I mean just look how much enemy fire is coming it's just endless Once again hats off to you for posting this vital piece of History

I use to play this on my local pizza place with my friend every time we get out of school!!!

It reminds me a lot of the Apache and Comanche guerrillas of the 19th century, even today Winchester rifles are still great rifles. "True warriors don't even fear their own death".

Watching you go through this game in the later stages I mean God knows you could probably burn through over $200 on this game back in the day. Did anybody actually beat this game in the arcade or at some store wtf?

Looks very similar to Demonstar. I guess this is where it got its inspiration.

This is the arcade version, which is playable on PC with MAME. I can't give you a download link for it, but you can find it if you search for "raiden2.zip".

True, but honestly, this is closest to the "authentic" gameplay you'd get in an arcade back in the day, with kids just plugging in quarter after quarter and spamming bombs like there's no tomorrow. :P There are videos out there that show some truly god-tier level skill (assuming they're not using tools), but they don't capture the frenetic feeling of desperately trying to avoid all those bullets when you're playing it yourself.
