RAH-66 Comanche: The F-35 of Helicopters

Ғылым және технология

The U.S. has long led the world in stealth technologies, and for a time, it looked as though America's love for all things low-observable would extend all the way into rotorcraft like the RAH-66 Comanche attack helicopter
The Boeing-Sikorsky RAH-66 Comanche is US Army's stealth armed reconnaissance and attack helicopter designed for the United States Army. Following decades of development, the RAH-66 program was canceled in 2004 before mass production began, by which point nearly US$7 billion had been spent on the program.

I had the privilege of having one of the test pilots as a customer where I worked back then. It was awesome seeing that amazing chopper flying overhead. If you're already $7bil in, why not go the extra mile to get the finished product? 🤓 Most of the system bugs could have been fixed with today's higher tech and I'm pretty sure the composite materials issues would also have been worked out with today's modern tech too 🤔 I can't help but think some senior officers were nervous that the Comanche would rival the Apache which was never the point of producing them at all

Worked on this slick's electronics (specifically the HIDSS which this video doesn't really touch on) at Kaiser Aerospace & Electronics in San Jose. You have to remember that when the spec was originally laid out, UCAVs were an absolute pipe dream. The original spec wasn't unreasonable. However, over time, it succumbed to creeping featurism. The business about making it capable of ferrying itself across the Atlantic is a perfect example, as it immediately caused the extant prototypes to be significantly overweight, and of course nobody wanted their pet project part of it to be sliced off to save weight. Similarly, the addition of the external stub wings fucked its stealth but goodness, didn't it need MORE ARMAMENT?! No, it was originally meant to be a stealth scout. It wasn't meant to be an attack helicopter so there was no point in arming it like one. Having said all of that, the RAH-66 prototypes ended up being fantastic flying technology testbeds for a variety of modern weapons and avionics systems which at the time were considered borderline science fiction. More and more Wunderwaffen concept technologies got piled onto it (the airframe's ability to isolate and route around damage, for example, was just patently ridiculous), raising the overall program cost, and then as the Army started to reduce the quantity it wanted to purchase the cost-per-unit soared up to simply outrageous numbers (Go figure, if you slash the quantity of units on order for a program by half, you've just doubled your development cost-per-unit). We learned a great deal from it which this documentary barely hints at (i.e., the stealthed Blackhawks and the ability to do targeting handoffs with missiles launched by other vehicles, but also the KA&E HIDSS system is the progenitor for most modern helmet-mounted HUDs including the Gen. III F-35 helmet). So if you look at it that way, the money wasn't really 'wasted.'

At the end of the day, while needed for the cold war there was no useful operational criteria for the RAH-66 by the mid/late 90's. Worked at Westinghouse (now Northrup/Grumman) on the electronics. Unfortunately as electronics tech evolved in the 90's, there were some proposed upgrades for the RAH-66 but it woulda required ALOT of redesign for the avionics. Although a fantastic looking helicopter that performed very well, the need/requirements went away and it was ultimately a money/time pit.

I think it's because sci-fi and action movies became very popular during the '80s, in part due to the success of Star Wars (itself a sort of nostalgia operation, inspired by 1950s Saturday matinees and the idea of "WW2 in space"), in part because of the rearmament policies of the Reagan administration, which spurred a lot of "futuristic" R&D, like the F-117 and the SDI program. In the eyes of people currently their 30s-50s, this parallel between weapon development and sci-fi action/adventure means that "futuristic" is what was "futuristic" during the 1980s, before the budget cuts of the early 90s. At least, that's my opinion.

Those flat angles mean that it's not so much the F35 of helicopters, but the old F-117 of helicopters. Computers doing a lot of tweaking in flight to make it fly right and the like because not very aerodynamic, and still larger than needed radar signature sections. It was likely cancelled due to not offering enough where it mattered. The same types of tech are being advanced elsewhere, and maybe they'll return again to stealth helicopters when it's more viable.

Then congress canceled it, and started a new program, to develop a new helicopter to do the same job.

The tech that went in was groundbreaking...stronger powerplants and better rotors were probably next. But this bird was a beast in the making. Stealth isn't the solution...locking rotors and powerplants that double as jet power would will make this unbeatable. Imagine a Comanche that in flight can lock and consolidate rotors into a wing transfer power to jet propulsion and scream to battlefields with speed and maneuverability then retransotiom to rotor power to control battlefield operations. It's not impossible it just remains under deveoped.
